How do you feel about them overall, now that you've gotten used to them? I get another trip on Wednesday, so I will keep my mind open and then report back after that trip. ---------- On my Sunday trip, not using the garage-deck took some of the fun away from me. They appear to only use the garage deck when necessary. It's not the default option when only one deck is needed.

I took a Salish-class ferry in inclement weather for the first time recently. It was a day of rain and snow on December 24th.
What became apparent to me is the lack of any covered outdoor passenger space, other than the Deck-3 main vehicle deck.
I like to be outside for the quiet, the personal space and the fresh air, and that's probably a common desire, not just a ferry-fan thing.
The Salish Class is lacking in any outside covered space. The Spaulding sisters and the Coastals had/have wonderful covered promenade decks. The C-Class have sundecks.
The main vehicle deck has only one window on either side, and no forward or aft views because of the visors. On a rainy day, it's a big disappointment.

Today's the first time I noticed that the existing Clippers are registered to Nassau. Seems pretty dodgy - I assume for tax dodging reasons? Hurray for responsible corporate citizenship. They travel between 2 countries, so the Jones Act doesn't apply to their origin or registration. It is pretty common-place to register a ship under a flag of convenience, but of course that's irrelevant to your point of it being dodgy. Clipper Navigation is owned by Förde Reederei Seetouristik (FRS) of Flensburg, Germany, and I'm not sure how taxes work for a German company operating in the USA & Canada.

I don't see a Clipper thread? Or is it the American sub-board? Anyways the new Canadian (albeit probably not for long) Clipper had arrived in Victoria at Ogden Point in the space just cleared by the newly arrived 'Sea Wolf. I moved you to the USA, Dane.

A sad day for rail on Monday, and a very sad day for rail fans and "Transporation-Nerds" everywhere. Two of the riders killed on Monday's Amtrak Cascades trip were rail fans, who were on that train specifically because it was the inaugural run on a new routing. That story hurts me, and likely hurts many of us here, because we all know that we've been in that situation before, where we purposely ride a train or bus or ship or plane when something new is available. Those two men were just like us. Same motivations, same source of joy, same sense of history, same appreciation for things-that-move. From the New York Times: from HERE

Thanks for sharing your collection of horns, which I presume is growing every time that you see/hear another ship.
What is your numbering system on your videos? Is that simply the 41st or 99th horn video that you've shot? Personal catalogue systems are great.
Next question: What is your favourite ship horn/whistle, and why?

In my mind the Bowen Queen replacement will replace the Howe Sound Queen. So we'll likely see the new vessels at Quadra, Vesuvius, and route 5 out of Swartz Bay. Quinitsa would remain a relief vessel Yes, Quinitsa on the Crofton-Vesuvius route seems like a short-term assignment for a few years when there are no other ships available.

Also, any thoughts on what will replace the Bowen/PRQ/Mayne Queens? The new minor class seem too small, and the Salish class seem too large. I don't recall having seen anything about this so far. Shuttle Class Thread Here

A new thread for the next, yet to be announced, round of BC Ferries vessel replacements.
The recent chart (presented at a 2017 ferry operators conference) lists the years 2022-2024 as the time to replace: - Queen of New Westminster - Queens of Cowichan & Coquitlam - Queen of Alberni
That's just 4 years away.
So this thread can be used for speculation and then reaction as newbuild process details eventually get announced.

It looks as if BCF is finally bringing back the early evening round trip on route 17 on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Definitely long overdue, but kudos to them for realizing they are having record traffic again, and not traffic declines. Definitely good news for both communities here. The wording of the media release for this is indicative of a new era both action and tone, regarding the communities:

Anybody who's a member of the facebook nautical heritage site, check out the photo of the Nimpkish off Rebecca Spit in heavy weather... quite something. The story behind it (noted on that Facebook page) is also interesting, how the trip was done just for that photo-op.
