So let me get this straight: They stretched the FERRY ITSELF, as well as the upper deck snack bar/buffet/horseshoe lounge? Because I remember that one the QoNW and the Burnaby, that aft area is no longer accessible.

That ventilator, BTW, brought odours from the galley wafting up to the sun deck resulting in either an intense hunger or the urge to toss your breakfast. The smell was usually like that from a large vat of french fry deep frying oil... The Queen of Tsawwassen had the same feature with the ventilator. Especially when breakfast was being served. It was very intoxicating standing next to the ventilator. I've always wondered why they had to ruin that nice stern deck during the stretching. The only real reason it was close off was to use the space for the upper deck kitchens for the restaurants installed which ultimately became the buffets. They should have put the kitchens at the other end, and kept those nice stern windows, but unfortunately, everything needed to be at the stern to be in the same location as cafeteria kitchen one deck below and facilitate using the dumbwaiter service to the upper deck.

Some proof that the Queen of Victoria still exists according to my credit card bill. These are actually purchases made on the Queen of Nanaimo.

they must have mixed up the words "BCF-" and "Queen of". They should be switched.

Credit card purchases I make on the ferries usually show up that way eg: BCF-Coquitlam, Queen of Victoria BC. It means the vendor is BCF-Coquitlam, Queen of. The location is Victoria, BC since that is where the BCF head office is. The lack of a single comma in the appropriate place certainly changes the meaning of the entry!

I just went through alot of my credit card records to compare for other ships.....the other ships have it setup a little different. For other ships it was BCF - QVancouver Victoria BC, BCF - CoastalRen Victoria BC, BCF - QTsa Victoria BC. Anyways, just thought it was funny to point out the "Queen of Victoria" one.

Global BC has uploaded some historical videos from its archives to commemorate their 50th anniversary. One video uploaded is of the Sergey Yesenin being removed from the port side of the Queen of Victoria. Video here.

Ugh. That still makes me cringe. I'm really grateful that the person who happened to be filming that day with his 8-millimetre camera didn't have a sound strip on it.

Here are three Queen of Victoria postcards that I scanned today.

I think I have the top two postcards you posted, but I sure don't have the third one at the bottom! I didn't even know a postcard ever existed of her with that sort of format! I figured those postcards came out in the mid to late 90's, when the Victoria was in lay up at Deas. Now I'll be hunting to track down a copy of that one for myself to add to the collection ;D

Queen of Victoria backing out of Tsawwassen Terminal, c1982. Photo by Mr. DOT. Click on image to open an enlarged version. This photo is one of the newer offerings on my Flickr site. This is a fresh scan from one of my brother's many negatives of bygone days of the Dogwood Fleet. This same photo has been seen here before - on one of the many pages of the Historical BC Ferry photos thread, I do believe. The actual date of this photo would be between the time Miss Vicky was lifted (1981), and the time she and her sisters acquired the BC Spirit logos in 1983.

I would point out that it is probably earlier in that range, since she has yet to have a nose job.

Interesting. I thought that they had come almost right after lifting. Learn something new every day!

Were the nose-jobs both to make it easier to lower the ramps onto the car deck, AND to better the visibility from the wheelhouse, or just for one of those?
BTW, great photo, DOT!

The nose jobs were done to speed the task of lowering the ramps onto the upper car deck. Apparently modifications were also made at the stern for the same reason. The change at the bow would no doubt have had a secondary benefit of improving the bow view during docking procedures at Tsawwassen.

Ok, seriously. No, obviously not just at Tsawwassen. I was just wondering... Maybe at Tsawwassen there's a visibility issue due to something that gets (or got, at the time) in the way of docking. Maybe TSA gets a larger tidal variation than the other terminals do. Maybe At the other terminals, they had something set up so the bridge crew could easier see, like a mirror similar to the kind you'll see in corner stores so the cashier can watch for shoplifters. There could be lots of odd circumstances where maybe it was worse at Tsawwassen then elsewhere. Questions harm nobody.

Single-enders berth stern-to at island terminals and bow-in at Tsawwassen and Horseshoe Bay as traffic is facing that direction. The reverse is done to have traffic in the right direction when driving off at island terminals.
