Well, this is not as Earth shattering as the title makes it out to be, but it is a question that inquiring minds in the room are curious about.
A few weeks ago, WSF switched around a few boats on the fly after the Cathlamet incident. So, the ferries get to see the rest of the sound, but so do the crews. For example, one crew started their day in Port Townsend and presumably ended their day in Friday Harbor. Another started in Friday Harbor, and the E-State spent that night in Mukilteo or Fauntleroy or, well, I don't know offhand. And I'm sure a shift change happened in here somewhere. But potentially, how does all that work if some crew member ends up 50 miles plus a (closed for the night) ferry ride away from home. I presume perhaps that's just a hazard of the job.
So, a few questions: - Does the crew go with the route or with the ferry? Or some other scenario? - Does somebody's "home base" change on a days notice? - Even if the answer is as simple as renting a van to get them back or something like that, it still seems like this would be more of a scheduling nightmare than even where to assign the ships themselves.
Oh. it's likely planned out a lot better than I'm imagining. But curious minds want to know. Thanks.

All ferries here (except maybe for the HIYU and Mosquito-Class) have staterooms for the crew with bunks or single berths.

Crews belong to the route. Sometimes we end up a long way from home on an emergency boat move, but we usually load up our cars and drop them at the nearest terminal to our destination. For instance, one crew took the Evergreen up to Anacortes, and the interisland crew brought the Illahee in from Friday Harbor. The boats tie up in Anacortes, the crews switch, the interisland crew takes the Evergreen back to FH, and the move crew hauls the Illahee to Eagle Harbor. Relatively simple.
I can't diagram the boat shuffle from last week without a chalkboard, sorry. ;D

Thank you very much for the insight, Barnacle.
