Whoa! She needs quite a bit of work done according to the USCG Marine Information Exchange website... There is some info at cgmix.uscg.mil/PSIX/VesselSearch.aspxJust search for "Hiyu" and hit "Submit" under "Summary of Coast Guard Contacts. I would love the opportunity to have a trip on her. It will be interesting to find out what her future holds...

Let's see, sorting through the legalese...
One water light, two lifering buoys, a switch, recertify the liferafts... oh, there's the nasty one--replace the steel where the aprons land on the boat, I think. Unless they want the gunwales cut back, I'm not sure from the language on the site.

Has the mighty MV Hiyu actually left Eagle Harbor for this yard work? I think it was to be dome in Everett. If both MV Nisqually and MV Hiyu are both gone from Eagle Harbor, it must look rather empty over there?

Nah, not really... while the Hiyu and Nisqually are out at various commercial yards, the Tacoma, Quinault, Evergreen State, Cathlamet, Elwha, Chinook, Snohomish, and Kalama are still at Eagle Harbor--all but the Evergreen (and maybe the Quinault) are undergoing some sort of maintenance.

With a new problem at Port Townsend-Keystone, I am wondering why did WSF let the CG Certificates expire in MV Nisqually AND MV HIYU? If MV Hiyu had a current certificate she could journey to the islands to replace MV Illahee which then could go to Keystone to replace MV Klickitat. Didn't MV Hiyu spend most of January undergoing repairs at a commercial shipyard?

They were performing Subchapter-W safety mods. One cabin was severely modified to allow deck space for the rescue boat davit.

Pax capacity is governed by the number of PFDs aboard, but as a practical matter, yes the seating area was reduced. Not that it's a problem on the interisland run...

Does anyone know how long it will be before MV Hiyu and MV Nisqually will be ready for CG Certification? I think someone thought that MV Nisqually would be ready by about 1 May.

You saw the side where they'd parked the rescue boat davit, obviously. They took out almost 1/4 of the cabin for that.

I was outside, at work, assisting guests off of our cruise. That was the first time of the day when I was outside without a camera...if only it was an hour before. Anyways, as mentioned, the rescue boat sits where there were previously two (or three) windows of the passenger cabin.

Does anyone know why all of this work is being done on MV Hiyu if she is just going to sit in "mothballs" at Eagle Harbor? When was the last time she actually made a revenue run?

Once again, the work is being done because the USCG won't issue a COI if the boat isn't up to Subchapter-W standards. If a boat isn't certifiable for duty, you can't even hardly sell it for anything other than scrap, let alone operate it. WSF is keeping their options open. As it was, when the Klickitat's crack came to light, the Hiyu nearly went to the San Juans to sit in for the Illahee.

Looks like progress is being made on renewing the COI for MV Hiyu too. As of 27 March 2007, all but one of the problems have been corrected. Perhaps we can soon be saying "Welcome Back Hiyu!!"

Don't count on it. She's going to be the last one out of the Harbor in the event of a boat shortage. But she'll be a viable option, at any rate.

When was the last time Hiyu carried passengers? 1997? There is very little chance we'll ever get an opportunity to ride her in revenue service. WSF should just sell her.

Seriously, though, the Seattle-Vashon-Southworth run would be nice, and it would solve the whole Fauntleroy problem... hangup #1 is that Colman Dock is pretty much at carmax/paxmax already. Anyway, the only outstanding 835 that I could spot involved some steel renewal out at the tips. She's all but ready for operation, which is nice.

She was used on the Mukilteo-Clinton route sometime in the late 90's (not sure what the year was, but it was before the dock at Cliton was rebuilt). I know she has been used on the Steilacoom-Anderson Island route, but not sure if that was after she was withdrawn from service by WSF. Anyway, selling her right now would be a very bad idea. If for whatever reason the steel-electrics all get pulled from service, she will definitely be needed in the reserve fleet.

Just out of curiosity, does anybody know anything about the "sister" of the HIYU? I found a picture on a previous "HIYU" subject. It shows a vessel called "YFB 87". The search for that on Google confirms it is the boat. She is called the "Moko Holo Hele" (It means boat go back and forth".) It seems that she was replaced by a bridge, but I cannot find what happened to her after that.
