Some scenes from the San Juan Islands this week: sunset from MV Yakima as we were departing Anacortes view of West Sound Bay and Mt. Turtleback on Orcas Island as seen from MV Klahowya en-route from Orcas to Friday Harbor The village of Westsound at the head of West Sound Bay - Orcas Island Pole Pass between Orcas Island and Crane Island - Deer Harbor Marina can be seen in the distance. It's hard to believe Kaleetan transited this narrow pass once upon a time. It doesn't look wide enough to accommodate a ferry, let-alone a Super, but it did. view of Deer Harbor and Mt. Turtleback from MV Klahowya in Wasp Passage nice forward view from MV Klahowya in Wasp Passage

Active Pass is a great place to enjoy the scenery when on a ferry trip.
Here's a real-time view of Active Pass from the bow of the classic Queen of Nanaimo ferry:

Hopefully the lovely sea-scape took the sting out of the sad visual decay on a day when this old Queen missed her appointment with her morning cosmetologist. Love the 'butt-container' frame, sans the container. This old Queen has obviously fallen out of favour with the BCF 'palace'.

I've never taken the first sailing from Gabriola Island to Nanaimo before, because I've never been there overnight.....until now. Here's the "perfect morning light" edition of my Quinsam "at the bow" trip timelapse. - follow my shadow, if that amuses you.

Outside on the Inside Passage ... View from the BC Ferry Northern Expedition in Princess Royal Channel south of Butedale, BC - 10 August 2017. It was a lovely day to be doing the Inside Passage. © WCK-JST by Jim Thorne, on Flickr Travelling up or down the Inside Passage on a sunny Summers' day offers a traveller an opportunity to 'feel' the quiet beauty of this remarkable place on our coast. At the forward end of the ship, one could hear the snapping of various flags as the breeze brushes past ones' face and pushes moist sea air into ones' inner sanctum. An aft viewing spot would offer one a quieter invasion of ones' senses, the low but steady engine throb escaping into the bright sea air, the breaking wash from the twin props found one counting the breaks in the rolling waves, our 'Maple Leaf' fluttering from its rigging on the stern post. The interruptive sound of a child's gleeful expression could break into ones' quiet solitude, at this moment, at this place, yet few would deny the child a warm smile. The child merely giving life to your thoughtful solitude that we are so fortunate to possess this beautiful place on our coast, our home.
