Found some updated Google Earth images of Ensenada, Mexico. This shows the QUEEN OF VANCOUVER being dismantled. September 26, 2012 Some of the midships structure was still aboard the vessel. You can see the many parts of the ship scattered around the facility. You can also spot whats left of the bridge. September 29, 2012 All of the upperworks, except for the ladderway and mechanical casing, were off the vessel. A closeup of what was left of the QUEEN OF VANCOUVER on September 29, 2012. We zoom out a bit. Don't know if that bow section seen in the upper central right of this image is that of the QUEEN OF ESQUIMALT, or another ship.

We zoom out a bit. Don't know if that bow section seen in the upper central right of this image is that of the QUEEN OF ESQUIMALT, or another ship. Seeing the hull makes her look terribly like a double ender. If I had no sense of scale and did not know that some bc ferries were in Ensenada, I would've mistaken this for a Steel Electric. The other hulk does not seem to be the Esquimalt, or at least not any part of her that you would expect to be above the waterline.

Just found some slides from back in the day from on the bridge of either the Vic, or the Van, and a couple engine room photos, too. They need to be digitized, first, but look pretty interesting, seeing the wheelhouse when the orange dogwood carpet was in place.

Queen of Vancouver loading at Tsawwassen Terminal's berth 3 for sailing to Swartz Bay - 1981. At this time only berth 3 could load the upper car decks on the newly lifted V-class ferries Vancouver & Victoria, as well as the brand new Queen of Oak Bay. The Oakie operated for about one year on route 1, just until the other two V's ( Esquimalt & Saanich) had also been lifted. photo © Mr. DOT by Wett Coast, on Flickr

This time last year, the Queen of Vancouver was in Fanny Bay, being prepared for her tow south to the scrapyard.
One year ago already, wow.

No date on this slide, but she's still the City of Vancouver here.

No date on this slide, but she's still the City of Vancouver here. She was only the City of Vancouver for about one year from when she was new until when her sisters the Esquimalt & Saanich came on line. It was when those two ships entered service that BCF decided to standardize on 'Queen' names and existing ships in the fleet were re-branded as such. So the date of the slide would be 1962 or early in 1963. Note also the ferry is flying to old Canadian 'Red Ensign' flag which was replaced by the Mapleleaf flag on 15 February 1965.

:)I'am old enough to remember the red ensign flying from our flagstaf, but it was replaced by the new ensign by my start on deck with my QPR and later Swartz Bay service! :)mrdot.

Video shot on what I think is a pre-MLU Saanich, but I could definitely be convinced otherwise. Good footage of 1990 Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay.
Unidentified V at 6:28 Queen of Tsawwassen at 10:20 Queen of Victoria at 13:10 Whistle at 16:19

Queen of Vancouver at 6:28 Queen of Tsawwassen at 10:20 Queen of Victoria at 13:10 Whistle at 16:19 Great find! Thanks for posting it. I have one question: at 14:33 in the video, you see the ship's bell which has the words "City of Vancouver 1962" etched into it. Did all of the V-Class ferries have that exact wording etched into their bells, or were those words specific only to Queen of Vancouver's bell? That would be my only indication that this vessel might be Queen of Vancouver, but you stated that the passing vessel at 6:28 in the video was Queen of Vancouver, so I really don't know.

Great Odin's Raven! I can't believe I missed that. That's definitely unique to the Vancouver. I'll move this to the appropriate thread, and turn identifying that V at 6:28 to people who actually know what they're talking about. >places ferry fan card on table<

6:28 is the Esquimalt. You can tell by the layout of the scuppers beheath the port side bullet windows at her stern.

That was a cool video! Neat to see Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay in the 90's. It would of been cool if they showed the interior back in those days would of been nice to see. According to the time on the video camera at the beginning it says 2:00pm which makes me think at that time the Queen of Vancouver was a 2pm departure from Tsawwassen making her #2 out of Swartz Bay? The Queen of Victoria was passing usually where a Spirit would pass now which makes me think the Victoria would of been the 3pm out of Swartz Bay making her the Swartz Bay based ship?? Which leaves the Saanich though as the Tsawwassen based boat with the Esquimalt being the Esquimalt passed in active pass running opposite the 2pm out of Swartz Bay which leaves the Saanich as the Tsawwassen based ship on the odd hours. What does everyone think???

After being changed to "Queen of", they did not change it on the bell and they remained "City of" for their lifetime. The Saanich and Esquimalt, along with Burnaby, New West and Nanaimo were launched after the change to "Queen of" and as such, the etching on their bells reflects this.

Scott has correctly pinned the identity of the V-class seen passing by in Active Pass.
The ship the video is shot from is most definitely the Vancouver. Its not only the name on the bell that gives this away, there is also a life ring seen at one point that clearly reads Queen of Vancouver.
A nice look back to route 1 almost 25 years ago.

Here is a scan of a b&w photo from the DOT collection. This shows a brand new City of Vancouver off Vancouver (the city) in 1962, probably before this vessel first began service on route 1. The photo originates from the BC Government's old 'Department of Travel Industry'. In the background you can make out Atkinson point light, & behind that, the Lion's Gate Bridge. In 1963 this vessel was renamed Queen of Vancouver. Mr. DOT collection by mrdot., on Flickr

This sailing looks like it may have been a promotional/unveiling type of trip and brings to mind the incredible ship-building capabilities we once had in Victoria and Vancouver that produced most of the ships that became ' Bennett's Navy'. The visions that dear old 'Wacky Bennett' had back in the day is something that is so lacking with the sad bunch in power today. Remember how proud we used to be of our ferry system? Lastly, a Department of Travel Industry eh? Today we have ??

Those 'Cat's Meow' beautiful ferries were a tribute to the excellent ship building capabilities we once had in British Columbia. Now..? Back in the day, BC Ferries worked hand in hand with the Department of Travel Industry, (another now defunct ministry), by having green jacketed Travel Councillors who had their own travel booths on all the ships. The travel gals were employed on major routes including route 10, and were often put through their paces as the agents had to 'council' the overnight captive American tourist passengers who often had a wide and wacky list of geographical questions. Ah, those were the days.
