You wouldn't happen to be interested in doing the False Creek Ferry "Spirit of Nora O'Grady", would you? Personally, I think the shark teeth suit her... Fenk, ADA approved

The story as I heard it from a former Anderson Islander is that the man who bought it and brought it around intended for the Ocean City to be used as a replacement for the Steilacoom. The project got mired in politics and it never came about.

After reading that article and a few google searches later, I think I have id'd her. I originally thought she was the Chester, or the Bridgeport, but now I'm pretty sure she is the Lackawanna from the Chester-Bridgeport ferry service. The Lackawanna was a converted railroad ferry bought by the service in 1949. See this website for some photos and history. I haven't made the link between the name changes, but seeing as there are two Ocean Cities within a short distance of where she was bought, I think a leap of faith is in order. I think the reference to being bought by Virginia in 1950 is in error; she doesn't match any of the ships I've been able to find that were in the Virginia fleets, though the Bridgeport was sold to the Jamestown ferry service in 1974. This might explain the mix up. Besides, I think this image is pretty clear: I drive over the bridge (Commodore Barry) that replaced this service probably twice a week, so thank you for making me get a history lesson! www.oldchesterpa.com/chester_bridgeport_ferry_folger.htmwww.oldchesterpa.com/chester_bridgeport_ferry_pics.htmwww.oldchesterpa.com/chester_bridgeport_ferry_aerial.htm

Wow... seems like ferry fanatics are not limited to this forum, given the thorough documentation about this particular ferry, with a web page hosting multiple pages and photographic histories. Another link shows her current state on the beach... kind of sad, really. static.panoramio.com/photos/original/10664586.jpg

Thank you all of rall the info about the Ocean City. From some of the info and links, I was able to get a pretty good idea of what she looked like when she first started. 11,516

And what a ghastly color scheme! Nearly as bad as the old Key System ferry orange. I really should post a photo of the Peralta's sister, Yerba Buena in that original livery if I haven't--talk about burning your retinas!
