re NorAd: What if the oil-shutdown had happened 1/2 way through Queen Charlotte Sound? I think they got lucky, having the engine-shutdown occurring so near to McLoughlin Bay. It does not make any sense. Does the NA not have 2 engines? dont both those engines have a seperate oil resivour(Sp?) for pulling oil? would that not mean that one engine is still operational?

No, the oil recirculating system goes through centrifuges to "clean" the oil by spinning it at high RPM to force the little bits of metal to the outside where it is siphoned off. The rest of the oil is recirculated back into the engines. If I recall correctly there is only 1 bank of centrifuges that feeds both engines.
Also, what would be the point of running on one engine? She would only be able to make about 12 knots, so it would almost be faster to wait for fresh oil, not to mention it would be safer. Also, I think they might need to have a certain power capability just because the tides through the inside passage there can be pretty wicked.

This isn't really a service issue...more of a quiet equivalent vessel replacement made this afternoon.
The Queen of Vancouver has sailed in place of the Queen of Esquimalt for the 3:50pm sailing from Tsawwassen, and 6:30pm sailing from Duke Point. No word yet if the Vancouver will make the final round trip of the day.
I guess the poor old Eskie has been limping lately.

The little Nimpkish, coming to the rescue of the Northern Adventure. Sounds like something 'ferrygirl', Nicola Bolton, might have come up with. And how about that passenger complement? How often is the NorAd sailing around with only 56 people on board?

The SOBC is stuck at Swartz Bay right now due to weather as they suspended sailings but the SOVI is on route now to Swartz Bay on her last sailing.

The SOBC is headed home now. The Queen of Vancouver cancelled her last sailing. Also noticed on SiiTech that the Princess Superior was headed north in the passage between Galiano Island and Saltspring Island... I suppose to avoid Georgia Strait at storm time?

11:50 sailing of the Queen of Vancouver from Duke Point is cancelled due to weather... The 9:10 from Tsawwassen was cancelled as well. But let's say they did the 9:10, and then got caught by the weather and cancelled the 11:50 return, without any expectation of making it back for several hours. Would the Tsawwassen based crew, which started on the 3:50 that afternoon, be expected to stay awake all night in waiting for the return trip? Would they be taken off and accommodated somewhere? I know BC Ferries virtually always cancels return trips, but sometime it must have happened that they've had to cancel a shift end return sailing.

I wonder if Esquimalt was replaced by Vancouver because Esquimalt has some damage to the port side of her hull at the midsection of the ship and they didn't want to take chances in rough seas. I'm not sure what the correct term is but I noticed when I was on her last Saturday that part of the hull that extends out and acts like a bumper was quite damaged where the steel had buckled and torn apart. Probably from hard docking and bashing into a dolphin. I wish I took picture but has anyone else noticed it?

No press release, but the Nanaimo is creeping across the strait right now. Anyone know why she is on a midnight stroll towards the gulf islands when ever other ship is safely in berth?

No press release, but the Nanaimo is creeping across the strait right now. Anyone know why she is on a midnight stroll towards the gulf islands when ever other ship is safely in berth? Her regular scheduled sailing is leaving tsawwassen at 10:25pm with arrival at long harbour at 11:50pm. if she was delayed earlier in the evening by weather then that is the reason for being late. slow speed may be because of the wind.

....part of the hull that extends out and acts like a bumper was quite damaged where the steel had buckled and torn apart. That part of the hull is called the "Rubbing Strake". ************************************************* Another K-Class is having troubles. I wish they had 4 RADs instead of 2, because they're officially a barge once one of them breaksdown... Sailing Delay Posted January 05, 2008 Updated at 9:30 amPlease be advised that the MV Kuper is operating service with the assistance of a tug. The vessel is anticipated to be behind schedule for the remainder of the day.
For updated information please feel free to call toll free 1-888-BC FERRY (1-888-223-3779).
We apologize for any inconvenience experienced as a result of this delay.

I noticed that, while out of service, the SoBC has remained in berth 5 and the SoVI has been using berth 3. Hopefully this is only temporary, or else they may have both S vessels out at the same time, starting Monday. No notice yet, so it should be back in action at 7am tomorrow I figure.

I think you're right Coxnnick, SOBC is having bow thruster issues. Whenever the winds or tides are strong she seems to sit out for the rest of the day. Let's hope this gets addressed in her refit in Feb.

She has been having bow thruster issues since summer, and she still has yet to be repaired until refit. Thankfully it is upon us.

Also noticed on SiiTech that the Princess Superior was headed north in the passage between Galiano Island and Saltspring Island... That would be the Trincomali Channel.

A deckhand told me that the Queen of Vancouver was replacing the SOBC so that engineers could replace some defective sprinkler heads on the fire system on the main car deck.

The Queen of Vancouver according to RBI is replacing the Esquimalt till Wednesday. It better not be any longer as she is needed on route 1 on Friday.

Yes, those windy days in the summer cancelled a few of the SOBC sailings and even then we knew there would be winter days where the ship would not sail. Could this not have been fixed earlier? In fairness, would this maintenance take several days? If so, I can understand why BCF would wait until it came in for refit.

Maybe the Queen of Vancouver should stay on route 30 and have the Esquimalt do route 1 extra sailings. I dont think she can handle running around 20 hours a day.

Sailing Delay - Weather - Update Posted January 07, 2008 Updated at 2:15 pm, January 8
Please be advised that the Northern Adventure continues to hold in Prince Rupert due to adverse weather conditions.
The next update will be provided at 4:00 pm.
The time keeps rolling along for the Inside Passage stops without ferry service. The NorAd still needs to do one more run over to the Charlottes before running the Inside Passage down to Port Hardy, or will they cancel the Skidegate round trip since it did it yesterday?
