The Ferry Commissioner also issues a quarterly report on customer complaints against BCFS, for the quarter. This one is for October-December 2012: www.bcferrycommission.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/FY13-Q3-Complaints-Resolution-Report.pdfIt's a well laid out report (sample of complaints, root cause, lessons learned, actions taken), that shows what is being done to respond to the various types of common complaints, and it might be informative re the things that are being done in response, and regarding explanations about things that are unable to be changed.

This morning, I've been reading through the just-released BCFS "Management's Discussion and Analysis" report, which accompanies its 3/31/2013 year end reporting.
A few things that interested me: ==========================
What does this mean? I think it means that for the new few years, the profitable routes will subsidize the unprofitable routes.
--------------------
The new 3/31/2014 deadline to determine the next stage of service cuts:
----------------------------------
Traffic decrease for the year was slight, but there was an increase of traffic in the January-March quarter.
-----------------------------

Many of you are wondering when the BCFS 1st-Quarter report will be released onto SEDAR. The answer is today... I dare you to click hereHere are my own highlighted excerpts of things that interested me, re the April-June 2013 MD&A (Management's Discussion and Analysis) report, which is an official public reporting document: ============================================== - Does anyone know what an "operational readiness exercise" entails? ---------------------- - This was the only part of the BCFS system to see traffic growth. ---------------------- - I can't think of any minor routes where capacity was reduced. Or maybe they are just saying that they are now using accurate and true capacity figures (ie. the Queen of Burnaby's normal capacity, vs. 192 ?) -------------------- - Did anyone even notice a "major overhaul or inspection" on the C-Cel ? ---------------------- - The comment about the Port McNeill work to allow for "All minor and intermediate vessels" to use it is interesting. I wonder if they'll do a better design than what happened at Hornby Island where Tenaka is unable to load properly. - The comment at the end about McLoughlin Bay makes me wonder what schedule changes are in place for the northern routes which would require ship tie-up at that location. ------------------------

We've all be eagerly anticipating the BCFS 3rd Quarter report. Here are my highlights of my favourite, the Management's Discussion and Analysis (MD&A) report. - from www.sedar.com. For Quarter ended 12/31/2013 - report released on February 20, 2014. ----------------------------------- An overview of some of the vessel upgrade projects: ----------------------------- An indication of upcoming major projects - ie. Queen of Oak Bay - this likely means the 1976 C-Twins will be on Route-2 for a longer period, likely next year. ie. Coquitlam replacing Oak Bay --------------------- A big upcoming project for Port McNeill, and comment on vessel interchangeability: ---------------------- Apparently there is growth in the drop-trailer business: ----------------------

BCFS released its reporting today, for their year-ended March 31, 2014. I read the same detail report that I do every quarter, which is the "Management's Discussion and Analysis" report. I didn't find any not-yet-discussed items or news items in that report. - There are lots of traffic statistics in the report. Find it on www.sedar.com, under "British Columbia Ferry Services" documents.

Here's BCFS' quarterly operations summary report, for October-December 2014. This is the report that shows traffic stats for each route. ie. # of trips, number of vehicles, number of passengers, on-time performance, etc. If you find the ferry operations interesting, then this is a good read that will give you some idea of how the various routes compare in their stats. (ps: the route names are listed on Page-3, in case you don't have them all memorized) HERE============ And H E R E is the report for trip cancellations, by route.

The weakened Canadian dollar may be giving BC Ferries a boost in their traffic counts. Tourism Vancouver says the number of American visitors is up by 8% this year, and some of those folks appear to be getting on ferries to Vancouver Island. Overall, BC Ferries vehicle traffic is up by 5.6%, with route one increasing 6.5%. This is beyond the range of a statistical blip. Some routes have improved considerably more; Texada is up 11.7, Sointula departures by 13, and Penelakut a whopping 18.7%. Route 30's figures have grown 9.25%, and my island, Hornby, has in some months increased as much as 15%, but is at 11% on an annual basis. Good news, unless you're waiting for a ferry on a busy day. Prince Rupert to Skidegate is up 16%.
No doubt the Clark government would react to these figures by claiming that their cuts in April of last year were purely a logical correction based on 'capacity utilization' and the need to 'keep fares low', and that the traffic increase vindicates their position. I would disagree, on two counts. One, the increase in tourism from south of the border, and secondly, on a point that admittedly is a bit harder to establish, namely, that the years of fare increases, and more recently, the service cuts, had driven usage to a point low enough that it was inevitably going to show a level of recovery based on population and the attractiveness of these communities to visitors... no matter what the political bent of the party running the ferry system.
The improvement could have been much more pronounced, but I imagine that many small communities will take what they can get.

The 2nd Quarter results are out. I haven't found anything about the Wack yet, but they list $212 000 in losses relating to "disposal and revaluation of property, plant and equipment, intangible assets and inventory."
Edit: Here's an interesting item. I think it confirms the sale of the Wack was indeed $100 000. "Proceeds from disposal of property, plant and equipment...$146 000 in the six months from April 1, 2015 to September 30, 2015." -That compares to $72 000 last year.

Yes, that is the relevant line item for sales price on any capital assets (ie. could be ships, trucks, old equipment, etc)

The financial statements mentioned that the Wack was decommissioned in fiscal 2015, and has been sold. No specific price, but the $146 000 figure is mentioned elsewhere in the report.
Berth 1 at Tsawwassen rebuild:
Also mentioned that they are CONSIDERING converting the Spirits to LNG. Doesn't sound like a done deal yet.
Keel laying dates for the Salish class: Vessels to be delivered in August 2016, November 2016, and February 2017. I'm guessing that they will enter service two months later (what a coincidence, the Burnaby's certificate expires on 10-31-2016).
