Scenes from my August 31, 2017 day on the water, where I did 4 trips (Duke Point to Tsawwassen, then to Swartz, then back to Tsawwassen, then back to Duke Point). What a fun and refreshing day. These scenes were a big part of my peaceful enjoyment of the day. The wave-cutting action on the Queen of Alberni, seen from the main vehicle deck. This is what I will miss experiencing after the car-deck regulations start to get enforced in October.

I've done a bit of video editing in recent days, so here's another scenes video: - this is the Route-30 sunrise seen from Coastal Inspiration near Tsawwassen. August 31, 2017
I believe that transportation can be beautiful. This is an example.

In December of 1978 I was on a ferry on what I will call route '10W'. While aboard that ferry I shot this rather fuzzy photo of another ferry on another route. Now this is the part where you readers get to take over ... I want you to tell us the name of that ferry (should be pretty easy), what route it was in operation on at the time of the photo, the name of the ferry 'company' operating that ferry, and a little more detail on the location. Lastly, name the ferry I was aboard from which I shot this photo ... One more thing, NO, this is NOT the Queen of Richmond ... Attachments:

OK I'm pretty sure I've got it. Not going to give it away just yet, but I will say that I'm sure the faithful Owl is keeping a good lookout for other members of Royalty.
Lets see if some of the newer forum members are able to piece it together.

MV Chinook operated by Black Ball. I will give you 2 points for your answer. That is two points out of a possible 10. I would give you more details but I want others to weigh in on this. I am also pretty sure that Nick is on the right track ... Anyone who is able to get all ten points could win a fabulous pink slightly used Queen of the North baseball cap ...

I'll give it a guess...
Sechelt Queen, Comox-Powell River, Ministry of Transportation and Highways, Strait of Georgia looking south towards Texada Island, viewed from the Queen of Prince Rupert.

Given the timing I think it has to be the Sechelt Queen (pictured) during her time with the MoT (Ministry of Transportation). Which of course means this must be the Comox/Powell River route. I'm not very familiar with the geography of the area, but my best guess would be that she is seen here off of Texada Island on her way to Comox. I'll leave the last bit to someone else, as I'm stumped as to which vessel you were aboard at the time.

The island in the background is Hornby Island, seen from the north (with Lambert Channel shown on the right side). This landmark, plus the zoom distortion, suggests that the ship is the Sechelt Queen, and she is sailing to Comox from Westview. My suggestion for the ferry & route that the photographer is on is the Queen of Prince Rupert on a "Tsawwassen to Prince Rupert" long cruise.

Me thinks forum members who have weighed in already have most of the pieces 'WettCoast' is looking for, so I will take a stab at the vessel he was on while taking this photo. He might have been on board the 'Queen of the North'?

He might have been on board the 'Queen of the North'? Not in 1978. ...and then again, if he was aboard that vessel, he would have been watching the seagulls romping about the decks whilst snuggly tied up at Deas Dock.

Mr Horn must have it right. He's got the vessel and the geography, and I don't think you'd get that view from the Cortes ferry even with a super zoom, so the only ferry it could be- since WettCoast says he was a passenger on a revenue sailing- would be the 'Rupert going to or from Tsawwassen.

So pretty much all the details have been nailed down and I can award the pink hat. The date was the 17th of December 1978. I was south bound on the QPR from Rupert to Tsawwassen via Kelsey Bay. I was sailing with the wise owl ... We were crossing (pretty much at right angles) to the route of the Comox - Powell River ferry which at that time was the Sechelt Queen (which was once called the Chinook). In those days that route was operated by the BC Ministry of Highways, not BC Ferries (hence the yellow funnel). My notes on the slide from which this is copied say that the SQ was Comox bound. Therefore the geography that we are looking at is probably as suggested by Mr Horn. The original for this photo is a Kodachrome slide. The ferry occupies just a small portion (about 10%) in the middle of the slide. The attachment is a major 'crop' from the slide. I did not own any 400 mm lens back in those days ... The hat by my reckoning should go to Kahn_C as he had almost everything nailed down first. if you want that hat Kahn_C , just let me know. Lastly, that island off in the distance, can we say with certainty that it is Hornby & not Texada?

I still think it's Texada with just a hint of Lasqueti in the distance. It's possible Mr. Horn is correct, but to me it looks more like the profile of Surprise Mt. behind Favada Pt. I'll have to pay more attention to the southward profiles next time I'm on the Orca. I won't deprive you of your hat.

It's Hornby... the lower flat land on the right hand (west) side is the 'bench', and you can see a bit of Denman on the far right.

For the background view, you can do Google "Streetview" from Lazo Road near Comox, and see that view of Hornby & Denman in the distance.
