Here's an idea... How about a floating restaurant! It can be a re-incarnation of the Seven Seas Restaurant that was housed by the old North Van No. 5 ferry, only to be demolished 20 years later... Ok in all seriousness, The Sidney's in pretty rough shape and I'd hate to say this but I think it's time we just let her go. She won't see passenger service again. It is pretty obvious that there is very little public interest in saving her and her owners don't seem to care about her either. We have discussed this issue on this forum before, so I suggest you take a look at our 2005 Archives We have a few topics regarding this.

If you're not the owner of the ship, then there's no other choice but to let the owner do whatever he/she wants to do with it.
Sad for the ferry fan, but reality bites.

A good indication of just how much this forum has matured in four years is the 2005 thread "Help Save the Sidney!!" Good grief. Classic cascade, as he puffed himself up into the international contact for fund raising to save the poor old thing. Glad he didn't erase all his old posts before he quit.

Poor old Queen of Sidney..... Jordan is right though! Fortunately, many of us have gotten a tour of her since she's been on the Fraser River, now all we can do is sit and watch, and enjoy the last of the expo paint scheme! (I still think she looks fantastic in it!) I would like to have some of her carpet though

If you're not the owner of the ship, then there's no other choice but to let the owner do whatever he/she wants to do with it. Sad for the ferry fan, but reality bites. Even the owner of the ship might have to do the bidding of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans even if he doesn't like it. The DFO is apparently aware of the Queen of Sidney's situation and has expressed concerns at whiles as to the effect they don't really like that current situation very much... something about it potentially being a hazard to the river environment: the usual party lines about protecting waterways. So, the suggestion for the ferry fan is to become very good friends with higher ups in the DFO, or just start a massive lobbying scheme, and make sure that the Queen of Sidney then becomes a top priority for them. (Make sure to convert them to the ferry fan cause first). They will then issue the ultimatum to the owner to 'move it, or we will do it for you' and have the Queen of Sidney moved to another location less environmentally sensitive and more accessible to the ferry fan. If you want to go one step further: convince various local governments and interests about just how historically significant the Queen of Sidney is and how necessary it is to preserve her. Some highly motivated, clueless and crusading member of the government who doesn't have their own portfolio can then put traction under the wheels and make sure that the Sidney is save at whatever cost, using taxpayer money of course, because preserving our history is important, and the Sidney can then be raised up to an honored spot housed in a custom built billion dollar building on dry land at the local maritime museum right beside the St. Roch.

But why not build it right beside it's current location, to open up that area to more tourism?? I'm sure the local inhabitants of the area would appreciate that, as well. Maybe it could keep them on staff as caretakers, as long as there are no more late night parties in the forward lounge, and build them a nice dormitory which would maybe prevent anyone else from falling off one of the other ships tied up with the Sidney when drunk and drowning themselves. But seriously, if you knew the costs and the hideous bureaucratic process that went in to the most recent restoring of the St Roch, you would be incredulous, so why not try to make the money go farther this time and spread it over something a little bigger.

The Sidney Solution? Mostly water, iron oxide, and little bit of bunker oil. Why do you ask?

The Sidney was a wreck when we went aboard her 4 years ago. I could only imagine how ripped apart she is now.

Do you have any photos of her? I would ask for a tour, but no one would believe me when i show up and they see a fourteen-year old with a camera (with his mom waiting in the car)

Your Mom is welcome to attend too. Here's the thread on last year's trip: ferriesbc.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=gt&action=display&thread=4517
