B.C. Ferries to probe cause of ferry moving away from dock while loading Times Colonist Published: Friday, July 27, 2007
B.C. Ferries will conduct an internal investigation into what caused the Queen of Capilano to move away from the Horseshoe Bay dock while loading earlier this month. The ferry, which was on the Bowen Island run July 7, was loading when the Queen of Oak Bay came into an adjacent berth, said B.C. Ferries spokeswoman Deborah Marshall.
"The Queen of Capilano moved slightly off-centre and the overhead walkway lost contact with the dock," she said.
There were employees at either end of the walkway and passengers were held back as soon as the ship started to move, Marshall said.
"The walkway dropped about one or two inches. It was such a slight motion it didn't affect the vehicle ramp," she said.
B.C. Ferry and Marine Workers' Union vice-president Richard Goode said it usually takes a couple of weeks to get employees and the company together for an incident investigation.
"It looks as if there was no damage to the environment, the vessel or humans," he said.
In January, B.C. Ferries' MV Quinsam, bound for Gabriola Island, left the dock at Nanaimo with a pickup truck and driver on the loading ramp. The driver escaped, but the truck was dumped in the water.
