A now defunct railroad magazine, CTC Board had an annual event where readers from across North America would go out on one day - an ordinary day - and take photos of railroads. A collection of these photos would then be published to show the wide range of activities which took place on this ordinary day. I think this could be a great activity for our forum. For planning purposes I arbitrarily determined a day, July 30th (Thursday) that's far enough away you have the ability to make minor tweeks to your schedule if required. There would really be no theme, other than "West Coast Ferries," and I stole BC Ferries' old slogan as I believe it's quite fitting. Then at the end of the day, or over the next few days, we can share a few shots each of what we got. I would encourage participants to be somewhat out of the box too, so to speak, and include terminals, interiors, or even communities as they're effected by the ships - a genuine snapshot of the day. Hopefully this is something the membership would be interested in participating in.

This is a great idea Dane! I'll be getting on this for sure. I was planning a long day of ferry riding that day anyways, so your idea is perfect. I'm likely doing a 30-9-5-1-30 combo, or just a 30-1-1-30.

What sailings are you doing??? I usually have Thursdays off so I might be interested in a trip. I'd likely start with the 5:15am C'Inspiration from Duke Point, and then do the 8:00am Queen of New West from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay. After that, I'm not sure. I might hang around Swartz and take the C-Cell back to Tsawwassen, or might take the 11:00am Spirit from Swartz instead. - C-Cell 12:00 from Swartz would let me connect with the 3:15pm route 30 back to Duke. (the 11:00 am Spirit route-1 sailing wouldn't' get me to Tsawwassen until 12:35, too late for me to get the 12:45 route 30 home to Duke). So I think I'll go with the 12:00noon C-Cell sailing on Route-1 from Swartz, after enjoying a 2 hour break wandering around Swartz taking "day on the coast" pictures, including pictures of the 10:35 loading & departing Route 5 ship).I looked at sailings from Swartz on Route-5 for late morning, and there's a sailing that can take me to Mayne/Galiano, but then I'm stuck there until Route-9 comes in the evening to take me back to Tsawwassen. So I think I'll keep it a 30-1-1-30. 5:15 am, 8:00am, 12:00, 3:15. 12 hours of fun on the coast.

I'll have to look at my schedule, but maybe I can capture "Life On The Coast" south of the 49th. Seattle-Bainbridge and Edmonds-Kingston certainly have possibilities. The San Juans would be even better.

Didn't John Lennon write about the Princess Superior leaving ahead-of-schedule, in the song "Happiness is a warm gun"? No wait, that lyric was "....Mother Superior jumped the gun". Sorry for the confusion. Yes, I will take advantage of the opportunity to photograph that part of the day. Thanks for the heads-up.

The San Juans would be even better. I did just that recently. Round trip Edmonds-Kingston aboard the PUYALLUP on June 28, and round trip aboard the WENATCHEE on the Bainbridge run on June 29. Interesting to note: My PUYALLUP's 1715 westbound sailing was delayed twice by trains at Edmonds. The on-time Amtrak Empire Builder, which is usually a quick passage. After that, a southbound freight train, which consisted of all auto carriers, that took several minutes. Eastbound, we sailed south several miles to round the stern of a big northbound freighter.

No guarantees for me, but I'll certainly try to get out on a Ferry, or go and see one that day.

I take the Edmonds-Kingston ferry on a fairly regular basis, and yes, the trains do interrupt loading and unloading operations quite a bit of the time. That would be good to capture for such a cause as this one.

No guarantees for me, but I'll certainly try to get out on a Ferry, or go and see one that day. Waaaaah. With the nonscensical Civic Workers strike here, even the Toronto Island Ferries are sidelined. I suppose I can go look at the odd little Toronto City Centre Airport Ferry and pretend it is on the coast.

I may be up on Orcas that week. If so, I might try to walk on the inter-island ferry on this day and do a loop through the islands to capture some WSF moments in time. There's a 12:30 inter-island sailing that departs Orcas, leaves Shaw at 12:45, leaves Lopez at 13:15, and arrives in Friday Harbor at 13:55. I could either return back to Orcas on the 14:20, or stay in Friday Harbor a few hours and go back on the 17:35. And, the best part: traveling on the inter-island ferry is free for walk-ons.

I'm coaching that day, so I'll try and try and get out to Tsawwassen Beach for an evening sunset, and probably provide the last round of photos for the day.

OK-here's my latest plan. The way things are looking now, I will be heading up to Orcas on the 30th, so I should be able to get good ferry representation for the whole journey, which will include Kingston, Edmonds, Anacortes, Orcas, and all of the San Juans. If I go early in the morning, I can get to Orcas in time to still do the inter-island ferry in the afternoon as a walk-on.

Looking for inspiration? Here's something done with a transit bus: www.transitmuseumeducation.org/busday.html#- click on the "visit now" blue button on the right. ------------------- As for me, I'll be looking for unique pictures that are representative of the various times of the day that I'll be traveling. Starting with 5:00am at Duke Point.........that should be different. ;D

Starting with 5:00am at Duke Point.........that should be different. ;D Me, too. If I start with the 6:25am MV Puyallup sailing from Kingston to Edmonds, I'll be able to capture the morning commute. My next ferry would be the 10:05am MV Kaleetan sailing from Anacortes to Lopez, Shaw, and Orcas. Then, doing the inter-island ferry (MV Sealth) in the afternoon will round out the experience. It may be awhile before I will be able to upload photos since I will be on Orcas for the entire week following the 30th, and will not have much access to internet.

Tomorrow - please consider participating I'm getting out of bed before 4:00am, just to participate. I plan on taking 4 ferry trips. I want the fruits of my work to be 8 photos to post: 1 for each trip, and 1 from each pre-trip time at the terminals. I'll be looking for something other than the usual "here is the ferry" photos that I usually take. I've got a few ideas for photos, but I will be looking for inspiration "in the moment" for things to represent a typical day.

I'll try getting out to the viewpoint near the Westview Terminal tomorrow. It all depends on when I wake up though and how hot it is. So I can't promise I'll go.

Yeah, I'll 'try' tomorrow too... It'll be a stretch for me to make it out to Tsawwassen Beach between work and meeting a friend, but I'll try.

I'm going to attempt to make it out to Swartz Bay tomorrow, maybe take a round trip on the Skeena if I have time. I should have a few photos to post, regardless.
