Three photos of the Oaky, taken on July 6th, with exception of the latter, from July 7th. She mistook me for Mike and hid behind a grassy island. Comes back out and heads to Departure Bay. On her way to Nanaimo, mid-strait.

I like that angle. It seems like the only one that makes the Oaky marginally decent. Good picture

Esquimalt Harbour with the Queen of Oak Bay (construction just completed), SS Prince George, and a Canadian Navy vessel, the HMCS Columbia - 23 May 1981 photo © JST - Kodachrome slide 81-06-10 - Nikon-VueScan - hosted on my FlickrThe Queen of Oak Bay is shown here just a few weeks before her inaugural voyage on Route 1 on 13 June 1981. On the other hand, the S/S Prince George was near the end of her career. It appears that she has just been fired up hence all the smoke. All three vessels were built on the west coast of Canada, the Oak Bay & Prince George at Esquimalt's Yarrows yard, and the Columbia at Burrard, North Vancouver (info supplied by Mr. DOT).

No problems stopping the ship. 1. LOL @ your caption. 2. Do you think Oak Bay is in mode 1 in that shot? I don't see any churn from the east end prop. I thought the Cs always used mode 2 for docking.

2. Do you think Oak Bay is in mode 1 in that shot? I don't see any churn from the east end prop. I thought the Cs always used mode 2 for docking. I've checked the series of photos that I took: - they stopped the stern-prop quite a ways out from the dock - no prop wash from either end for the glide to the dock - then the bow-prop started right at the moment that I took the photo that you quoted. I'll post a timeline sequence of photos of this event. ....but it will be done later this afternoon.

The Queen of Oak Bay's landing sequence, at Departure Bay on 12/23/2011. ....for those interested in the prop-action at the bow and at the stern. Some of these photos are grainy because of the cropping to highlight the prop action. ---------------------- In the bay, stern prop still engaged Prop has been cut, stern-wash is settling down No wash at bow or at stern, she's gliding free She's at the end of the dolphins, and still no sign of prop-wash from either end. First sign of prop-wash. At the bow. Full prop wash at the bow, and she's almost at the ramp. - stern shows no wash First hint of some prop-wash at the stern.

Queen of Oak Bay seen on 12/30/2011 from Gabriola Island: - with Queen of Cowichan. Cowichan is operating as the #2 ship out of Departure Bay, so that's why these 2 ships are meeting so close to Departure Bay.
