I think this is probably our fault. All of discussion recently of "ahem" issues south of the border, bilges, scopes and enemas must have given Oaky ideas. She must be feeling left out with the new Coastals, the retirements of the V's, and now the spook stealing the headlines. That must be the down and dirty of it all. Either that or someone just tired to flush a disposable diaper.

I hear tell that there are sewage plant ISSUES (emphasis intended!) on SEVERAL vessels. QoOB was one that was identified to me, as is another of her sisters. Both Spirits (one in particular, you know WHO you are!) and the QoNW.

I just noticed that the Queen of Cowichan has been running in the Queen of Oak bay's place all day today, even for the 620am sailing from Horseshoe bay. The Oak Bay is currently docked at Berth 1 at Departure Bay getting her 'stink' fixed. The Oak Bay is listed as the 935pm sailing tonight in order to get 'er back to home port. I wonder if the Cowichan sailed the 935pm last night or if it was a double deadhead mission in the middle of the night.

From the BC Ferries News Releases page: BC FERRIES’ COASTAL RENAISSANCE TO BE OUTFITTED WITH ADDITIONAL ENGINE SILENCERVICTORIA – BC Ferries’ Coastal Renaissance, which operates on the Departure Bay – Horseshoe Bay route, will be removed from service from Monday, September 22 through Thursday, September 25 to allow for the installation of an additional engine silencer. During this time, the Queen of Cowichan will sail in place of the Coastal Renaissance. There will be no change to the schedule on the Departure Bay – Horseshoe Bay route over the four days. The Coastal Renaissance will return to service on Friday, September 26. BC Ferries is installing the additional engine silencer to further mitigate noise and vibration while docking. A similar device was installed on the Coastal Celebration as a trial last month, which had greatly reduced the sound emanating from the engines. The Coastal Inspiration will also be fitted with an additional engine silencer at a later date.

The queen of oak bay is leaving berth 1 dept bay? Why. She has been at berth one for the last few days due to an issue with the sewage system onboard. She has now been fixed...

Why would the sannich ever have better time then a spirit. Leaving aside the obvious sarcasm about ship health and happiness ...the repairs done to the SoBC were not complete and the ship is not able to operate at full service speed because of this.

why don't they hurry up and get the CC into service and then move the SoVI to Tsawwassen and pull the SoBC for a while (more than 1 week 3 times)

the CC won't be finished crew training until roughly the 10th of Oct i believe. Thats why.
The SOBC is on her way to getting fixed, but they are doing lots of work while on the run. Parts of her busted engine are at Deas. They need to completely replace the head of one of the engines, a job that could cost easily a million bucks!

They need to completely replace the head of one of the engines, a job that could cost easily a million bucks! I assumed that they were trying to play the "hot-fix" game. I don't really see how this serves any advantage though, as they need to be paying a higher wage rate to be doing that, and the reliability of maintaining schedule drops drastically; it is not like trying to replace a few light bulbs or ballasts while under way. Can you confirm that it is JUST the head of one engine, or did they bugger the shaft and gearing too? Not saying that a top-end is a cheap thing to do, but I wonder how bad the damage REALLY is. I have a sneaking suspicion that there are more problems with the plant than BCFS is letting on.

SoVI woes on her FIRST trip ... 2.5 hours into her 0700 sailing and she has not made Tsawwassen yet ... Service Notice - Sailing Delay - Swartz Bay / Tsawwassen Posted Sunday, September 28, 2008 Updated at 8:09 am Please be advised the Spirit of Vancouver Island's 7:00 am sailing will be approximately 40 (forty) minutes late arriving in Tsawwassen. For updated sailing information please check our Current Conditions page or call toll free 1-888-BC FERRY (223-3779). We apologize for any inconvenience experienced as a result of this delay. www.bcferries.com/bcfservicenotice?id=63961So, her 0659 departure has not bumped dock as of 0933. She must have gone the SOUTHERN route (for what reason?). No news articles on any of the usual suspects about "BCFerries vessel aids in marine emergency" or anything of the like. Perhaps someone is using parts out of the SoVI's engine room to try to get the SoBC running. Either that or they are "saving money" by running BOTH of them on only 3 engines .... ??

Umm, Whats up doc?
It is now 6;15pm on Oct 01 and the Quinsam is still in service and the Service notice regarding her refitt has been removed. Weird, BC Ferries have not a clue of what the heck is going on. I was monitoring Victoria Traffic untill Midnite last nite and was suprised to hear the Quinsam Checking out at her normal time.
Whats up with the Bowen Queen?

Sailings to be added for the Olympics are listed here. Talk about advance notice! www.bcferries.com/bcferries/faces/attachments?id=649516am and Midnight sailings. I would hope they will be on full summer schedule for busy periods even though it will be midwinter. Although looking at the prices of tickets, if you can afford that you can afford direct Whistler helicopter or float plane service, not to mention an overnight hotel .

Sailings to be added for the Olympics are listed here. 6am and Midnight sailings. I would hope they will be on full summer schedule for busy periods even though it will be midwinter. A couple of issues come to mind re Extra-Sailings for the Olympics: 1) Where are they going to find the extra employees to staff these extra sailings? If they intend to do a mass-hire of a large # of casuals for a 4 week period during in the University spring-semester, will they find enough workers? 2) If they intend to staff the extra sailings with regular staff doing overtime, if BCFS effectively telling its employees that BC Ferries employees will be unable to attend any (or few) Olympic events themselves (because they'll be too busy working overtime, so no free time to enjoy the Olympics for themselves)?

Looks like it will be OT to me. For the 6am sailings on route 1 and the midnight sailings they can just bring the crews in early and have them stay late.

For the 6am sailings on route 1 and the midnight sailings they can just bring the crews in early and have them stay late. re Route 1 6:00am. - Since the regular crew will staff the 7:00am sailing, I'm assuming that an additional crew would be needed for the 6:00am sailing. I'm not sure if the Swartz-based Route-1 employees have 2 complete crews on-hand during February normally. ie. does a #2 ship run Route-1 during January-March normally? Or just on special long-weekends?

My speculation as to the advance notice is because they are actively working something out with the union regarding the scheduling issues (both OT, rotation and casuals) that will be required to staff the additional service.

It would effect ticket sales I would think if people knew what the ferry schedule was. It maybe part of their sponsorship as well to encourage the local sales of tickets. I don't know if they have done any allocation of tickets regionally so that people from certain areas get a crack at attending.

FWIW, if I am reading this correctly, on Rte-1 there will only be the additional ONE round trip sailing (0600 SWB-Tsa & 0000 Tsa-SWB). That's not really a huge increase, but, as Hahn presented it, a means for people to "get there" and "get home" the same day. Same holds true on Rte-2 and -3 from the above referenced release.
