The NorAd made the crossing from Skidegate to Pr. Rupert in about 5 hours when I was on her a couple of weeks ago. The ship has, as is said above, good speed. Unfortunately this is offset to some extent by the longer loading time required.

Looks like the first day of service after refits the ferry is always late!
Sailing Delay (Operational) Posted April 25, 2007
Updated at 10:05 am
Please be advised the Queen of Capilano operating between Bowen Island and Horseshoe Bay is currently running 30 - 40 minutes behind schedule due to operational issues.
The vessel is not expected to make up time until the 2:35 pm sailing from Horseshoe Bay.
We would like to apologize for any inconvenience experienced as a result of this delay.
Queen of Capilano Returns to Service Posted April 25, 2007 BC Ferries is pleased to welcome the Queen of Capilano back to service on Wednesday, April 25th for the 5:35 am sailing from Snug Cove to Horseshoe Bay. The Dangerous Goods sailings will return to the regular schedule of 9:05 am from Horseshoe Bay and 4:05 pm from Snug Cove.
Significant in both scale and scope the Queen of Capilano refit involved the following work to ensure its continued safe, reliable and comfortable service:
· Service on the main engine · Installation of a new propulsion system with enhanced durability and spare units · Installation of a new propulsion control system · Maintenance to passenger washroom · Installation of new carpet in passenger lounge · Paint and coating renewals · Service to electrical and mechanical systems · Service to life saving equipment · Recertification of ship safety systems · Dry-docking and servicing of all underwater systems
The new propulsion control system requires careful tuning to reach maximum efficiency. This process will take several months and may occasionally cause increased of sailing times (duration) of 1 to 2 minutes. BC Ferries appreciates your patience while we carry out these adjustments to our systems.
BC Ferries would like to thank our passengers that were affected by this extended refit for their patience and understanding and look forward to providing you service in the upgraded Queen of Capilano.

I find this more troubling than the other difficulties that BCFS has had with vessels coming back after refit. They had the Cappie out tooling around between Horseshoe and Langdale for the last few days -- you would have thought that they would have shaken all the gremlins out of her during these sea-trials. Oh well. Soon they (BCFS) will learn that it is better to break it without paying passengers onboard during the shake-down trips than to wait until revenue service is impacted. Again, relative to my industry, I tend to "go hard" on my equipment when it is right out of the shop, JUST TO SEE if there is anything that didn't get 100% attention when it was being serviced. I'll redline my engine under load (or at least near redline) deliberately to see if something is loose or not adjusted right, run the brakes hard, etc! I'd rather break it 5 minutes out of the shop picking it up, than to be 600km outta town 2 hours from the nearest service and THEN have it break. Cannot count the times simple stuff broke on me within a day (most of this has now happened within 2 hours of coming out of service!). Hey BCFS -- did you get the hint?

operational does not necassarily mean mechanical with vessel. could have been issues with the ramp at snug cove or horseshoe bay. could have been not enough crew to start the day

Would that take into account the growing delays and two cancelled sailings? I think that there are mechanical issues at play, but the information provided by BCFS leaves us guessing at best.

The following was published by BCFS's as a News Release rather than a service bulletin. They appear to be putting the best spin possible on what has to be at the very least, serious teething problems.
For Immediate Release 07-029 April 27, 2007 MV NORTHERN ADVENTURE TO UNDERGO PRE-SUMMER REFIT Queen of Prince Rupert to Serve North from May 9 to 19 VICTORIA – In an effort to ensure that BC Ferries’ northern service is ready for the busy summer season, the MV Northern Adventure will undergo a refit from May 9 to 19 at the company’s Deas Pacific Marine facility in Richmond. The MV Northern Adventure has been experiencing some issues following its initial introduction to the BC Ferries’ fleet. BC Ferries wants to make sure these matters are fully addressed prior to the start of the busy summer season. The mid and north coast will be served by the Queen of Prince Rupert during this period. The Queen of Prince Rupert just completed a major five week refit and the vessel is now fully ready to return to service as the summer season approaches. On May 20, the MV Northern Adventure will join the Queen of Prince Rupert in providing service to the north. - 30 - Media Contact: BC Ferries, Media Relations Victoria: (250) 978-1267 Customer Contact: Victoria: (250) 386-3431 Toll-free: 1-888-BCFERRY (1-888-223-3779) British Columbia Ferry Services Inc., 1112 Fort Street, Victoria, BC V8V 4V2 Tel (250) 978-1267 Fax (250) 978-1119 www.bcferries.com/news/Note to newsrooms: For urgent media inquiries off-hours, call our emergency pager at (250) 389-8826.

Having the pleasure of regularly having lunch with one of the Capilano's captains, including one yesturday after his shift, I can tell you they're runing with caution because the ship, in terms of its mechanics, is effectively new. As they only had a short period of familarity they are running with caution as they develop a feal for the vessel's new configuration.

I was on the Capilano today and she looked nice, however there were some problems. The ships PA system worked but was totally unintelligable. Also, for a time the elevator didn't work (had to carry the stroller down the stairs:).

MV Mill Bay extended refit:
Mill Bay: Service Suspension Extended Posted May 08, 2007 Brentwood Bay - Mill Bay
Customers are advised that the temporary suspension of the Mill Bay ferry service has been extended until May 28th while the vessel continues to undergo an extensive refit.
Completion of this important refit is complex and is required once every four years to ensure the vessel’s continued safe operations. Significant in both scale and scope, the project has included considerable additional steel replacement to the hull of the vessel along with the following necessary work:
· Work on propellers, shafting and steering
· Inspection and maintenance of main engine and associated equipment
· Replacement of steel work as necessary
The Mill Bay is now expected to return to service on May 28th.
BC Ferries looks forward to returning the Mill Bay back to service following this scheduled refit.

This is a first I have never seen BC Ferries add extra sailings on route 30. It looks like the Vancouver will be helping out May 17 and May 18th. www.bcferries.com/schedules/notices/notice05110701.htmlIt looks like Friday May 18th the Vancouver will be doing her run on route 1 then doing a late night 11:20pm sailing from Duke Point to TSA and a 8:45pm sailing from TSA. Also a 4pm out of TSA on Thursday and 6:45pm sailing from Duke Point. This should be interesting!

there is no service notice for this but it is an FYI for anybody that is travelling to Saltspring Island on May 18th. all reservation space is booked on route 9 and i doubt standby traffic will get onboard. also if you are doing the thrufare option through swartz bay give yourself lots of time. i know from past experiance that the 5,7,9 pm sailings will be full. there is a major soccer tournament on saltspring on the long weekend as well as the around saltspring sailing race. so if the weather is like it is today then it will be insane. also if you are doing the thrufare as a foot passenger then you will have to get your boarding pass from the foot passenger toll booth at swartz bay before proceeding to the vessel

The 138 vehicle vessel, the Queen of Tsawwassen is scheduled to undergo essential repairs to the port main engine and will not be able to replace the slower 115 vehicle vessel, the Queen of Chilliwack for this holiday weekend. Sailing Delay - Operational Posted May 16, 2007
Updated at 11:00 am
Please be advised the Queen of Cowichan is operating 40 - 60 minutes behind schedule between Horseshoe Bay and Departure Bay due to an operational issue.
The vessel is expected to be behind schedule until further notice. An update will be provided later this afternoon.
We would like to apologize for any inconvenience experienced as a result of the delays today.
****************************************************************************
After having a look at the Actual Departures page, the Queen of Cowichan was having some mechanical difficulties, and wasn't able to leave Departure Bay until 11:15am, 45 mins after the scheduled 10:30am sailing. It's approximately 12:50pm, so she should have pulled into Horseshoe Bay by now. But she's still got about 20-25 mins to go until she even arrives, as she's just going by Cape Roger Curtis now. This makes her about an hour late. So she's obviously limping right now, and I wouldn't be suprised if she went in for some sort of repair, once the Oak Bay gets back.
Yup, it's going to be fun for anyone who's travelling on a ferry between the Mainland and the Island this weekend!

Sean.....do you really mean that?
Do you know who Mr. Miller is? Do you know what one of his former jobs was?
Do you understand that the Board hires and fires the CEO?
Do you still think it's a "stupid" announcement?
(ps: thanks for bringing this item to the forum's attention)
