Looks like Kitsap has gotten a cabin refresh along with a new paint job. Thanks for posting the pics.

Anyone notice that her stacks were silver? I did I think they replaces the stack pipes or repainted them, the Chelan's were like that in 2000 after she got her upper ramps.

Anyone notice that her stacks were silver? They were just silver while waiting to be repainted. She now sails with black funnels as usual.

Well, okay. I was on the Kitsap today and got a couple pics...It was really busy and I haven't yet gotten time to get some pics at Edmonds. I will try again tomorrow. This shows the new glass partition and part of the galley...It was reconfigured when the boat was out of service over the summer.
Here we were at the Kingston dock with nearly double the amount of cars we could take

Nice to see the new galley. Glad I didn't have to take that run this past weekend... It will be nice when there are more people with experience operating the Olympics. It would have been really nice to just send Kitsap up to Mukilteo and pull Tokitae down for the day.

Glad I didn't have to take that run this past weekend... It will be nice when there are more people with experience operating the Olympics. It would have been really nice to just send Kitsap up to Mukilteo and pull Tokitae down for the day. That is exactly what I was wondering. It would have been so much better if we had that boat. We already have the crewing for a Jumbo Mk II and we would have been much better off. Although for me it was nice to be on the Kitsap to see the new painting and work. The paint job is very high quality. All of the bolts and fasteners and signage is new and looks great. The problem is that the second you open the door, you see the older faded and scratched paint inside. The seats still have slashes and holes and look just the same as before. The galley seating area is the same, but the galley service area was rebuilt. Other than that and the new non-skid steps on the stairways going to the cardeck, there were no cabin modifications...The shelter deck overhead windows were replaced with the same covers as the Kittitas has. After a super rainy day like today, I am confident to say that they do not leak like before. Here are a couple more pics that I got during the last two days. Today, sailing towards Kingston with a little wind. The Texas Deck was also completely repainted.
New signs on gates "Gate Must Remain Locked At All Times"...Funny, considering that there is a gate and lock provided. I broke the "rule" =)

What happened to the Kitsap? WSDOT said she will be out for about 2 weeks undergoing required repairs. Are there any ideas?

It was originally reported as "operational constraints" (which tends to mean "short on crew"). Actually, not anymore. That phrase is now being used regardless of the situation. In the Kitsap's case, it was a mechanical failure. Bremerton route borrowing Southworth ferry for a few weeksBREMERTON — The Bremerton ferry route returns to normal capacity Thursday morning at the expense of Southworth riders. Bremerton lost the 124-car Kitsap to propulsion problems early Wednesday. It'll be out about two weeks, in part because a dry dock where repairs can be made won't become available until next week, said Washington State Ferries spokeswoman Susan Harris-Huether.
The 124-car Cathlamet will move from the Southworth-Vashon Island-Fauntleroy route to Bremerton for the beginning of Thursday service. The 87-car Evergreen State, which was pulled from standby to help with Wednesday night's commute to Bremerton, will slide south to become the No. 2 boat on the Southworth route. It's slower and might fall behind during commute times, Harris-Huether said. It won't have galley service, vending or Wi-Fi onboard.

Based on the need for a drydock it sounds like the Kitsap's propulsion problem is a prop problem.
Either they hit something or the CP mechanism failed on its own.
Not Good.
The Evergreen State is sure having an active retirement.

It was originally reported as "operational constraints" (which tends to mean "short on crew"). "Operational constraints" is a phrase that came about as a replacement for all sorts of other phrases, including "crewing issue." However, WSF was letting the public believe that somebody hadn't bothered to show up instead of being more detailed... like lack of available credentialed personnel (if everyone is working or unavailable due to federal hours-of-service limitations, what can you do?), or an office mistake that led to a shift not getting filled. Instead, the crews were getting blamed for EVERYTHING, often times for something that wasn't their fault. The unions took them to task over this, and that is how the generic "operational constraints" phrase came about.

Sounds like a problem with the variable pitch propeller. She is still tied-up at Colman Dock with booms around the #1 end.

The Kitsap was my ride home from my day trip to the San Juans. I really enjoyed riding her on this unique assignment! But I can also say that I heard moans about it being the Kitsap while waiting in line to get on. Oh well, the Kitsap will be loved by Vashon Islanders when she (hopefully) goes there. Anyways, here she is coming into Friday Harbor with a seaplane photobombing the shot: An Issaquah class ferry just looks small in comparison to a Super when docked at Friday Harbor! Spider Kitsap: Here's the pilothouse before the pickleforks filled up. You could hear lots of people saying "Oh this one doesn't have an upper deck." The cabin, in need of a refresh: The # 2 end pickleforks: And to conclude this post, a view out the cardeck of some beautiful San Juan Islands scenery! (Mount Baker can be seen if you look closely.)

Thanks for that photo essay and commentary. You do great work, sir. - what ship did you take outbound from Anacortes?
