So does anyone know the real reason WSF got rid of the metal gates on the front of the ferries like Jumbos, Supers, Issaquah classes? They took them of and went to chains, and now days they use nylon nets. I would just think the gates would easier and not need replacing near as often as the nets.

Will Vigor ever at the second auto deck Sealth is supposed to become the inter-island ferry when Tillikum is retired, so the likelihood of it getting a second auto deck is not very high. That and it also has the lowest Auto Deck Clearance: 15' 2" of the Class, and from my understanding, it was felt that adding the second deck, would be to tight feeling and they WSF didn't want it to be like the supers with needing more dwell time.

My biases might be showing here, but I wonder if really the underlying problem is that a marine transit system is trying to operate without public subsidy. I know, the Steamship Authority has been doing it for decades... but aren't corners being cut and maintenance deferred because there is the requirement that all costs have to be covered by fares, or by local taxpayers being billed, in the case of a deficit? I suppose an argument could be made that anyone wealthy enough to be living in Martha's Vineyard should be able to bear the full brunt of their transportation costs, but some might make the same judgement about Bowen Island, where the average income is above the British Columbia provincial average. Buses go everywhere, all over North America, into communities rich and poor. Somehow, with marine transit systems, we have a different mindset. I've never understood it. Neil, Not really the case here this is one boat that just had MLU done and the other main one with Problems is still new. If anything it is shoddy workmanship on the boats. www.flickr.com/photos/20978465@N04/41967968972/in/dateposted-public/www.flickr.com/photos/20978465@N04/41967969232/in/dateposted-public/www.flickr.com/photos/20978465@N04/41967969472/in/dateposted-public/www.flickr.com/photos/20978465@N04/28139627038/in/dateposted-public/www.flickr.com/photos/20978465@N04/28139627278/in/dateposted-public/

Why do they remove the nameboards off of retired ferries? Often it is because the boat gets scraped and they are taken as in some moments and others I remember seeing being used as a tables in EH in the past. I think Barnacle would give the best answer..

I captured Kittitas back in 1991 at Anacortes. I believe R30A may be correct in that Issaquah is the only vessel in that class to not ever see duty in the San Juans, or did she? I believe you are correct in that the Issaquah has never been to the SJI's. Courtesy of Barnacle, here's the Kittitas working inter-island yesterday. It was really strange Not having her in Clinton today. It's also a first for this run having 2 vessels of this size on it.

So what will be the fate of clippers I and IV? I could see IV going to San Francisco. As for Clipper I is there a chance of her being used somewhere else on the West Coast or is her career on the West Coast likely done? How could you see VC IV going to San Francisco bay when it can't be used there because of the Jones act??? It was built in 1993 Fjellstrand Yard in Norway...

While on the Tokitae today the ramp at Mukilteo was not working and Chelan was stuck for 20 mins. First was told, we are heading to Edmonds to be able to disembark. As we have changed from facing Everett and started to Edmonds, we are then told we have to Go back to Clinton as the crossing is being cancelled until further notice. I was on the phone with WSF and 2 people on the Senate Transportation Committee before we arrived in Clinton. We pulled into Clinton and they told the Deck hand at that time "radio your Capt your going back to Mukilteo!" I normally give everyone at WSF a HUGE thank you! for all their hard work and their many hours. However, today showed the worst case in judgement on anyone part for telling the passengers 3 different stories all over the PA system. Today showed a real lack in PR and over all emergence planning. Oh I forgot to ad here we had a Medical on-board in this crossing too.

It has been down right awful. on the Clinton Mukilteo run. We have had the Chelan however, then again the same Capt that shall remain nameless that has been just as slow with the Chelan as he always is with the Tok. Every trip we make he is right about 13 mins late, and it gets tiring..
Now with being down to one boat all day it has been a perfect storm. Avoid head to Whidbey at all cost!

in many of the years past one of the boats has had problems on 4th of July weekends and as such with so many making it a 4 day weekend. I am betting the at-least one boat will break down. as such when that has happened that boat often does it while on route. so it becomes a LONG trip and turns into the 4th of July cruise.

Most interesting things here to me: Suquamish indeed retires Hyak, while the Tillikum actually gets engine work and continues onward as the inter-island boat, replaced by the Sealth when in for maintenance. I wonder why they choose to keep the Tilikum over the Hyak. Hopefully they get more funding to built more Olympic Class to replace the Super Class. To me this says well yeah (duh), Hyak, and Klahowya, most likely become parts boats to support the other aging boats and buy a little more time since the State elected fools can't seem to play together.
