The HIYU is in semi reserve status. She has only partial engineering crew, but still could be brought out within a say. she is scheduled for Dry-Dock in January or February, shipyard slot available. It is likely it will remain with the WSF until the Chimicum comes on line. The current director is taking a more proactive status about keeping the routes operating.
As for the Lummi Island Ferry Committee, they are about the least consequential player in the mix. They are basically an extension of Whatcom County Public Works and like them have virtually no knowledge of Ferry operations. Further they do not seem to want to learn anything and spend most of their time twiddling and trying to discredit anyone who actually comes up with any solutions. They refuse to read reports, and seem to be promoting a gated community with the Ferry as a gate.

How dare they not want the Hiyu ? I know of a brand new cable-ferry that should be available. It's supposed to work well in harsh winter storms.

It's a fact that 75% or 3 out of 4, people will always side with the "Official" representative instead of those with a differing opinion.
When our group brought forth the report about getting the HIYU for Lummi Island, it was met by a buzz saw of disapproval by several of LIFAC members and the County.
These LIFAC members refused to read the report, the County didn't either, their remarks were from "what someone told them", or cherry picked, miss applied data they say supports their position.
Both LIFAC and the County Council Committees prohibit discussion by meeting "rules". The proponent gets to say their part, usually for three minutes. Then the Committee Members or the Officials get to talk, with no limits on time or frequency. What happens is the the "Official" talker says things that are not true, out of context, or generally derogatory to the proponents. The proponents do not get to have any kind of rebuttal or conversation with the "Official", they are barred by the "rules". The proponents sit there seething while the usually ignorant "Official" get to bloviate on the topic, say false or ignorant things that support their views. The result is that most people think the proponents are wrong, or at least misguided when they are not. Having done this the conversation or proposal is ended, proponents are discredited, in the "official" sense.
Because of this, I no longer regularly go to the LIFAC meetings. One of my friends who went this last time said, "the Chairman showed up late, the Committee hadn't read their homework and had no opinion on the working topics, the County Public Works guy told then about the repair of the Whatcom Chief, ---nothing was done, meeting ended early." In our opinion, LIFAC ought to be disbanded.
Our group is not done with our quest for the HIYU, we are just going another direction.

My first ever post, and I'm already getting the hammer... Not really, "earthworm". Welcome to our ferry loving family! Ship trackers show the HIYU at Kingston in the tie-up slip (moored there as an alternate standby storage location). WSF must be running out of slips at the Eagle Harbor Vessel Maintenance Center as more ferries seem to be heading there to its sick bay ward.

Several years ago before moving down sound, the Hiyu was given the task of providing direct service from Anacortes to Friday Harbor; as I recall, the trip took about an hour and a half. I have very fond memories of sitting in my vehicle on the jam-packed car deck, enjoying the view, as confused out-of-state visitors wandered about, looking for the non-existent galley. Hiyu is a functional, reliable, friendly little vessel, and was much loved by the folks in the San Juans. It's sad to see her usefulness outstripped by demand, and she'll long be remembered in the islands.

Since there is no thread for the YFB-87 aka Moko Holo Hele, the Hiyu's near sister, I thought I'd post it here.... the old Ford Island ferry is currently being prepared to be sunk as an artificial reef. Here's the Facebook page: www.facebook.com/wikolianareefproject/

We heard on Wednesday, we are already on it. Good for you, Lummi folks. Once she's gone, the YFB 87 is no longer an alternate option. Divers will be enjoying their time aboard that former Ford Island ferry with sea life. Just don't be supper for sharks, though (yikes!).
