I like that one, EGFleet! It would be neat if they had a big greeting sign like that these days.

Since I can't find a Multiple Ferries thread, these will count as Swartz Bay.

Berths 4 & 5 at Swartz Bay will be replaced soon. from here: www.bcferries.com/business_opportunities/---------------- It will be interesting to see the 2 Route-5 ships using berths 2 & 3 during the project. ...and I wonder if they'll modify some schedules to get around the times during the day when there might be 4 vessels at Swartz Bay all at once.

Do the Route 5 vessels overnight at Swartz Bay? If so, wouldn't that be the same situation described above - 4 vessels needing overnight accommodations with only 3 berths available? Granted, we are heading into the low season, so I imagine that would only occur when 4 vessels are deployed on Route 1, and now that Thanksgiving is over, that doesn't happen until, what, Christmas season?

However, I'm not sure when the project will start or will finish. This could impact Swartz Bay in Spring & part of Summer 2011. The proposals deadline is near end of October. After the winning bid is decided and the contract is awarded, it would be November. And then work likely wouldn't start until December or January, after engineering and planning is done. Look at how long Tsawwassen's Berth #4 is taking.

swartz bay has been home base for Mayne Q. almost continually since she was built, and I worked some spare board shifts on her when she had her side loading ramps for saturna and montague hbr. in the sixties. mrdot.

So she was never based at Saturna in the early days? Route Five schedules showed her starting from Saturna, but I always wondered if she actually overnighted there, given the remoteness of the place, and the logistics of having crew live there.

The logical way to complete this work is in two phases. One berth at a time. It is not the most cost effective way to complete the work, but it will allow the terminal to keep its functionality up. Also keep in mind while brainstorming how things may work during construction that the SOVI will tie up in dock 3 when it is not the number one boat come later this year and in the early part of 2011. A good example of a busy time is around 3pm. How things could look: Skeena in berth 1 for a 3pm departure. CCel in berth 2 for a 3pm departure. SOVI tied up in berth 3. Mayne queen in berth 4 or 5 for her 2:50pm departure.

That's some good thinking, CFG BTW: What does 'CFG' stand for? I'm thinking maybe 'Canadian Forces', then the 'G' might stand for the first letter of the base name?

When I was on the Bowen Queen yesterday, and we were approaching berth-4 at Swartz, I asked a deckhand if he knew when the berth 4 & 5 work was supposed to start.
He said that it was supposed to start "pretty soon" because the work "needs to be done by next summer".

Great video and photos of Swartz Bay in action. The week after Coastal Renaissance entered service in March of 2008, I made a special trip to ride on the new vessel, and they did the same thing with the Stores at Departure Bay. It was interesting to watch.

Now that we have a dedicated thread for Swartz Bay, I have a few older photos that I would like to share: A new SOVI at Swartz Bay, Berth 2, as seen from SOBC in Berth 1 - Feb, 1995 The back of SOVI in Berth 2, one of the Seven Sisters in Berth 3 (not sure which one), and another vessel in Berth 4, which I cannot positively identify - it kind of looks like it could be Tachek or Quadra Queen II from the bridge profile - Feb, 1995 SOVI sliding past Swartz Bay as she prepares to back into Berth 1 - Dec, 1996: Boarding SOVI at Berth 1 - Dec, 1996

The T-Class ferry there is, as you said, either the Tachek or the Tenaka.

It can be identified by the height of the red stripe above the upper car deck at the bow. If it was the Saanich, it would have a white gap below it. The unidentified minor vessel is the Tachek. The ships are actually in Berth 4 and 5, respectively.

When I was looking, I looked in the windows of the forward lounge and saw there were no valances visible. That means it's the Esquimalt. I didn't know of the red line. Thanks for that one, Scott.

The Swartz Bay berth 4&5 project is already delayed, even before it starts. - the deadline for proposals has been extended from original Oct.21st date, to Nov. 4th and now to Nov.10th.
Not that big of a deal, but they were wanting it done before the summer starts. A 20 day delay makes the timeline just a bit tougher.
