At Christmas time I received a remote control tugboat and I was wondering where I could use such a thing? I think RC boats have been discussed on this forum a long time ago, so I'm hoping there may be some of you out there that do have some. I haven't had a chance to test out my boat yet... just made sure the battery works;) I was wondering if there are any tips or bits of advice out there on how to use an RC boat and where to use one. Are there ponds or pools out there that are specially built for such things? I seem to recall walking by one in Victoria once, near Beacon Hill Park. But, what are some other places that are "safe" to use them? I'm a bit paranoid about getting it out into a lake and then losing power. Are there "places and times" where people with RC boats get together? I've noticed such events with RC airplanes at Burnaby Lake Park before. Are there "unwritten rules" about RC boating? Like not doing it where there are lots of birds or boat traffic? Is the ocean okay or will salt water wreck the boat? I'm just mainly interested in others' experiences and anything you could tell me.

John, I'd PM cadmonkey. He should be able to give you the low-down on your question.

Somewhere in Burnaby was a pond where many remote control boaters met. I remember going there as a kid. I am sure that is no help to you though. There was a reflecting pond at SFU that they also but I believe the university put a stop to it when engineering students started holding battles or something ;p.

I recall years ago people using the RC boats at a pond in Central Park in Burnaby near the pitch & putt just off of Imperial.
For years in the basement of the BC Building at the PNE there was a group of RC Boaters that had a pool setup and they were floating their boats. One of them was a scale model of a V-Class. I think it might have been the Victoria or Vancouver. I always think back to that and wonder what happened to it.

UVic also has a decent fountain sail your boat in, thou it's not massive and you won't find any other RC people there. The fountain is just outside of the library. Particularly on Sunday, you will find very few people at UVic.
Other potential spots I can think of also include Royal Roads University. Here you will find a variety of ponds to drive your boat in. Most of the ponds are quite a large and deep; including the pond in the Japanese gardens. Unfortunately, I think the Japanese gardens are often closed to the public during weekends in the summer as it is rented out for wedding receptions.
The most famous pond is of course those in Beacon hill park. Particularly the RC pond on Dallas road (I'm pretty sure that is where it is).
