Storm Bandit is at Bear Cove awaiting better weather to continue to Alliford Bay. That would be a great photo!

Here's a postcard of Swartz Bay I found in a box this weekend. The time frame appears to be the latter half of the 1980's, certainly sometime after the fleet was re-painted in the Expo Livery. I'm interested in the lower left corner of this photo, where Seaspan has 2 berths (would have been CP at that time). I'm interested in this too, all the times that I've been through Swartz Bay over the years I never knew that there was 2 berths there at one time. Maybe the one on the left was the original berth and they just kept it for awhile after the newer berth was built? Great postcard overall too, this is the version of Swartz Bay I remember the most. Making monthly trips to visit family on Salt Spring Island from the mid-70's to 1990ish, I spent a lot of time there.

Nice photos of the Tachek. I also am from Victoria but I never seem to manage to catch any ferries that go into Point Hope I always miss seeing them leave or come in. She does look good though! Thanks Karl. I was running errands but when I'm out I always keep an eye on the AIS app on my phone, once I saw that Tachek was heading for the harbour I headed down there.

Is the New West still in Esquimalt Drydock? I couldn't see her there tonight. She's tied up just outside of the drydock now, they moved her out a couple days ago.

Tachek was out again today doing sea trials, this time with out any tug support. This photo was taken yesterday, tug Storm Rider (and Storm Breeze for awhile) sat off Esquimalt Lagoon the whole time waiting in case help was needed. When Tachek returned to Point Hope, Storm Rider followed along behind:

Bah, false alarm. Seaspan Raven was here to assist cruise ship Grand Pacific into the graving dock.

Seaspan Raven looks like she's on her way to Victoria as she's currently sailing through Haro Strait. I'm assuming to assist the Queen of New Westminster with sea trials as she just came out of dry dock. I'll try to get photos.

I don't know what it's like elsewhere, but in Victoria it depends on which shipyard is doing the work. Point Hope always uses Ledcor tugs (Storm Rider, Storm Bandit, etc.), Victoria Shipyards being a Washington Group company uses Seaspan tugs.

Guess I should've posted it here, Queen of Cowichan is at Swartz Bay in berth 3 after sailing from Esquimalt this afternoon.

That's an amazing photo! I remember at the time wondering if they would fix it or not.
As for the term "turns," this was always my understanding: it's when a set of power takes a train to a certain point, then returns to the place of origin. There may be more to it, but I think that's the basic meaning.

3 things: 1) Awesome photo 2) Some of us here can relate to the great-efforts made to capture a desired angle. I know of one ferry photographer who also used a rubber raft (purchased just for the occasion) to paddle out to shoot the ex Queen of Vancouver. 3) Your Vancouver Island rail photos are greatly appreciated. Thanks for posting them here, and please keep them coming. - Thanks for sharing your interests and results with us. Similar to you and your Vancouver Island urgency, I am making sure that I take plenty of footage of various soon-to-be-retired ships. Thanks for your comments! It's always fun when you have to do something extra to get a certain photo. One of my favourite local photographers is the late David Wilkie, some of the things he did to get a photo is legendary! A shot I've always wanted but couldn't think of how to get. So I bought a $20 rubber raft at WalMart and rowed across Green Lake to catch the southbound Parksville Turn crossing the wooden trestle there. This was July 17, 2013:

I guess I can contribute a few photos to this thread! With the threat of closure very real, I've been making a real effort to capture as much of the remaining E&N activity as I can. I regret in the past of not taking more photos of the CP era, of not taking ANY of the RailAmerica era (even though I lived right beside the line for 6 months!), none of the Pacific Wilderness trains. Luckily, I decided a year or so before VIA left the island that I should start taking photos of the RDC's, so I didn't miss out on that. On October 24 I caught a northbound Duncan Turn crossing Westholme Flats:

I picked up Robert Turner's "Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway 1949-2013" last weekend, it is the third book in a series. I've been waiting for this book for a long time as it covered my favourite era of the E&N, the diesel era. There are some amazing photos of things I had never seen before and a lot of great detailed maps. If you're a fan of the E&N or Canadian railroading this book is a must have.

Saw this on Twitter, don't have any details yet. On AIS you can see it at Village Bay north of the slip.

ps: does anyone have a guess or idea on where the cover photo is of? - My first thought was Stewart BC, but maybe it's Skagway ? The cover photo is of Alaska Steamship's Delta terminal, it's located south of Fraser Surrey Docks (look for Alaska Way on a map). The slip is still there but it's used by Seaspan as a tugboat tie-up, maintenance facility. That's a fantastic article, I printed it out a couple years ago for my files, hard to believe how much marine-rail activity there used to be.

I've wanted to get a photo of Seaspan Greg for the longest time but as it's currently a back-up vessel she spends most of her time moored at Tilbury awaiting the call. I missed my chance of getting a photo of Seaspan Doris in action so I vowed not to let that happen with Seaspan Greg. I've been keeping an eye on AIS to see when I'd get an opportunity and other than one late night trip to Nanaimo a month ago, she's stayed put. Sunday night Carrier Princess made a trip to one of the drydocks in North Vancouver and I knew I'd get a chance as Seaspan Greg was pressed back into service right away. She only made 2 daylight trips to Swartz Bay and I would've preferred the morning run for better light, but I was just happy to get a shot regardless. Carrier Princess left the drydock this morning and actually followed S.G. up the Fraser back to Tilbury where S.G. was tied up again and C.P. resumed her regular duties. Now I just need a photo of her in better light.....
