Photos from her departure from Fanny Bay can be seen on the Queen of Vancouver board, located here.
Additional photographs are on my Flickr site.
At 1426, the Vancouver passed the vessel that replaced her, the Coastal Inspiration.

Thanks for that Scott. Any word on the Saanich? It appears as though the plan to bring her along fell through in the last few days. If someone knows the "for sure", we would appreciate knowing. Alan G has increased speed since it was off Nanaimo, so it appears it will be passing Tsawwassen earlier than first expected. Probably closer to 1830. At 1621, Coastal Inspiration passed close to Alan G on her way to Tsawwassen.

Alan G and ex-Vancouver are now at roughly 49 56 123 13. Spirit of BC and C. Celebration are within spitting distance! Siitech is showing lots of other sister-ships in the area: VI, Bowen, Cumberland, Nanaimo, CC and BC are all fairly close by. I wish I had the proper radio. Wonder what the other ferries would say - if they could. Maybe something like "Alan G, (name of ferry), please relay to Queen of Vancouver gracias and adios." Don't know what MCTS would say about direct transmissions like that, though.

At 1829, the SoBC sailed past her former Tsawwassen-based running mate, en route to Tsawwassen.

:)with all the 'wringing of hands' that is being expressed for the Q of Van., I think of the awful state that our very first BC ferry finds her self in at her Fraser river junk pile along with the Washington State pioneer San Mateao, as well as Kalakala, and others, and I think the Mexican recycling yard is a better place! :'(mrdot.

Here is where the tow was a few minutes ago: If a camp session is occurring at Camp Orkila, the kids may have been seeing the QUEEN OF VANCOUVER pass by Saturna Island during the evening camp fire. Orkila is a beautiful camp to send kids to. Lots of things to do and lots of nature to enjoy. You can see some of the Canadian Gulf Islands from Orkila. Here is a link to the webcams of the western side of San Juan Island: www.islandcam.com/westside.htmlWe may be out of luck seeing the VANCOUVER from these cams as it is getting dark. Perhaps the cams at Victoria as well as Race Rocks. Developing fog, if any, is an issue as well. If the tow meets a Princess Cruises ship during daylight, we might have a small chance in seeing the tow as they have cams above their bridges.

I was down at the breakwater here in Victoria tonight and yeah there is fog out over by Port Angeles and someone we know who is on a cruise on the Westerdam said they were in fog over by Port Angeles today. The only cruise ships they could meet tommorrow would be the Norwegian Pearl and Star Princess have cams but the Oosterdam dosent which all three of those ships are enroute to Victoria due in tomorrow evening so I dont know if they would see the tug.
I wonder when she will pass Los Angeles as I will be down there from Sunday to Friday this next week. Wouldent be able to see her anyways though.

Perhaps Point Loma in San Diego may be a spot for any slight view of the tow. The tow may be ten or twenty miles off shore, though. A good pair of binoculars may be handy to have or a telescope. All we hope for is the tow to pass Avalon (a webcam viewpoint location) in the daylight and with adequate visibility. Meanwhile, the tow has altered courses off Turn Point. This is as close as the QUEEN OF VANCOUVER would get to the southern terminus of her originally intended route.

Our 'City of Vancouver was meant for me. She always "belonged" to me. She was "mine".
Certainly I grew-up in a transitional phase of society as we know it. I have a "coffee table book" that endorses her and other vessels' elevators as being great because they were on-hand to transport the "invalid" who never previously would have made it above a vehicle deck. I guess that the question remains regarding service delivery and the CPR's BCCSS.
Lifted, stretched or in her original form, my "other" favourite (her being of our lower coast and formerly our QPR being of our Northern Coast) has always been Phillip A. Spaulding's City of Vancouver.

At 0130PDT, the Pilot Boat PACIFIC SCOUT relieved the ALAN G of the pilot. The ALAN G is now setting out for a long Pacific coastal voyage to Ensenada. We may be able to see the tug on the Race Rocks cam: www.racerocks.com/racerock/video1frame.htm

Hi all. I just joined the forum because of what I saw last night, and found answers to my questions here. Thanks for all the info! As my username implies, our home is located on the water at Gowlland Point, South Pender Island (the G.P. lighthouse is at our 2 o'clock view position, 150 meters away). I saw the tow emerging on the horizon shortly after it rounded East Point. Made it by the house a bit after 2200 on 8/10. Our group on the patio doubted me when I said it was a BCF, due to no lights except basic navigation ... "surely they'd run a generator and have crew on even under tow." I said, "not if the generators no longer exist!" We all knew truth when she drew closer and scrutinized with binocs, as best we could in the darkness. It was especially eerie to note the lifeboats missing and car deck-level doors either open or removed, as well as the BCF nomenclature gone. Not sure if the name was still painted on the bow. I guessed it was the Esquimalt until I read this thread. Having just celebrated my 50th birthday on the same patio one week earlier, I was hit pretty hard by the emotions of seeing her go ... I logged countless sailings on the Vancouver to reach Pender via Swartz Bay over the near-half century of her service. It was weird to see the somewhat stripped hulk with all those memories slip off into the night. So long old friend ...

I'm curious regarding the prep for the Q of V tow ... do they fix the rudder at zero degrees, or remove it? Are there any crew at all on board? Electronic monitoring for leaks, fire or other potential problems? I guess the weather is forecast to be fine, but it seems off to remove the car deck doors, especially the bow doors, for a passage down the West Coast, in a ship with such a low true-hull freeboard by ocean-going standards. Any thoughts?
Would a tow such as this be charged at an hourly rate plus expenses (pilot, port fees, environmental compliance, insurance, customs, etc.), or bid at a flat rate for the whole package?
Finally, would the Alan G require enroute refueling, or does it carry a sufficient supply to make Ensenada?

Has this CTV story regarding BC Ferries after-service life made it onto the forum yet? Interesting ...
