My name is Peter Robson. I'm working with Harbour Publishing, collecting photos for the late Chuck Davis's unfinished book: The History of Metropolitan Vancouver. I'm having trouble getting a good photo of the MV Sidney or Tsawassen underway back in the 1960s.
Surprisingly, BC Ferries themselves won't give me a photo because their collection belongs to the provincial government (read BC Archives). Can anyone out there save us some legwork and contribute a high res photo (2 to 3 mb) to accompany the book's entry on the formation of the B.C. Highways and Bridges Toll Authority Ferries in 1960. We can't pay for an image, but we will certainly credit the photographer. I can be reached directly at peter@peterarobson.com.

Welcome here Peter. Thanks for seeing us as a photo-source for the book.
I'll reply to this thread with some suggestions for some 1960s or early-70s photos that are owned by our various forum members.
If there's some that you'd like to include in your book, please reply here to ask permission (and the photographer will hopefully see this and then reply to you), or send the person a Personal-Message to ask their permission. - then hopefully that person would be able to send you a full-size version of the photo.

Queen of Sidney approaching Tsawwassen Terminal - 14 April 1977. At the time of this photo the Sidney was serving as the Route 9 main vessel, based out of Long Harbour. I spent maybe an hour painstakingly 'cloning out' the dust from this scan. Enjoy! Kodachrome slide © JST - Hosted on my Flickr Photo Site - 77-02-17 - VueScan

This here is a great choice for the book: - the original configuation of the ship (before the pre-fab cafeteria was added to the stern). - what looks to be the red-ensign flag flying at the stern. Found an old slide of my grandfathers from 1960 with the Queen of Sidney in active pass. Cheers,

Queen of Sidney, c 1977. She appears to be backing out of Tsawwassen terminal, and has a good passenger load by the looks of things. I have no idea of why the flags... The photo is scanned from my brother's negative collection. He took the picture. He once worked as a deck hand on the Sidney when she was based out of Swartz Bay doing supplementary route 1 sailings with Gulf Island calls. DOT photo ©

Fresh from my slide/neg scanner... A then 12 year old Q of Tsawwassen in Georgia Strait en route from Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay. Date: 8 September 1972. The Tsawwassen was a regular on route 2 at that time. 1972 Kodachrome slide by JST ©

:)this very early shot of the Sidney in Active pass in the earliest of livery, and proudly flying the red ensign, is a joy to revisit! The later Queen of Sidney was a joy to work, probably the best engines the fleet ever had, and she was sweet to steer, only drawback was her narrow car deck, but her almost identical forerunner, mv Coho sails on, still looking smart! :)mrdot.

Wow! Thanks for the quick response! What a great resource to discover. I spent a great deal of time trying to get old Black Ball ferry shots and a good old SeaBus shot. Should have come here first. Great work! I've sent a personal message to Wett Coast about potentially using one of his photos. Can't wait to dig around in the forum posts archives.
Cheers,
Peter Robson

Peter Robson, look for a 'PM' from me re photos that I have (originating from my brother Mr. DOT and me) on my two web photo sites that are hyper linked in my 'signature'.
BTW, I believe the early BC Ferries archival material, including photos, went not the the BC Archives, but to the Maritime Museum of BC in Victoria. I believe they should have some good material from the very first few years in the early 1960's.

Displayed in the MMBC's BC Ferrries gallery is in fact a photograph of the current flag of British Columbia being raised for the first time by WAC Bennett aboard the Queen of Sidney, so there's a good chance that they have that image in their archives as well.

It is worthwhile to note that Chuck Davis`s The History of Metropolitan Vancouver has now been released. I will be seeking out a copy... www.harbourpublishing.com/title/ChuckDavisVancouver
