Arctic Hooper, at sunset. She's doing her night crossing from Surrey to Duke Point: Later, the Queen of Alberni (my ship) passes the Arctic Hooper, and I get a dark close-up:

One of the Van Isle Barge pusher units, on her way to Nanaimo in the early morning hours. - as I could see by the dawn's early light, from the 5:15am BC Ferry Route-30 sailing: This is one of the hardest local "working freights" to photograph, because of their night-only schedule.

Flugel Horn, The Pusher tug you saw from the 5:15am ferry that you uploaded on Aug 26, is the Artic Taglu. I Confirm this because I passed this tug on my 5:15am trip on April 30, 2010 From the Coastal Inspiration. (Even More Confirmation from Ship to Ship Conversation between the Taglu and the Inspiration) Click on this link for my video with the Conversation: She departs Duke Point in the Late afternoon.

Thanks for that, Mr Horn- that's one terminal we haven't seen before. That's about as basic as they come. Some time I'll see if I can get on to their Surrey property to get some shots from this end.

I've been amassing a backlog of working freight photos recently on my flickr account and figured that it would be a good idea to finally start to upload to this thread before it piled-up further... Thanks very much for doing that. I especially appreciated the shots of the Arctic Hooper at Point Hope.

Thanks very much for doing that. I especially appreciated the shots of the Arctic Hooper at Point Hope. You're welcome, Mr. Horn. And thank you for those Arctic Taglu shots including a rare look at the true Duke Point terminal (whereas BC Ferries' nearby terminal is actually next to Jack Point), which actually helped motivate me to get my Arctic Hooper shots up here. The Arctic Hooper was only in for a quick 2 day refit and, according to a shipyard worker, was only in for new anodes and a fresh coat of paint but - agreeably - was looking quite good for not being out of the water (last time at Point Hope as well according to him, so they obviously did a good job) for about two and a half years.

May 7, 2011 photos of Arctic Taglu tug and Georgia Link barge, at the dock at Duke Point. - she's not in berth, just tied up along side the dock. Since I last looked at their website, Van Isle has added a third round trip between Duke Point and Surrey, five days a week, with a newly converted barge. Their biggest carrier, the Van Isle Link, is 504'x76'. Apparently, BC Ferries' drop trailer service hasn't hurt them as much as Seaspan.

A seemingly little-known fact (atleast I was surprised to learn and was kicking myself because I only bothered to find out when I saw exhaust coming from one of their barges themselves - especially considering that it's front and centre on their fleet list web page - near the bow) is that Van Isle utilizes ATBs that are powered by both the tug and the barge itself (See: www.vanislebarge.com/about.html ). I wonder what kind of efficiency this might add, if any.

After looking through the same file that I got my first flagship entry from for this month, as well as realizing that the Van Isle Barge Services' schedule now operates after dark, I decided to put together a few of those images to display here (For largest versions through flickr click 'ALL SIZES' and then the largest size given) Van Isle Barge Services ( See: www.vanislebarge.com )... Great shots of their Duke Point terminal. I went down there a couple years ago but I had a rent-a-cop usher me away, I was still on the road which I assumed was public property... If you're referring to Daholt Road, it is public property - the businesses off it are private property, but as long as you are on the road proper and have not passed a "hey stay the heck out" sign and are in a vehicle then fill thine boots, so to speak. The rent-a-cop was likely a bored retired army type turned commissionaire, with a complete lack of a clue what his job is, and is not. I run into this frequently when visiting SVI/SRY and Helijet, when a big old black pick'mup truck roars up with a commissionaire spraying spittle, telling me that I can't be there. I always smile and ask why, and then rebut their "there are signs" with another smile and a "really, show me..." and then show them my contract and suggest they leave while they are ahead. Drives them nuts...
