Credit for this topic goes to oceaneer77 who mentioned submarines in the Northern Adventure thread. That got me thinking, is this feaseable? Apparently someone thinks so: digbyareanewsandviews.blogspot.com/2009/12/submarine-as-alternative-to-driving.htmlA student at Dalhousie University in Halifax is proposing a thesis that includes the idea of a hydrogen-powered submarine in the Bay of Fundy. I don't know a lot about ship design... I know a submarine could avoid heavy seas... but how about if it was just half a submarine: a submarine that stayed on the surface with most of its superstructure under water. I'm assuming that fuel efficiency would go down the toilet due to increased resistance (more water to move through), unless an alternative fuel source was available (ie. hydrogen). Interesting idea - maybe totally out to lunch?

Uhm, I think submarines are actually more efficient when totally submerged, I think that the surfaces tension of that water provides a considerable amount of resistance. Don't quote me on that though.
