With the Northern Expedition on her way to Deas as I type, I'm wondering what they are going to do about the lack of berth space. There are 3 retired ships sitting idle, taking up space right now. I see no reason why BCF couldn't rent moorage somewhere Well, with the Steel Electrics gone, Eagle Harbor has space now hmmm, and with WSF so hard up for revenue/funding these days... maybe they wouldn't object to BCF renting some space! All tongue-in-cheek of course.

All tongue-in-cheek of course. Interesting idea, to say the least. QUEEN OF SAANICH and QUEEN OF VANCOUVER, moored stern first in Eagle Harbor. Neat conversation pieces. Lots of gossip amongst the commuters on the Seattle-Bainbridge run. Just daydreaming...

Has anyone been past Deas to see the layout of the ships down there recently? Siitech shows the Norex anchored at the mouth of the basin, which confuses me...

heheh. I was about to post some Deas pics that I took this afternoon, but judging by what's above, there's no need ------------------------ [moderator edit: member now qualifies for gift of free edit to capitalize 2 letters and add 2 commas]

While driving through the tunnel this morning I noticed that one of the V-Class was no longer there. It looked like berth 2 was empty. Possibly for SOVI?

The Quinsam has arrived at Deas and looks to be berthed where the Queen of Saanich has been. There are currently a few tugs at Deas as well.

Just got back from my lunch break to find the Q of Van outside of Deas in the Fraser river moored by tugs. My guess is they're just holding her out there for a while so that they bring SOVI in since on Siitech, she's just by the mouth of the Fraser. I was able to get some ok pics with my Blackberry(I wish I had my camera instead). Here's one but I'll post the rest later. Thanks for the link to the thread ferrynutseattle. I missed it when I searching threads this morning.

what about berth 7 ?? Is it empty? Berths 6 & 7 are so short that you could only really fit two 'K' class vessels at most, or the currently rafted QPR and ' Chilliwack. Just got back from my lunch break to find the Q of Van outside of Deas in the Fraser river moored by tugs. My guess is they're just holding her out there for a while so that they bring SOVI in since on Siitech, she's just by the mouth of the Fraser. Thanks for the update, it looks like they're indeed going to move one of the vessels out of Deas. Some of the tugs that were sitting in the Fraser for much of the day are now in the Deas basin congregating around the ' Coquitlam according to siitech.com, and the SoVI has now passed the mouth of the Fraser but is completing a full circle (about a 180 degree turn so far) presumably before getting an assist up the river. According to siitech.com the ' Vancouver is moored and sitting idle at Berth 4.

With the tide now at its highest, it's the Queen of Coquitlam which is being shuffled at Deas, but seemingly being only moved a couple berths over. The NorEx is surely no longer at Deas. The 'Coquitlam seems to be being parked at Berth 3 with the 'Vancouver already having been shuffled over one space to Berth 4.

When reading Siitech, Long. 123 deg. 18.557 is mid channel at Sand Heads. (doing some charting heading north to Vancouver and just went by this area ;D) Amazing the things that can entertain you when you've got a cold, for me it's siitech.com when there's out of service movements like this today. It's been interesting watching the SoVI just hanging around the mouth of the Fraser for so long, especially considering how long it'll take the Sea Commander to tow her as far as Deas, I thought they'd have been worried about losing enough tidal height to bring her in this late with the peak having already been reached. Maybe the Westminster Hyack heading down river now will give her some added speed, if the SoVI is what the WH is being dispatched to assist. The Westminster Apache and Sea Warrior are also now heading down river, just about to pass Garden City Road.

As they're part of the same company, the Sea Commander and Sea Warrior, it seems that the latter might be now towing the Queen of Vancouver, based on the timing and her course towards Nanaimo according to siitech.com, and might be a good marker for where the ' Vancouver is currently by way of AIS tracking (halfway across the strait currently), presumably headed to the Assembly Wharf to join her sister the ' Saanich if this is the case (As of now, just after 8, the Sea Warrior is no longer visible on siitech.com). On a related note, the SoVI has now arrived at Berth 1. ...According to siitech.com the ' Vancouver is moored and sitting idle at Berth 4. I was going by an outdated nav status I now realize, as indicated by the darker colour of her position outline on siitech.com at the time.

I was looking at marinetraffic.com and the Nor Ex doesn't show as being there (Deas). would they have turned off her transponders because she is there for the Winter?

I was looking at marinetraffic.com and the Nor Ex doesn't show as being there (Deas). would they have turned off her transponders because she is there for the Winter? It seems that when sitting idle for long periods of time that they automatically shut down their AIS transponders and, depending on the crew, sometimes even do so just over night, but then again sometimes they leave it on such as with the Queen of Vancouver up until the day she left Deas recently. Another example like the NorEx right now is the Queen of Chilliwack, still part of the fleet yet one wouldn't know that she's at Deas going by AIS tracking. An example of ferries working their transponders like clockwork is the two original SeaBus vessels, they always turn off their AIS tracking transponders immediately upon going out of service.

The transponders aboard the Saanich and Vancouver went dark when they were disconnected from shore power. They are now rafted as "dead-ships" we won't be hearing from them anytime soon.

The Queen of Cowichan is currently being pushed into berth at Deas by the tugs. I believe they are putting her into Berth 3, if I know the Berth placements correctly.

I might be driving by Deas later today or tomorrow, so could I have a list of all the ships located there and at Fraser Shipyards right now so I know if it's worth it or not to drive down and get photos?
