It's funny... the city of Richmond is 100% Full Serve gas. ...stupid city bylaws.. The whole State of Oregon has no self-serve gas. Every (two-year) session, a bill gets introduced in the legislature to change that situation, and every time, no matter which party is in the majority, it is decided that it is too dangerous for the untrained general public to be pumping their own gas.

I saw a person drive off from a gas station without returning the nozzle to the holder last winter. It broke away from the hose and clattered on the ground. No gas poured out as they had paid and the autopay feature had cut off the gas already But in the process the gas cap on the door was also knocked off from the holder on the door. So the gentleman was without his cap as well and it was snowing. He probably figured it out when enough snow melted into his tank.
These days in Toronto there are still a few full serve stations and a few more that are mostly self serve with one aisle full serve. The majority are self serve with pay at the pump.

self serve gas stations, atm's, self check outs at grocery stores are all taking away potential parttime jobs for teens and people who need part time jobs

I'm sorry, but the gas attendants and the government pretty much shot themselves in the foot when they instituted the recent legislation that requires you to pre-pay for your gas. I used to always pay inside, since I like to interact with people, or maybe buy a pack of gum. Since the new legislation has come into effect, I haven't paid inside yet. I don't like having to go inside, try to predict how much fuel the car is going to take (I usually know a ballpark, like about 70 litres, but I like to fill the tank, not just put some arbitrary amount in.), then go back inside when I'm done to get my card back.
All this new legislation is going to do is let the gas stations get away with having fewer staff, which means less help should some emergency arise. (remember we have the general public dealing with very flammable fuels here.) And letting them make even more of a profit.
I don't know about any of you, but I always pump my own fuel. I have had a few times that the guy pumping my gas isn't paying attention at all, and makes some stupid mistake. There have been multiple times where they haven't replaced the fuel cap, and left it on the pump (I don't have the holder thing on the fuel door), or when the pump cuts off at 30 litres, and they think their done (I have a truck, with a 74 litre tank. Anybody with half a brain knows that most trucks take a little more than 30 litres, especially when I usually say "fill 'er up" or something of the sort.). I have even had one try to put diesel in my truck before I stopped him.
I do think that something should be done about "gas and dash" situations, but inconveniencing the general public for something that is a problem with a tiny minority of people, and allowing the gas companies to make more profit, is not the way to handle it. Install better security cameras at the pumps. I don't care if somebody watches me put fuel in my vehicle. What about automatic license plate readers? If you leave without paying, it automatically calls the police to report the theft.
Sorry about the rant, but this has been bugging me since the law came into effect. I know this thread was created for a more humorous subject, but it seemed the most relevant place for this.

While I was writing the above post, I had another stupid thing that I saw somebody do at a gas pump come to mind.
Last summer, my parents and myself took the NorAd to Prince Rupert, and were driving around via highways 16 and 97. We were filling up in Terrace, when we saw a man on a Honda Shadow motorcycle that we recognized from the ferry also filling up.
The man was talking to his buddy, completely oblivious to the fact that his fuel tank was full, and he was still going full blast on the pump seemingly unaware that gas was overflowing from the filler neck, over the hot engine and exhaust, and onto the ground. It created a big puddle underneath his bike. How we didn't have a fire I still don't know. He was still wearing his helmet, so I had to yell at him as loud as I can (which is $%#@ loud, due to my cadet drill voice) to make him hear me and realize the situation.
So, I can appreciate the argument that the general public is too stupid to be pumping their own fuel. I should also add that this was a small gas station, that had one person on staff who was busy cleaning the bathrooms or something at the time.
