By popular demand - well actually I was reminded that I hadn't yet put these on my youtube site in conversation with Donella - I've uploaded 3 clips from when the Queen of Tsawwassen was filling in for the ' Burnaby to Powell River in 2007 of that classic announcement voice for 'welcome aboard', etc., that many of us can remember from years ago that accompanied any ferry ride. On the recent group circlepac trip more than a couple of us were disappointed to not hear this recording as it was surprisingly still being played as late as last year aboard the ' Tsawwassen on the route, but according to the bridge crew those days are officially gone and, as we heard, only live voice announcements were now given. As far as I can tell, you can no longer hear this voice anywhere in the fleet during regular service and I'm so glad that I recorded these three - 'welcome aboard' and safety notes at Comox as well as arrival message while nearing Powell River - enjoy. 'Welcome Aboard' Safety Notice 'Welcome to Powell River...'

I also have allot of ferry video from early 90's including two tours of the Bowen Queens Engine room, the old dock at Fullford, pre Swartz Bay upgrade, yellow carpet at Tsawwassen, off the top of my head. I also have Horseshoe Bay July 1992 with ferries arriving and leaving.

As the saying goes, talk is cheap; no offence intended. I'm looking forward to the day that I digitize Queen of the North news clips from the day after the sinking, including CBC's interview with our humble administrator John H., but I'll post about it after it happens, and it certainly won't happen at such a cost because fortunately VCR tape can much more easily be digitized.
That's some quality footage you have there, Trevor. We'd be eternally greatful, as with similar vintage footage, to see it on this great and growing young "net" and I very much look forward to eventually seeing it.

Mac Write,
For your videos to be HD quality is nice and all, but is it really necessary? Most of us couldn't give a hoot what the quality is like, as long as the content is recognizable. If you'd like it digitized, you could send me the tapes, and I'll just upload it to the computer via my 8mm camera. Though you'd have to wait, as the computer hookups I have for that are all with my parents at their home in Kelowna. But I'm trying to figure out ways of getting it to work on this new laptop I've been using, as I have more videos leading back to 2002 I'd like to share one of these days as well.

You can pick an inexpensive USB video capture device for under $40. As for the hard drive...$45 will net you a WD or Seagate 80Gb...$50 will get you 160Gb...

I meant Hard Drive and 8mm tape. I have over 40-45 tapes to digitize+ allot of VHS tapes. I want to do it right the first time so I am after a quality AV box.

The announcements on BC Ferries seem to have become less standardized throughout the fleet I have noticed, as different marketing spins are used and ammenities mentioned etc. On Wednesday for the first time I heard something new, "WElcome aboard the Queen of Cowichan .... blah blah blah ..... please do not leave baggage unattended at any time ......" I'll assume it's for theft purposes so I don't have to ridicule BC Ferries again for thinking they're important enough for a genuine terrorist attack. Also, if you haven't had a chance to see the CR's new safety video and announcement pay attention next time you're aboard (the announcement with no video also plays on the CI). Not only is it wayyyyy to long (like the Fast Cat one) with more detail than anyone will remember, it's also just generally poorly made much like the "Welcome aboard" announcement. Personally, my favourite part is when the individuals in the film are laughing while the "Abandon ship!" is called. I think BC Ferries is aiming for this: but they're not there yet. If you've noticed anything else changing with announcements, please, post it here

The durastically higher quality of their video, not that I expect BC Ferries to be at that level, but they aren't even within that League I feel. Looks like a handicam and a first year film student made it, not that effort was short. The concepts of many of the shots was sound.

These announcements are played over all the personal screens on aircraft. All the new aircraft have them, the bulk of the small airbus, and the majority of the 767's that are staying in the fleet. The A330 will be the last of the large planes to get the personal screens. The only aircraft that won't have them will be the CRJ's and Dash aircraft.
A long video like that is one thing when you have your own screen right in front of you but another when larger screens are playing for a whole area. The longer the presentation the greater the chance of people tuning out. There will be talking and people not paying attention with their kids distracting them, and people moving to get in line for the cafeteria etc. The audio will obviously have to stand alone for people who can't see a screen.
