Well if u had it moored someplace it would be an ideal live aboard vessel...if u hook up to shore power/water etc like most marinas do have. Don't need to move it a lot really! You could even go one step further and decommission the running gear, turning it into a very nice houseboat. No, you wouldn't be able to take it anywhere, but it would still be a very cool, and perhaps a little quirky, place to live. Like you stated, you would need to moor it somewhere where you can tap into shore power, water, sewer, etc. it would be like a house at that point.

Corrosion? Seriously?! I can understand there being defects with a new ship, like with equipment, and maybe some other electrical or mechanical things, but the hull? Really? This just seems shocking to me, and really, a pretty big deal. Or is it? Am I missing something here?

I just looked at the latest maintenance schedule and it shows three Issaquah 130 Class vessels (Issaquah, Cathlamet and Kitsap) on the Vashon route beginning the week of 07/04. My gut feeling tells me this probably will change, but if it does it'll be (as far as I know) only the second time 3 Issaquah 130 Class vessels have been on the same route. In a few years, after the 4th Olympic is built and in the fleet, (3) Issaquah 130's may become a permanent thing at F-V-S. And, speaking of schedules, it should be noted the Central Sound routes are finally back to their normal vessel assignments - it's only been, what, 2 years? What I mean by that is Puyallup and Spokane are at Edmonds-Kingston, and Tacoma and Wenatchee are at Seattle-Bainbridge. It's been a long time since Puyallup's been at home on her normal route. And, that also means Walla Walla is back at Bremerton, at least for now.

Gonna be a tough one for us southerners... WSF hasn't flown a houseflag in decades. I can't recall ever seeing a picture of one on a Super, suggesting they were gone by the late 1960's. BC Ferries and Blackball (Coho) are the only local ferry operators I know of that fly company flags; don't know about AMHS. I was looking through my photos of east coast ferries from last year, and both NFL and New Brunswick Ferries fly Canadian and Provincial flags, but no company flag that I could see. I love the idea of flags on a ferry for a theme, but I think we're going to have a pretty limited number of submissions given the company flag criteria.

Here is a link to the vessel lay-up schedule for Fiscal Year 2015-2016, which ends June 30th. www.wsdot.wa.gov/Ferries/Business/Contracts/upcomingprojectsThey haven't posted next year's layup schedule yet, but it looks like almost all of the vessels will have their scheduled maintenance completed by the time the summer schedule starts in mid June. Tacoma is the only vessel listed as having work that spills over into the next fiscal year. She is currently scheduled to be out of service from June 9th thru July 3rd. The big caveat, as always, is which vessel will break down and need emergency repairs. Barring that, we should be OK this summer, vessel-wise, even with Evergreen gone. Then, if you could make a guess, which boats will be available as spaces in case of an issue? Depending on how WSF assigns the fleet for the summer schedule, there could be as many as 3 spare vessels, but that assumes no unexpected breakdowns, and minimal scheduled vessel maintenance during the summer season. We won't have that information until the FY 2016-2017 Layup schedule gets released. Now, here's the caveat to the above statements: we know from past experience that there is a good chance of a vessel breakdown somewhere along the line, and karma for such an event typically kicks in right around the 4th of July weekend, but I guess I am being a bit pessimistic here. We also know that vessel maintenance is a year-round activity because of yard schedules. They get the ferries in when there is a slot available, and sometimes that right in the middle of summer. So, not much of an answer for you, but such is the way of things when trying to predict future vessel deployments. Check back with me on the first day of the summer schedule - then I can give you an answer

I definitely agree that the Hiyu should've been retired instead of the Evergreen State. It is going to be crazy this summer since (I think) the only backup ferry is the Hiyu. The boats will all be assigned except for a few (correct me if I'm wrong).

Nova Star would be IDEAL for a Summer Vancouver/Seattle to Alaska service much like Sundance Cruises did with the Stardancer in the 80's caqrry cars and passengers. As a cruise type of ferry, it would be quite a nice ship to sail to Alaska on from either Seattle or Vancouver, but even on our coast, I think it would be difficult to regularly fill Nova Star's 336 vehicle spaces and 163 cabins. I think the owners of the vessel will have a better chance of leasing it out, or selling it, to a European operator, who can put it on a crossing where the vessel is a better match for the traffic levels.

In addition to Kevin's response to Roeco regarding Blackball possibly purchasing a used "Blue Canoe" from Alaska, it seems unlikely given the ages of the vessels that will be retired. Sure, they are a few years newer than Coho, but I rather doubt Blackball is in a financial position to acquire another vessel. And even though Coho is kept in pristine condition, there is no getting around the fact that she is 57 years old, and its going to get more and more expensive to maintain and upgrade Coho to keep her current with new safety regulations. I love the Coho. I think it's a great ship, and I will be sad to see her go, whenever that happens. I hope Blackball has a plan for Coho's eventual replacement. I would hate to see that service die.

Yet another airline is re-branding - seems to be a trend these days. This time it's Alaska Airlines, our hometown carrier. It's actually not bad, IMO. I've seen far worse lately. While I still like the current livery, I think this one will look good, too. When you click on the link, there's a feature which allows you to scroll through ALL of the Alaska Airlines liveries over the years. www.alaskaair.com/content/about-us/welcome-to-alaska/?

This isn't exactly "new" news, nor is it surprising, but Nova Star's demise is now officially on the company's home page. novastarcruises.com/I'm sad they could not get this to work, but the vessel really was too large for what was essentially a "start-up" type of service. It does make me even more glad that I got a chance to experience Nova Star last summer.

I think recycling would be a much better fate than that of Sidney, San Mateo, Willapa and Kalakala however. Is there anything from her that could be reused, maybe use some of her interior for Chinmacum? Such as? There's precious little interior to re-use, and the artwork (the most transferable part of it) is badly faded and in generally poor condition. Though I was always fond of the photo of the "tulips" in the Skagit Valley, which were daffodils... I hear some scuttlebutt that some gear may be transferred to other boats... I'm hoping a couple of pieces of furniture end up on mine. It'd be like transferring good boat karma. Memorabilia? Like the wheel and telegraph from Olympic displayed on Cathlamet? Or, maybe something like Klickitat's stool on the bridge of Salish I have no idea what Evergreen may have that would be useful as a historic artifact, but those types of items are the only thing I can think of that would be worth keeping, and/or transferring to another vessel.

Back from the media tour. It's impressive. I posted few tidbits on my FB page and our Denman Bulletin Boards (same text, different photos). Thanks for going out there. I, like most others on this Forum, am interested in hearing your perspective and impressions from the tour today - looking forward to reading your blog on it.

Have a look at the vessel layout, here. It looks to me as if the Government of Newfoundland & Labrador is doing a much better job of looking after the needs of those living in remote coastal areas then is our BC government here on Canada's west coast. Thanks for posting that. There are some good pics of the interior, too. Have a look here on Damen's page - next to the video link, there are some pictures you can scroll through: www.damen.com/en/news/2015/10/damen_ropax_ferry_mv_veteran_for_canadian_lifeline_vessel_replacement

I found a really cool video on YouTube of the arrival of Newfoundland's newest ferry, MV Veteran.
I've said it before, but I still can't help but think something similar to this vessel might be a good design for the future Northern Discovery.

BSC aside, I think it's cool that Washington State has 3 ferries that made the list. It's also nice to see the new Fogo Island ferry,MV Veteran, on the list. That looks like a nice vessel - still makes me wonder if a vessel based on that design would be a good template for a future Northern Discovery.

OK, thanks for the clarification on the vessel. Clearly, I totally misjudged that one. Guess I don't know my ferries too well, after all.
