Hello everyone,
I was just on the ferry last weekend to Bowen Island, and man, even though it's a short ride, you can still smell the diesel exhaust.
My name is Mandy and I'm a Masters of Science student at UBC. For my thesis, I'm interested in understanding the experience of workers who are exposed to diesel exhaust at their workplace: what do you think about the diesel exhaust and the health effects? What do you do to protect yourself from it? Do you have any recommendations to worksafeBC or other organizations to better address the exposure at your workplace?
The interview will only take around 30 minutes and can be done in person or over the phone. Your identity and your work location will stay anonymous, and the data collected will not be individually linked to any participants.
I am not doing this for profit, and I am not affiliated with any organization other than UBC.
I would really appreciate it if you guys from BCF (or other workplaces!) are willing to participate; I'm really interested to know what you think! The only requirements are that you're between 19-65 years old, are exposed to diesel exhaust on a regular basis at your workplace, and have worked for at least one year at your current position. If interested, please email me at dieselworkers@gmail.com, and I am also happy to answer any questions anyone might have on this thread.
Thank you in advance!

I have a few questions for you! My father used to spend quite a few years in the engine room, and has done a number of asbestos tests through UBC's medical screening program. It's also been 14 years since he was in the engine room full time. Is this new study separate from the asbestos study? Will it matter that he's been 14 years out from below the car deck? Thanks!

Heya, I work onboard the Spirit of British Columbia and the Coastal Renaissance, and have worked on an offshore anchor handling/tug and supply vessel. I can't say that I do much other than attempt to stay upwind of it, and on the car decks with the exhaust of semi's, I try and duck into stair towers while loading to get a some fresh air. Generally its the shore end fans are blowing air while the offshore end fans are sucking air, so if you're down at the offshore end you get a face full of dirty exhaust being pushed towards you by the shore end fans. I hate wearing half masks and seem to get sinus infections every time I use one. Age 31, been working on the ocean for 12 years commercially.
