:)one thing to bear in mind when morning the loss of our onetime city and other geographically named vessels is their size often precludes further uses, and more modest sized vessels can more readily converted to other uses! no one is more displeased than I am to see my old Queen of Sidney and other discusting disposals. at least my first ship, the QPR, has found a further life and dignity! mrdot.

I imagine there's going to be some mixed feelings among ferry fans, seeing the name repainted, just to commemorate her trip south to the wreckers. And there's the miserable looking little ex-Alaska ferry Chilkat, finding a new career in BC waters as a scallop processing boat, while the vessel beside her, named for BC's largest city, is sent to meet the torches. Ouch, this irony hurts. As much as I am a great fan of Fanny Bay Scallops, I think a BC Ferry would be a tad bit big for them ;D.

Not to be nitpicky here, the Esquimalt and Saanich are both V-Class, there is no such thing as an E-Class. The Burnaby Class trio of Nanaimo, New West, and Burnaby, they are not refered to as N-Class. While these are actually "V-Class" ferries, I've separated them out into "Subclasses" due to construction differences prior to lengthening. Mechanical housing on the house topsThe V-Subclass had a flat face and these ferries had three whistles, the E-Subclass had a curved face and these ferries had two whistles, and the N-Subclass had a curved face and was cut aft exposing more of the funnel and these ferries have three whistles. Other notesThe three middle wheelhouse windows were lower on the V-Subclass while the others had them installed straight across. The aft mast was deleted on the N-Subclass and the forward masthead light was installed on a mast behind the wheelhouse and the aft masthead light was mounted on the mast containing the radars.

Somebody needs to photoshop an image of the Grim Reaper onto the bow of the Alan G. in that last shot, given it's recent role in the disposal of our departing Vs.

Alan G is on the move again. She's just emerging from area Whiskey Gulf, and will be abeam of Parksville shortly. Her AIS says she's bound for Fanny Bay now.
I beginning to think that the Saanich will not be part of this tow?

Do you know approximately when she will be departing today? The Tug ALAN G is arriving at Fanny Bay at this time. I guess departure time is "soon".

According to MarineTraffic.com, the Alan G has arrived in Fanny Bay, and I assume she is now tying up to the Vancouver to prepare for the voyage south.

As soon as I find out when they will be passing Sechelt, I will head down to the waterfront for any photo opportunities.

Does anyone have a position on the Alan G? Not a recent reading, but as of 50 minutes ago, MarineTraffic indicates that the Alan G is underway at 3.2 knots. The tug appears to be facing land (west) however we will have to watch closely for more up-to-date information. I am hoping that the AIS becomes more real-time once the vessel actually starts her journey south.

You'll probably need to adjust the above times as the Tug ALAN G is estimated to leave Fanny Bay at 0645PDT this morning, according to the pilot order.

Man, this is killing me (not really, I'm over-reacting).
I'm stuck in my office, while the Alan G & Vancouver tow are slowly sailing past my town, close enough to shore for good photos.
.........but life is a balance of work and play, as the Book of Ecclesiastes would remind me.
But, if I didn't have work today and could play today, I would be out on Gabriola Island at Orlebar Point, waiting for the tow to pass by Entrance Island lighthouse....
sigh.

"If only, if only," the woodpecker sighs, "the bark on the tree was as soft as the skies..." I myself will be trying to get post-work photos from Tsawwassen Beach at around 7:30-8 pm. I'm not sure how they will turn out, but it will be documentation nonetheless.
