Here's a circumstance that you don't see very often up at Routes 21 & 22: ____________________________________________________ Service Notices - Denman Island-Hornby Island
Sailings Resume Posted March 24, 2008Updated as of 3:20 pm Due to an operational issue, the ramp at Gravelly Bay (Denman Island East) is temporarily out of service. Ferry traffic is current being routed directly between Buckley Bay and Shingle Spit (Hornby Island) until further notice. For current sailing information, please call 1-888-BC FERRY (1-888-223-3779). We apologize for any inconvenience experienced as a result of this temporary change in service. ___________________________________________________ Now I wonder if the Tachek will be the only ferry doing the Buckley-Hornby run, or if they will add the Klitsa to accompany the Tachek and do this longer run as well, now that they have 3 ferries up in that area. The Buckley Bay terminal will be getting overworked. It's tight enough shoehorning 2 ferries on the Denman run, and now we have a third! If Siitech still worked north of Nanaimo we would be able to know what's actually happening. now they are sending the Tachek around to the other side of Denman Island starting tomorrow Service Notices - Denman Island-Hornby Island Modified Schedule – March 25 Posted March 24, 2008 Due to emergency dock repairs required at Gravelly Bay (Denman East), the following modified schedule will be in effect on Tuesday March 25 only, between Hornby Island (Shingle Spit) and Denman West. The estimated crossing time between these destinations is one hour and ten minutes. Depart Hornby (Shingle Spit) Depart Denman West 07:30 am 08:45 am 10:00 am 11:15 am 12:30 pm 01:45 pm 03:00 pm 04:15 pm 05:30 pm 06:45 pm BC Ferries thanks our customers for their patience while this necessary work is completed. For further schedule information visit www.bcferries.com or call FYI I don't think any K-class ships can opperate between Denman and Hornby in the winter to bad the Nimpkish wasn't down south right now

ARRGGH! I wish I was up there for this. I don't recall this ever happening before. But why they're going from Hornby to Denman West I can't imagine- it's the same distance to go to Buckley Bay. A 70 minute cruise around the south end of Denman. Remarkable.

I feel your pain, Neil. I'm off this week so I tried to figure a way of catching such a rarity and enjoyable sailing but because I only just realized I had no chance... For once let's hope for dock repairs to go long eh?

Actual something like this happen before. When they drop a load logging truck in the water at Denman West both ships were going around Denman Island. I think the time this was late 70's or early 80's. It was Kahloke and Quinitsa doing the trip. This was before my time in BC.

I don't think they can load the ship till all of the crew is on the boat They had to unload the traffic that they loaded - news reports, and the news release both said so. I talked to a driver that had to back his semi off (which answers my previous question!). I think they can load undermanned, but not sail. It is my understanding that they did try to get fill in crew for the sailing but were unable to do so in a timely fashion. Metro had an article today that read that the missing crewmember got ill overnight and called in sick, but a replacement was not to be found. This begs the question of: when did BCFS know that the crewmember was sick Is there someone answering these 'emergency' calls 24/7, or is it an answering machine? If a live person got a call at say 4:30, then finding someone within :45 for the sailing, or even 1:15 for a late sailing SHOULD have been do-able!! Steal someone from the 0630 sailing out of Departure Bay .... (assuming you only need a licensed body on board to satisfy TC regs....)

There is a tie up beside the berth but I don't believe the larger ferries can use it. It is mostly for bunker boats or barges for fuel I think. Most often you see one of the ferries holding off and waiting for the other to leave. This only happens as in the case when one is coming back from refit or one or the other is late. When the NorAd was pretty new someone from the forum rode her and had a video and/or pics of the ferries doing just that in Prince Rupert. I am actually surprized they don't double Prince Rupert. In summer when both ferries are running there are times when one has to wait for the other when one is off schedule.

Now I stand corrected. Although my previous post shows the NorAd heading outward, the current vessel positions show that the QPR is actually doing the scheduled run! The NorAd is presently In Port at Bear Cove. This vessel switch seems to be earlier than expected when you look at the schedule.

For some reason this is all intrigues me. . .the NorAd is currently heading west from Bella Coola! Does anybody know why this may be the case???

The Oak Bay I think is in refit. I remember seeing on the RBI the Coquitlam was running in place of the Oak Bay. They dont need a service notice as their is no decrese in capacity.

according to SIITech, the Queen of Oak Bay seems to be in drydock in North Vancouver. So she must be in for refit.

Interesting. . .I thought they always posted a service notice for any Temporary Replacement Vessel, regardless of whether there are changes in capacity or trip duration. Obviously not, as RBI shows the Coquitlam on the run for at least the next month! I would think that with a slightly smaller passenger lounge the Coquitlam would have a slightly smaller passenger & crew capacity. Obviously that's not the case.

I note that a Service Notice was issued when the Coq replaced the Surrey on route 3 six weeks ago. So why not one now when the Coq replaces the Surrey's twin sister, the Oakie? Is it because the folks on the Sunshine Coast are more picky about their ferries?

Yeah, Route 3 customers throw a fit when the anything but the Queen of Surrey is running on their route, even if it's a small change such as the Coq.

Yeah, Route 3 customers throw a fit when the anything but the Queen of Surrey is running on their route, even if it's a small change such as the Coq. You got that right! Here on Fort Street, we have received emails from Sunshine Coast residents that they DO NOT want any coastal vessels on the route. Even when the Surrey had its fire episode, people were complaining that the fix up was taking too long.

What is behind their Queen of Surrey paranoia? I mean seriously, I thought we were geeks for keeping certain ships. However, what makes the Surrey so great?

Post by Nickfro on Apr 1, 2008 21:22:24 GMT -8
It's not what makes the Surrey so great, but rather it's the people that travel regularly on her. The people on the coast get attached to things that are a serious part of their lives, and don't really want things to change on them unless absolutely necessary (and even at that it's not easy to adjust!). Take it for what you want. I don't see the necessary uproar over a change in ferries on the run. However, it's a good idea for BC Ferries to listen to the route's primary users about what they prefer, especially when the differences between the Surrey and its possible replacements are minimal.
I recall more depth into this topic being discussed in another thread about a month or two ago, but can't seem to find which one it's in right now.

Service Notices - Inside Passage Fall/Winter/Spring Shared Terminal Facilities - Prince RupertPosted April 09, 2008 Effectively immediately, BC Ferries will be sharing its Prince Rupert terminal and docking facilities with the Alaska Marine Highway Service while the Alaska Marine Highway dock facilities undergo emergency repairs, In order to comply with Canada and U.S. Customs and Immigration regulations, BC Ferries is required to establish a secure perimeter around certain portions of the terminal while the Alaska Marine Highway’s passengers and traffic load and disembark the vessel. During that time, customers of BC Ferries (on foot and in vehicles) will only be permitted in designated areas to maintain the integrity of the unloading process. Passengers who enter this secured area during loading will be subject to search and seizure under Canadian Customs and Immigration law. A number of security precautions, including additional staff and physical barriers, will be put in place to minimize confusion to passengers of both services. Additionally, BC Ferries’ terminal staff will be on hand to answer questions and give direction to our customers who intend to visit the terminal at these times. BC Ferries thanks customers its customers for their patience and understanding during this time. For additional information, please visit www.bcferries.com or call 1-888-BCFERRY (223-3779). ___________________________________________________ Too bad we don't have another company to share a Skidegate berth when BCFS commences their dock work to accommodate the NorEx! Do we have to also perform the NorEx work at Prince Rupert? Perhaps this will be a sharing agreement when (or if) our PR berth work commences, albeit that this current work is an emergency repair situation.
