What boat is the Samish replacing in the San Juan Islands??? I think she would be too big to be the inter island boat. I would actually love to go to the open house but I have to get my passport renewed first. I knew as soon as my passport expired that something interesting would come up that I would want to go the states for, lol!

Samish will replace Hyak, kicking it down to Bremerton at the beginning of the summer schedule, according to the Maintenance Schedule. Kaleetan will go into drydock at that time. Yes, I know the maintenance schedule is not something to be taken too seriously at this time, but for now, this is WSF's rotation. Ultimately, after Kaleetan is out of drydock and back in service, it would be nice to see Kitsap pulled from Bremerton and have 2 Supers there, at least until Chimacum gets built.

Here's what she did today: Pleased to see the Samish is out and about for builders' trials! Maybe we will see her in the islands at the start of the schedule...

I would like to ride on her when she gets done, but idk if I can.... only if she moves down south for some reason.... bi-sea, brem-sea, kingston-edmonds that sort of stuff while other boats are down/in maintenance

Got a rare glimpse of Samish about 30 minutes ago from our house. Sorry for the quality of the photos, but I barely had time to get my camera out for the shots, let alone a tripod, so without the benefit of stabilization, the first pic, in particular, is a little shaky. Just in time to brighten up your weekend (especially for you islanders) there is a shiny new Samish sitting at Colman Dock. :-)

The 4th Olympic is in both of the Transportation Packages by the Senate and House. If they come to agreement on the differences between the bills.

It would be great if they could get it through. Too bad they couldn't have gotten four of them to start off with. The Chimacum would be near completion and the fourth would have quite a bit of progress made. This is taking way too long. Gotta love the politics involved.

Building a 4th Olympic Class vessel would be the right thing to do. The Supers are really showing their age. Of course, they are almost 50 years old, so I guess we should not be too surprised that they are requiring more and more fixes to keep them going. Also, building a 4th Olympic will allow the complete retirement of the Evergreen State Class with sufficient reserve vessels.

I think it is best for WSF to keep the Tillikum as last ditch backup vessel because of what happen to Tacoma and Walla Walla it showed people WSF needs to have bigger backup vessel compared to the Hiyu.

Yes, it would be nice to keep Tillikum around for awhile because of the need to have a smaller vessel in reserve to sub-in for the inter island ferry when needed. But, there is the whole 60 year retirement date the state has put in place for ferries. Evergreen was, of course, supposed to be retired last year, but because of the lack of reserve vessels, and mechanical issues plaguing the fleet, she's been given a stay of execution. But, with Samish and Chimacum coming online in the near future, we can be sure Evergreen will be finally retired very soon. Klahowya will need to be retired in 2018, and Tillikum in 2019 if the state sticks to the 60 year self-imposed vessel retirement mandate. With 4 Olympic class vessels in the fleet, we would have 3 reserve vessels in the summertime, and up to 5 reserve vessels in the winter, two of which would most likely be Elwha and Hyak.

From my contacts with the Surplus Officer, the HIYU will be up for sale shortly and likely gone before fall. The Evergreen has been given a stay until June 2017.

And now for a free evaluation of this article... Personally, I think they should stop with Chimacum and start a ~160-car ferry project to replace the Supers. I do like the idea of running ferries on LNG. It'll help save my ski seasons. Terrific. That class sure got off to a rocky start... They can serve Bainbridge in a pinch. The only routes they can't operate are Port Townsend and Sidney. Sounds like Elwha on the Rocks' worst nightmare.

I heard the sun deck is only open from Thursday to Sunday and on sailing from 10 am to 8 pm. www.southwhidbeyrecord.com/news/307200651.htmlHopefully the state can find money to increase this to all days, 365 days a year and all sailing.

Good News! Washington State Ferries updated the Olympic Class project page indicating that we are indeed going to receive the 4th ferry in the class. The new transportation package funded the 3rd Olympic and probably the 4th. I wish we had these four sooner but we are past that point. It is suspected a 3rd vessel will go to Bremerton but I do wonder if they would consider modifying the design to emulate more of the Supers? Once thing I noticed on the top passenger deck is the overlap of the solarium ends is what makes them look a bit overly bulging and top heavy. A 4th vessel would be interesting to see where it will go to.

A 4th vessel would be interesting to see where it will go to. Which existing similar-sized ship is the next likely to die?
