How about a IRC BC Ferries chat channel. Then anyone can go in anytime and chat with others about ferries (or whatever).

How about a IRC BC Ferries chat channel. Then anyone can go in anytime and chat with others about ferries (or whatever). I sorta like that idea (mind you, I spent HOURS and DAYS on IRC 'back in the day'). I would see the only real question to be a matter of network ... I personally have always been partial to the undernet .... Any other thoughts on this, before we plant our flag somewhere?

Proboards does offer a free live chat add-on, but I'll only set it up if people are willing to use it.

I dunno about this IRC idea. I forum based system seems to work very well since we are not all on-line at the same time. I fear that if we set up an IRC chanel many discussions that occur will be missed out by people who drop by later on in the day.
That being said, I think durring major events like bomb-scares it could be very useful. But on the other side, our discussions and updates would not be recorded for others to see later in the day.

In my opinion, we don't need this IRC thing. For chat, lots of people on this forum already use MSN anyways.....and I don't think that the rest of the forum is missing much in the way of discussion. That's not a knock on the regular MSN'ers here, but a commentary that MSN-chat has "different content & style" from regular message-board items. Just by the nature of instant-chat, there is little room for reflective thought or comments. It's a free-for-all of who can type the fastest, and there's usually 3 people typing at once.
MSN does has it's place for those wanting that fast-paced conversation.....and the forum already tracks people's MSN-login info, through your user-profile (if you've decided to share that).
Unfortunately, I put this idea into the same category as many of Mac's (the originator of this thread): irrelevant to me, and not crucial to the overall well-being of this forum.

Web based live chat (to me) isn't that great since you can't control stuff as much. using Pure IRC, would allow anyone with an IRC client or a web browser (providing choice) a chance to use it. MSN chat for me doesn't work that well, you have to be invited and can't drop in etc. This would provider another "option" for people. Not everyone here likes to give out there IM username etc.

I can see both sides of this argument. I agree with Mac insofar as using "real" IRC rather than web-based for the same reason that was stated -- it is easier to connect from anywhere and does not require a particular site to be up or active. For an IRC network such as undernet, they do have a web-based client so that you do not need to download and install more software.
As for the point that chats will not be archived or preserved for others, well, that is what the forum is for. I am sure that if there is anything of any significance that is on the chat, that one of the members of that chat would take the time to drop it into the forum in the appropriate category.
As for not all of us being online at the same time, that's what makes IRC interesting too -- sometimes you get to talk to people purely based on who is there at that time. We could also post times that some of the main contributors to the forum would be online on IRC so that questions can be asked of them or they can participate in some debate.
I see the merits of both this forum and a complimentary IRC-type environment.
I am baffled as to why there is so much negative attitude towards it, although I understand that is quite different from a forum atmosphere.

Proboards does offer a free live chat add-on, but I'll only set it up if people are willing to use it. Would you be willing to set this up on a trial basis so that those of us that are not familiar with it can try it out and see how it compares to traditional IRC? I for one am not familiar with the proboards version, but I am very familiar with IRC in various platforms (mIRC, webchat, etc). I'd be willing to give things a spin one way or the other and see how things go. My hours and posting style are funky enough that I run into most of you online, and even cross-post with Mr. Horn most of the time!

I'd be willing to set it up as a trial, but in order for it to be kept here, I'll have to see frequent use. I will run the chat trial until the end of September. Now it's up to me to figure out how the thing works.

Your right Hardy, I suppose most of my point are based on pure paranoia. I see no harm in at least testing the system out.

I would participate in the trial. I already chat on MSN with some of the forum members anyways.

I've had probs with MSN and other chats plus too many things across my desktop tend to make my machine unstable and I too am slightly paranoid about leaving apps open and running when I am not always in attendance at my screen. Luckily, I am up for almost anything ...

Nevertheless, I'm on IRC if you want to talk ferries in real time. I went onto irc.freenode.net and set up a channel called #ferrytalk, if anyone's interested.
