I like this dawn photo because it gives the illusion that Queen of Oak Bay dwarfs Coastal Inspiration. - taken from Pipers Lagoon beach in Nanaimo. Dec.7, 2013. One of the enjoyable aspects of ship photography is the variety of views from different angles, each making the ship look different than from another view. Same thing when you change perspective by placing a smaller ship in the foreground. Totally agree with you; I love how the Oak Bay looks bigger than a Coastal.

BC Ferries has started the process for the Oak Bay and Surrey's "TLU," or "Three quarter life upgrade." -I'm surprised that there's nothing about the Cowichan and Coquitlam.

I wonder if BCFerries plans to just let the Coquitlam/Cowichan run out the rest of their service lives without the upgrade. Logic would be that they might already be past the prime time for this kind of upgrade. I'm just speculating, but I'm not sure if 5 years age difference between C.1 & C.2 makes much difference. For instance, maybe the Coquitlam is in too rough of shape to make a TLU worthwhile, from a cost-vs-benefit view?

I saw a business opportunity a few months ago regarding addressing "ballast issues" on the Oak Bay during her TLU. I imagine that part of the reason for the refit has to do with this.

Oakie in a pan (the new dessert, available in a Coastal Café near you) Nicely done here, with your pan. That makes the ferry really stand out. Can your camera zoom in/out when taking a picture? If it does then I guess you could do a really nice zoom pan like the one of the Spirit of Kingston I got back in October.

I'll see if I can do that kind of thing.

The approaches of the Route-2 & Route-30 ships converge at noon. Here is Queen of Oak Bay, with Queen of Alberni in background. I believe this is the tug Helen J (Jones Towing) in the foreground. - March 23, 2014, seen from Pipers Lagoon park

Here's a from-a-distance video of various ferries near Departure Bay, Nanaimo. - shot from Pipers Lagoon park, on 3/23/2014.
Queen of Oak Bay and Queen of Cowichan are the main players in this.

Queen of Oak Bay arriving to Departure Bay, at approx. 8:30pm on April 12, 2014. - seen from Sugarloaf Mountain. A clear, moon-lit evening, where the lighting and sailing combined to have the ferry arrive during dusk's golden-hour. The Nares Point money-shot With Queen of Coquitlam --------------- And her departing on her 9:00pm sailing. Nanaimo's Sugarloaf Mountain is a great place to sit for a while, relaxing and watching the activities in the bay below. It can be windy, but that's what a fleece jacket and toque are for.

This video of mine features Queen of Oak Bay quite prominently, in the latter part of this compilation.
I'm very happy with the lighting when the Oakie arrived at Nanaimo. And I think that the sped-up unloading & loading process is fun to watch.

Oakie seen from Neck Point park in Nanaimo. - April 27, 2014 Inbound to Nanaimo, in the late afternoon. She was running 20-minutes late at this point, and it got worse on her Departure Bay turnaround for her 5:00pm sailing - that's typical of a Sunday evening while still on a 2-hour turnaround. The extra-time schedule starts May 15th, allowing more turnaround time in the terminal. - Her service day will start 10 minutes earlier and will end 30 minutes later. Also the mid-day break will be squeezed. This happens every year for all Route-2 ships.

On the evening of May 4th 2014, I did some photography work at Departure Bay. I wanted to try some low light photos and panning. Oak Bay was 30 minutes late on her 7:00pm trip from Horseshoe Bay, so it was after 9:00pm when she arrived, well after sunset. - 'Cowichan was even worse for schedules on that evening, over 90 minutes late on her final sailing of the night. ...and for dessert, here is "Oak Bay in a Pan"
