Greetings all,
talking with some members today, we were discussing how this Forum should have an Annual Awards event. We should present awards as a hybrid created from the Academy Awards and the NHL Awards.
Each awardee should receive a prestigious statue - a "Coastie" - which could be a BC Ferries model (the one with the noise that we all try out in the gift shops) on a stand.
Our Moderators, with input from the masses, could create a series of categories and create a poll for each. We, the messy masses, vote on them. Someone was joking around with a poll here last night and it sparked the idea.
The Coasties! WCFF Awards!
Category suggestions:
Best photo of a BCF Vessel (taken by member)
Most original rendering of BCF Vessel
Best New Member (Rookie of the Year?)
Best Moderator
Most compelling Thread
Ship of the Year!
The sky is the limit, but for the immediate future we could start with 6-8 categories. Keep it positive and fun. We could all gather here on one occasion - perhaps even the night of the Oscars - and have the awards announced. Our Staff could tally the results, hand envelopes to some accountant (no names mentioned) for safekeeping.
D'Elete in NJ had a brilliant idea, for that occasion we could all create badly rendered photos of ourselves, photoshopped onto Tuxedo or formal dress models, so we can attend this GALA soiree.
So there's the idea, thrown into the pit of the colleseum for you to devour! Any thoughts? Anyone interested?
In my humble opinion, this would be fun!!!

Oh, and I forgot, for the Awards I would like to send formal invitations to leaders and CEO's of large Ferry companies, just to invite them to attend. They could be presenters! I get giddy at 1:20am.

How about a category for the Most Fluff posted to the forum! Oh yeah, speaking of fluff, this is my 1000th post... P.S. I actually think this would be a fun "event" to hold!

We should probably avoid the name "Coasties", to avoid the impression that the awards are affiliated with ferry companies that use similar sounding name (either as name of a class of ships, or as name of the company itself). Otherwise, there's a perceived independence issue....
So what's a better name? here's some ideas (not saying they are good.....) - the binnacles - the golden-post awards - the spauldings - the golden cotter-pins - the West Coast Ferries Forum awards

I agree...I like the last one. I only used "Coastie" the way "Oscar" is used for the Academy Award....we can come up with some nickname....how about Nick? But let's come up with this for immediately after Christmas. We can have nominations, polls, a gala gathering, fun galore!!!! Ooooh, I can't wait! I really want to do those fancy gold-embossed invitations for bigwigs to serve as presenters!!!! Dear Premier Campbell...

Just to be clear & serious: You are joking about sending invitations to actual people such as Campbell & Hanh, right? I'm assuming that this is a parody (non)event, and that the only thing real is the categories and our participation in voting for the various categories, etc.......... Or am I misunderstanding the intent?

No, I don't think we'd really send any "real" invitations. Just a fun thought!

Though maybe we could carry the badly faked photo theme a little too far and paste their heads on along side ours... ;D The Ferries...now that's generic, non sponsor related. However, that does lose the implied participation of several local companies, and kinda throws off the irony of holding the award ceremony on the stairs of GM Place ;D Oh, and let's add the category of Best Modified Ferry Photo Done To Imply Some Devious Intent...I know we have a couple out there And, given this is the first year, anything event since the beginning of the forum should be included, and next year, we cn start limiting the choices to the previous year...unless it is a lifetime achievement award.

Well, I have watched the Academy Awards faithfully for nearly...um...yeah, a lot of years. I just love to throw popcorn at those pompous, gratuitious speeches of acceptance and even some of the presenters. I love the idea of a lifetime achievement award. And where should the ceremony be held? GM place is awesome! I had originally thought just an online gathering, I often notice here that the proboards list "largest number of members online" was 171 at some ungodly hour a year or two ago...could we challenge that record?
I am serious about wanting the Awards - photos, in particular - are things that members here could vote on. I just love the idea of putting on something of a Gala event. Besides, winning an Award here (no matter what we call it) allows us to re-release the post or photo to garnere even more glory. "Winner of 7 Forum Awards, including best thread" sure sounds a lot more exciting than "last edit: January 7, 2008 at 7:18pm by Member"
In a spirit of fun, this is something we should do! In a spirit of fear and trepediation, it makes me shudder what the evil twins out east will start doing with photos.
Take care all

Don't listen to him he is just angling to get his photo of the Cappy with horns in a category. Blatant self promotion .

Thanks for clarifying guys... Something was impairing my parody-sensor in my brain...something about my deep held belief that Marketing guys are out of control with plans to implement wild & crazy ideas. Accountants are supposed to mistrust Marketing guys, that's the rule, you know. ;D

I wouldn't be surprised if David Hahn actually reads this forum, so you can just post his invitation here, and he'd see it. Gordon Campbell avoids it on principle simply because of the word ferry, with which his cadre has nothing to do.
I think the best possible name we could give to a series of ferry awards would have to be the Dogwoods... it's not a notion associated with any current fleet, but it is definitely West Coast enough to embrace us all.

I'll make an award mockup which we can then photoshop different awards on to... it won't be done until the new years though.

How about the Queens...? or maybe the Experiences...Host Location: Queen of Nanaimo conference room - instead of the red carpet, we can lay out a green Dogwood carpet!
