This is for FerryNutSeattle, and others who like ferries with mountains. This is Queen of Cowichan (our 2nd best ship ), taken from Jack Point on April 18, 2010. I like the jagged mountain in the background. Not a great ferry photo for sharpness, but a neat ferry/mountain photo.

I think you can call that spectacular mountain British Columbia's version of the famous European Alps mountain Matterhorn. I've seen Disneyland's version of the Matterhorn. That's only a fraction of the size of the real thing. There are no amusement rides in the real mountains, though. Just super natural scenery the big man above gave us to see and appreciate. Besides riding ferries, I come up to BC to see your mountains. I leave speechless. At least we have the town of Index to go to here in Washington State and enjoy looking at the spectacular sight of Mount Index and Mount Persis rising above the river, town buildings and swing sets, and railway tracks. Thanks for that photo. Ferry captains sure have the best offices (the ship's bridges) in any of the workplaces here on our planet. Beautiful and changing scenery everyday is offered to them. I sure think the folks on the bridges of the QUEEN OF COWICHAN agree!

Actually, the effect on the photo makes it look kind of whimsical, or mystical, almost like a heat mirage. Maybe the Cowichan is the Flying Duchman of the fleet.
As for the view, surely the captains of our local vessels have great scenery, but I wonder if you ask the captain of a deep sea ship, once they get off from shore, and there's nothing to see but the vast, endless unchanging line of the horizon and endless expanse of empty ocean for days on end. They must rejoice when the come within sight of the shore again and are actually able to see something on the horizon again.

They must rejoice when the come within sight of the shore again and are actually able to see something on the horizon again. That's one good question to ask the captains who delivered the new ferries from Germany as well as the second hand vessel from Greece. Past historical voyage info of the NORTHERN EXPEDITION. Not a current voyage. Just look how many days it took for one of these to cross the Atlantic. Practically the only interesting things to see are the different cloud formations and some possible lightning storms as well as the moon and some sea life that come to the surface from time to time. Fog, too. This is the same for the passengers who traveled across the Atlantic in those big ocean liners. Same for those who went to Hawaii from San Francisco aboard the Matson ships. This is also the same for the crews who took the Pacificats across to UAE, to a greater extent. We are very lucky to have scenery here to see. We can get on ferries, like the QUEEN OF COWICHAN et al, and enjoy this on clear days.

A few photos taken yesterday onboard the 6:30 sailing to Horseshoe Bay... I'm assuming that's 6:30 AM? EDIT: Yup, it's 6:30am. You're sailing TOWARDS the sun, and the run RISES in the EAST, which is the direction you'd be sailing when you're going to HSB, so unless for some reason the sun is rising in the evening, then it's AM.

Queen of Cowichan in Howe Sound, headed for Horseshoe Bay. - Photos taken on July 19, 2010 from on-board the Coastal Renaissance. - with Bowen Island's Snug Cove in the background. The disappearing behind the point highlights the Cowichan's "C-Class Version 1" distinguishing profile.

From another thread: Hope this is the right boat? ------------ Nice find. Unfortunately, you do have the wrong vessel. That is likely the Queen of Cowichan, the main giveaway is that the end of one of the pickle fork decks (that is the outside deck above the upper car deck located at both ends of the Cowichan and Coquitlam for the newbies here) is in the camera shot.

From: " From Frontier to Freeway" Queen's Printer for British Columbia © Victoria, 1986 [No author or photographer noted] www.ferrypicsbygraham.fotopic.net/p49095626.html"The 25-car 'Comox Queen' is dwarfed by 362-car 'Queen of Cowichan' one of the latest additions to the B.C. Ferries fleet, shown in the aerial photo at Esquimalt Harbour near Victoria. The big, new 6650-tonne, 140-metre long ferry was receiving finishing touches before going into service. One-quarter its length and one-tenth its tonnage, the 'Comox Queen' was in for annual refit. By coincidence the Canadian Armed Forces minesweeper, left, is also named 'Cowichan'." www.ferrypicsbygraham.fotopic.net/p49095624.htmlQueen of Cowichan in her early years

I still say even to this day the Queen of Cowichan and Coquitlam are the best looking Double ended ships ever built in the World.

I like the Cowichan and Coquitlam alot better than the Oak Bay and Surrey even though they have a smaller passenger deck. But I do agree they can be cramped when it's a full sailing!
