The below quote from the Globe story is funny. Just like 1 man succeeded the other as Prime Minister, so 1 ship named for that man will replace the ship that was named for the other.
A historical amusement. But also a silly game of politics.
Carrying on the "honour the former prime minister" theme: Why don't they build 2 new icebreakers, and name them "MacKenzie King" and "Arthur Meighan". Then they can have 1 in service, and one on the shelf, and have them change places 3 or 4 times over a 25 year period. back and forth and back and forth, etc.
Oh, and in 1 instance, the Governor-General himself can step-in and order the "MV MacKenzie King" back to docks, to be replaced by another ship..........
And while they're at it, build another icebreaker, name it the "R.B. Bennett", and then remove its engines and have it towed around the ocean by whales.
(and if you're not familiar with 20th century Prime Ministers of Canada, the above series of jokes is less effective.... ;D)

Flug that is funny. You should go on tour. But unfortunately that will go right over the head of many as I would bet that Arthur Meighan is a totally unfamiliar name to most. I actually didn't know the Dief will replace the Louis. I have seen the Louis in Quebec City either getting provisions or a refit. It wasn't docked at the usual Coast Guard facility but across the marina by the grain silos where the images were projected this summer for the anniversary of Quebec, Canada, or the French nation all depending on your political viewpoint .

Continuing the trend:
When the west coast's "Wilfred Laurier" ship is replaced, the replacement should be named "MV Robert Borden", but the ship would likely cost more than a $100 bill........

Is the ship going to fly the Red Ensign flag instead of the Maple Leaf? ;D

Yes, and as she (the John G. Diefenbaker) ages she will develop quite a persistent shaking problem.
Should the ferderal Liberals win the soon to be announced election, will they rename her the Lester B Pearson? or perhaps the Fuddle Duddle to hounour a more recent Liberal Prime Minister?

The new ice breaker already has a new name. The Diefenbreaker. Didn't take long for this one to take a hold.
