We all need to remember that we're running beta software. Version 5 is not fully implemented yet, so we're one of the few forums who has helped to work some bugs out of this new software.
Some have already noticed improvements in both functionality and overall usability since we first starting running v5. I'm positive that there's still more to come...
We'll continue to help out our members to the best of our abilities...

The organization that was present in our 'Archives' seems to be gone. Furthermore I can't find entire threads. On the other hand it might just be me . I started a thread in May of 2007 titled something like "WCK's Spring 2007 Southern Adventure". I had photos posted there from time I spent on Galiano Island, in particular on a hike up Mt Galiano. I wanted to share this with Guy (SolDuc). I was unable to find that thread, or one from a few weeks earlier when I did a Haida Gwaii adventure aboard the then new NorAd. Where are those threads?

Upon further reflection, my negative reaction to V5 on our forum isn't so much that it is simply "change." My frustration is because I don't want to be Proboards' beta-tester. I'm busy enough and I don't need to add work to my hobby.
So having a not-ready beta-testing version-5 is frustrating because there are things I don't like or understand, and I don't really want to make the effort to push-through and be their beta-tester. I don't need that extra work to do.
Call me lazy if you wish. But I never asked to be their beta-tester, it's not what I visit the forum to do.
I don't mind learning a new way of doing something on the forum. But I don't like having to discover that something doesn't work, and then have it be up-to-me to ask for it to be fixed. I would have rather upgraded to a ready-to-go product.
I'm curious if this beta-testing issue has surprised Scott or Coastal Skier. Of if they know this would happen. - Maybe I missed something, but they never really told us that it would be like this......until we all started finding bugs. Was this expected ? If it was, then it would have been helpful if this reality had been spelled-out for all of us, right from the beginning.
I do not like it when I discover that I've become an unwilling beta-tester. I'd rather know that going-in. - I don't like bait-and-switch.
Comments on these points ?

It's interesting seeing all this discussion about the new version. And yet, with all the mentions of problems, I have not had any! I have yet to notice anything bad, or anything not working properly. This could also be due to the fact that I do not use many options of the forum, but all in all, I am a sailing satisfied!

This new version certainly has required some getting used to, and I have also felt some irritation that a feature that I liked has been removed (the preview post function) and other actions are now seemingly needlessly more complicated. But, I think that it can only go uphill from here as more bugs are fixed (and hopefully they bring back the preview post function), and everyone gets used to the changes that came with V5.

If it was, then it would have been helpful if this reality had been spelled-out for all of us, right from the beginning. While bugs do occur with beta software, I personally was not expecting the shear number of small issues to collectively make the forum overly frustrating to use. If we would have known of these relatively small issues ahead of time, I doubt we would have rushed into beta v5. That said, some issues have improved over the last two-weeks and they'll continue to do so until v5 is fully released. In the meantime, I apologize for the issues that some have experienced (...and continue to experience) since the "upgrade" occurred on Friday, January 18th. You can preview your post by clicking the BBCode tab, then clicking back onto the Visual tab.

One of the Problems I've experienced with V5 is that it Modifies my Posts. Sometimes it looks like I pressed the Space Bar a few too many times. Other Times it randomly adds a bunch of Script and Gibberish to my Quote. Here's what happened when I Copied and Pasted a Service Notice Last Week. It had Table which I felt was unnecessary. So I removed it. Another Note: I didn't realize at this point that it added a Bunch of Gibberish. I did when I cleaned it up though... Further Note: Now that I see this one Posted, The Table is Gone. Arrrrgh!! Here's the Cleaned Up Version. It was when I posted it I ran into the Gibberish Hurdle. Finally, here's the Finished Product. I do like the Copy and Paste Features cause it adds a little Spice to our Quotes but when I hit a Wall like this it takes some of the Fun out of it. I don't know if the Clean Version and the Table Version will add all the HTML Gibberish when I press Post so Hopefully I don't have to Modify this... Oh I spoke too Soon.

What is the point for friends on your profile? No real point, except to show off and say that there is a friend possibility.

Oh, and one of the few actual cool things about V5: In your preferences, you can enable a "save draft" for all your posts, so that they are saved if your computer crashes. Actually pretty useful.

I was working on a long reply to what Mr. Horn has written above. Apparently I lost it. I have enabled 'drafts', and theoretically can recover what I had written. Does anyone know how to go about doing that?

Reload (F5) the page and it should pop up with an overview of the draft and whether you would like to continue working on it or not. I'm not sure if it works with PMs though.

I've noticed that Mr Horn has started referring to himself as 'slow old guy', most likely as an excuse for his awkward adaptation to this wondrous new Proboards V5 thingy.
Mr Horn, I resent that. I'M an old guy. I have an excuse. Despite your occasional attempts to be old, as in your Tilley hats and your cranky attitude toward spirited teens, you're of no age, yet. You're professionally employed as a number cruncher of sorts, I believe, which means that you're probably staring at a computer screen for a good part of the day. You know what's going on in the cyber world.
I'm of a generation that gathered around the first computer in our office at the Press and named it 'Hal', after the 2001 monstrosity, because something that new just had to have a name. A computer! Wow!
I think you're a good ten years younger than me. Your age is no excuse. Don't try to 'horn' in on the rationale that those of us who are truly over the hill use to excuse our infacility with technology's advances.

You know what's going on in the cyber world. Good one, old chap. In my work in an accounting office (really, I'd rather be a lion tamer, but that's another story), I deal with software changes regularly, and I regularly deal with them quite poorly. So it was predictible to see my similar reaction to PB-V5, which no doubt was enhanced by all the emotional baggage that I carry from being an unwilling beta-tester at my office.

You'll have to excuse me, as I am always behind the times, but this is like a throwback to the time when my IP somehow was banned and I could only sometimes login from one computer using Firefox. Still trying to figure out this new probards, but does it have a particular grudge against Chrome, or is there some setting that is set wrong that I still haven't discovered?

Can someone enlighten me as to why type that I'd written before adding photos ended up between the photos?

V5 transition update:
- Well, approx 6 weeks after the upgrade, and I think I'm pretty happy with the end result. (haha, you already know how I feel about the first few weeks of the process).
But the end result is good; I'm liking it. Various early problems have been corrected, and I'm noting more missed-features now being added back into the software.
....such as the bottom of the home page, where it now shows us the users from the past 24-hours.
Maybe not perfect yet, but I see lots of improvements already made.

As of right now, all of the 1024 x 768 forum photos are displaying as 996 x 747.
- is it just me, or is anyone else seeing a narrower forum ?
ps: signature & flagship are still the correct sizes, but the various photo posts are all shrunk.

Everything looks good for me... all images and forum displaying at the proper width. What browser are you using? I use Firefox... I wonder if that makes a difference.
