A Photographic Update - Wednesday @ DuskFrom the Ironworkers Memorial / Sedond Narrows Bridge Nice shot of my train! The following is a little off topic... It took us 3 attempts to make it over the bridge. The fuel pump on the trailing unit crapped out and we had to grab a third engine from the shops and put it on the train. It took us 12 hours to get to Surrey.

Awesome photography!
It is amazing to see the details that we may miss when so many still shots are taken to show something in motion.

Before and AfterSupports are cut and knocked away within 10 minutes of launch-timeOn the way down Again, there's one second between these pictures, which really demonstrates how slowly the Kuper actually slid.Still RockingJoined by a FriendLater

Getting photos at Chemainus is no fun anymore, because they've now locked the gates at the marina now, so you can't go down to the docks, and basically touch the ferry anymore.

Kuper photos, taken from Chemainus on March 27, 2010: With Kuper Island in the background Making her way to Chemainus. Kuper Island ferry landing is seen in the left background, to the left of the light-marker. Blowing some smoke. Entering the Horseshoe Bay area at Chemainus. Making her turn into the ferry landing at Chemainus, in the busy lumber-town harbour.

Great shots, Mike! Interesting to see they have added a longer pipes to the M/E exhausts... Were on a ferry photography blitz today? I saw you at Departure Bay getting photos of the Cowichan when I was on my way to pick up dinner...

I saw you at Departure Bay getting photos of the Cowichan when I was on my way to pick up dinner... Thanks. I was train-chasing this evening. I followed the WCRA passenger cars from Wellington down to Chemainus. I was surprised to see train-foamers at a few locations, sometimes the same people leap-frogging ahead, just like me. I'll post the train photos tomorrow. .....and with the Kuper photos I was experimenting with "TV" mode on my Canon, and I was happy with the results.

I traveled to Chemainus on Sept.20, 2010, so that I could take my first ride ever on the MV Kuper. I chose the 9:45am sailing from Chemainus, since that's one of the few round-trip sailings that calls at both islands. I was able to get photographs of the 3 terminals; those are posted in the ferry-terminal photo threads. For my pictures of the Kuper, I found a new on-shore vantage point in Chemainus, in a park (with a boat launch ramp) at the foot of Maple St., so that I could photograph the ship as she emerged from the Chemainus harbour. I also took some photos from the Chemainus terminal ramp. And of course I had the opportunity for on-board photos.....which was the purpose of my trip. =============== Photos of Kuper arriving at Chemainus terminal: - notice the metal gate at the end of the car-deck. ------------- Photos from the Maple St. boat-ramp in Chemainus: - she comes into view briefly, before disappearing behind a barge. - You can see the marine evacuation system equipment, in the port-aft section of the hull. The other one is starboard-forward. - passing between the markers. - on her way to the little islands.

MV Kuper: a walk on her car deck, on Sept.20, 2010: 4 Lanes of traffic. When she's leaving Chemainus on a trip to both islands, the traffic is all facing the same direction. I am the troll underneath the bridge. - note the curved smoke-pipe on the port side. - note the fire-system pipe running the length of the interior starboard bulkhead. Nice metal gates (more on those in my next post) You can see the fire-system pipe on the left side of my photo. The overhead bridge was a renovation done in North Vancouver. On the trip between Penelakut & Thetis islands, there is multi-directional traffic on the car-deck.

MV Kuper: on Sept 20, 2010: --------------- I looked for things with the old "John Atlantic Burr" name showing, but found nothing. I asked about the ship's bell, and they don't have a bell with the old name (I never saw any bell). - this is the closest thing that I found to indicate the past-life in Utah: The passenger lounge is on one side of the ship's hull. The Transport Canada license details: - I'm not sure what "ratiating" means.... ;D ----------------- And those car-deck gates: - at Thetis Island berth - Underway. Dayman Island is coming up on the starboard side. ============ One last thing: the MV Kuper's home-port is Thetis Island.
