I know that as the ship's Chief Electrical Officer, he would have to do work on the ship while it was in the dry dock, or just in a normal refit. However, with the structure of BC Ferries, with the many crews that one ferry has, I wouldn't be surprised if this is not the case. Am I correct by thinking not? A friend of mine was the Chief Electrical Officer on Queen of the North for many years. I know that during the ship's 2001 upgrade (done in Victoria), he was doing his shifts in Victoria for the refit. So we was on-site and hands-on during those refits.

Re: Ferry crews during refits
For the most part, there isn't really much in the way of BCF crews doing the work unless it's Deas workers. There may be a few Engineers there, but that's about it. Most of the actual work is contracted out though. However, when the ship is being prepped for service, then the regular crews start to return to help put things back together a few days before the deadline. Deckhands would be sent in to start doing all of the routine check-offs, such as Lifejacket counts, LSA check-offs, fire fighting equipment check off, etc.

Friday October 22nd, I have a day off school, so I might go out for a day of ship-spotting. Are there any ferries scheduled to be out at Burrard, or anywhere else doing anything interesting on that day?

I have no school on that day as well, so I'm planning a day out in Tsawwassen at Fred Gingell Park to do some ferry spotting. As for Burrard, the only ship I can possibly think of that might be there is the Northern Expedition. I could be wrong though, because she isn't showing up anywhere on Siitech.

I gather that the Cowichan is now gone for its annual refreshening? The Coquitlam is listed as the Route 2 Departure Bay based vessel for the next several weeks.
This refit timing is more or less the same as it has been for several years now, right?

According to the Service Notice, the Alberni is supposed to be back in service this coming day, Nov, 14th.
Well, I noticed her tonight looking all nice and snazzy with her clean paintjob and tied up in Berth 1 at Tsawwassen tonight.
RBI states she's not actually back in service until first thing Monday morning. I believe this will then allow for the New West to go in for a bit of a refit as well.

MV Kuper is moving in Newcastle Channel right-now. Maybe she's doing some trials, or maybe moving to Departure Bay or on to Chemainus. - she is supposed to be back in-service later this week.

According to the Travel Centre the Queen of New West and Coastal Celebration will be the number 1 ships on route 1 begining Jan 5th. Looks like both Spirit ships will be out of service! What is odd is Friday Jan 7th the SOVI is the number 2 out of Swartz but Friday the 14th and onwards the SOBC is the number 2 out of Swartz. But just looking at it again she will still be based out of Tsawwassen as there looks to be an 8pm from Swartz Bay and no 12pm from Swartz so it looks like a revised schedule!

The Cow was doing sea trials yesterday.
Would having The Q of NW as #1 out of Tsawwassen not be a significant drop in Vehicle capacity & even at this time of year cause delays.

When the Chilliwack goes for refit does this mean she is going to be refurbished or just a regular refit???

The Queen of Capilano, the first ship entering refit in 2011, will be going to refit either today or tomorrow. According to the BC Ferries website, the Capilano will skip the last round trip between HB and Bowen Island, and the Bowen Queen will take over from the 9:35pm sailing and on until February.

The Capilano and the Chilliwack are in the Esquimalt Graving dock. The Capilano went in first followed by the Chilliwack. One company has the contract to do the Capilano and another one has the contract to do the Chilliwack. Placement in the dock can be a sign of which boat would be there the longest.

Both the Chilliwack and Capilano are out of the drydock now, as the dock was needed for another vessel. The Chilliwack is still sitting by the drydock.

I'll be making a trip to Bowen sometime in the next week (yes, I know the exact day, and anyone who has me added on Facebook likely does to, if they read my status-updates...), so unless the Queen of Capilano returns to her normal route abnormally early, I'll be getting some photos from a ride on the Bowen Queen to post here. If anybody has any photo-requests, just reply to this post, or PM me.
