I'm kind of doing this one for Neil, since he expressed an interest with Orcas Island. The following pictures are a bunch of historical photos of Orcas Island that my grandma on my mom's side gave me years ago. She had collected them and hung on to them. I think some of them may have come off of calenders, and others are postcards. In any case, I hope everyone enjoys this little glimpse into island life of yesteryear: Main Street in Eastsound, 1900 Westsound, 1903 - the lumber mill (center) was still in operation then Eastsound, 1906 Westsound, 1908 Eastsound, 1910 Robert Moran's mansion at Rosario, 1911 Westsound, 1912 Westsound, 1915 Eastsound, 1915 Westsound School, 1919 Westsound, 1925 Deer Harbor, 1927 - you can see the cannery docks in this photo Main Street in Eastsound, 1930's Westsound, 1930's Moran State Park Arch, 1932 And, for comparison, here is the same arch in 2009 - the arch was raised a number of years ago to accommodate taller vehicles Westsound Store, 1934 Observation Tower on Mt. Constitution, 1936 - this was built by the CCC boys along with many of the structures in Moran State Park Westsound, 1936 Westsound School, 1936 - my grandma on my mom's side is shown in this picture - she's the 5th kid in from the left in the second row. My grandpa's cousin, who I knew when she was much older, is the school teacher on the far right at the back Westsound, 1938 Episcopal Church in Eastsound, 1939 Orcas School in Eastsound, 1940 Main Street & Templin's Grocery Store in Eastsound, 1941 Westsound, 1948 Templin's, 1952 Deer Harbor, 1960 Main Street in Eastsound, 1960 Westsound Marina, 1961 Main Street in Eastsound sometime between 1962 & 1967 Eastsound, 1962 Eastsound, 1966 Eastsound, sometime between 1967-1971 Eastsound, 1968 Eastsound, 1975

I seem to remember way back when cruising the San Juan's in our Thunderbird (the boat not the car) seeing a Bastion somewhere in a bay. I don't know it was on Orcas or on San Juan itself. Does anyone else happen to remember seeing/hearing of this?

I was trying to find my grand aunt's house on Prune Alley- now moved to the Deer Harbor area- but I couldn't quite spot it in the aerial shots. Eastsound looks like it has been a very nice little town at all stages of it's development. One of the people I met last week was an island elder named Virginia Jensen. I got the impression that probably half the island knew her, and she was a wealth of island insight and history. I very much enjoyed the museum, and now I'm in the process of ploughing through all the references to my family in the San Juan Islander newspaper, available on the 'Chronicling America' website. I get sidetracked looking at all the steamer and ferry ads. I expect to go back to Orcas in the fall, hopefully with my daughters. Wonderful place.

Wow, these photos are awesome! I've always wanted to visit Orcas Isalad as it appears in many of my view shots from North and West Vancouver. I noticed there is an observation tower in one of the photos. Is it still there if anyone knows?

Constitution is still there and still very much open to the public - best view from the island!

Thanks. Any recommendations on where to stay? I'm probably not the best resource when it comes to lodging on Orcas since I have a house there, and have never stayed at any of the local inns. It kind of depends on where you want to be on the island. There are lots of B&B's, a few hotels, and plenty of vacation rental houses. I would start by checking out the Chamber of Commerce web site: orcasislandchamber.com/For reviews of places, TripAdvisor has helped me in the past, especially when I don't know anything about a particular hotel. Good luck!

Thanks. Any recommendations on where to stay? The two places I've stayed were quite acceptable, but quite different. Depends on what you're looking for. The West Beach Resort is on the west side of the island, maybe ten minutes out of Eastsound. Nice cabins on the water, very quiet location. No internet service in the cabins, and no TV in the one I had. I think you're looking at $170 and up a night. The Eastsound Landmark is a hotel right in Eastsound with two bedroom suites with full kitchens, internet, and satellite TV. Quite decently appointed. I paid $129 a night for non-view. I would stay at either place again, but there are a number of other more or less luxurious facilities on the island.

Wow! those are all great shots! If only to have a time machine.
Actually the colour photos look like they were taken right out of an issue of Beautiful BC magazine, except for the crucial fact they're from the San Juans instead of the Gulf Islands.

I've posted a couple of these over the years, but not all of them. Don Waite, the guy who took these, is a Maple Ridge resident who's been doing aerial photography for the last 30-40 years. He's a household name in Maple Ridge; everybody knows him for his photos, and occasionally you'll see his work used in local papers or printed ads.

BC Ferries use to do two boat service on the Snug Cove-Horseshoe Bay in 1991? Queen of Capilano had just been moved to the Bowen Island run. She was first put on Route 7 and after the Cumberland was built, this freed up Queen of Tsawwassen which was then put in place on Route 7 and thus moving Cappie to Bowen Island. The Hound Dog was moved to the Vesuvius- Crofton run. In this photo the Capilano was not yet in service likely still having her crews being trained on her. This expalains why Hound Dog is getting ready to round Tyee Point.
