Ok well this one will more then likely be the last one for awhile as this next few weeks are going to be busy for me. Hope you all like it. I would like to encourage others to start doing some drawings and lets see just how many ferry boats we can get on here. ;D Whidbeyislandguy, I have to say that I'm really enjoying your work. Thanks for sharing! This one is from a while back, but you might recognize her: Fenk, technologically challenged

Wow, the updated FastCat is actually fairly boring in the new livery. If these boats were still in active use with the new look, I wonder if they could have kept the "Cat" images on the sides, or would they have scrubbed that graphic, as your drawing shows? We will, of course, never know, but I thought the "Cat" graphic was kind of cool. In any case, thanks for doing the drawing!

Well here is another one with one of the cat on it. I know it's not perfect but it's close. BC Ferries frowns on its logo being stretched. They say you can only size it proportionally.

Well it was not stretched or changed. it was moved and has a watermark that may cause it you look as such. Looks stretched to me. [redacted]You appear to be using an aspect ratio of 10. The correct aspect ratio is approximately 7.46.

All I can say from seeing the Fastcats like that is that I'm glad we didn't see the Fastcats Make the Shift to the Wave. Some Fine Work Otherwise. Would like to see more of the "If they Were in this Colour Scheme" Maybe a Coastal Class in the Pastel Blue or the Expo Scheme.

Neat drawing... and after living just up the hill from that little tub toy for five years, I've still never been over to Guemes Island. *blush*

What about some drawings the old Queen of the Islands? One as she appeared between 1963-1977, (Extra points if you also have one drawing of her with yellow funnel that she had while dried leased to the BC Department Highways for the Comox-Powell River route in the summer of 1971.). Another as she appeared between 1978-1984. Another as she appeared between 1985-1987 when she was retired. And one "What if" drawing of her in service with BC Ferries today. Be seeing you. I would but with all the Privet Messages I have gotten from others about the BC ferries I am no longer posting any BC ferry drawings. I have also removed all drawings of BC ferries at this time. Sorry to hear that. Still I like the ships of WSF system as well, so keep posting. Cosmic Ray

As someone who hasn't sent you a private-message, would you like to explain the "alleged problem" that others are having with your drawings? What's your response (other than the above)?

Oh! I hope forum members haven't been taking you to task for a load of minor details about the BC Ferries you were drawing. I don't think your intent was to draw draftsman's drawings with down to the bolt accuracy. Sometimes passion for something takes over people's perspectives and relationships can suffer.
I for one appreciated the efforts even though I didn't say so. Especially the Cat drawings. It is your decision whether you continue or not, but if not it is too bad I was enjoying your work.

BC Ferries frowns on its logo being stretched. They say you can only size it proportionally. I am surprised that the matter quoted above was even brought up. From a marketing aspect I could see why BC Ferries wouldn't want their logo stretched. However, since these drawings are simply that, just drawings then it is pointless to even bring this to our attention! If the drawings where going to be sold or marketed to BC Ferries then the logo would need to be sized correctly. I for one enjoyed all the drawings that were posted and would like to see more BC Ferries drawings but as they say it only takes one person to ruin a good thing.

There has to some artistic license involved in any artwork whether computer generated or hand drawn. Warhol did the Campbell Soup cans and I am not sure how accurate or stylized they were. The drawings were so famous it had to not only increase the brand recognition but also helped lend iconic status to them.

As the person who likely did this damage. I would like to say that I am sorry for what I did. My hope is that some day the drawings of the BC ferries will return to this site. All the best. Ahh so BC Ferries are taking notice of us. Well I guess that isn't so bad then a small disclaimer and all is fine. Hmm maybe they hire you to do outlines of the ferries on the fleet page so they are done more correctly . And if they go put them back in alphabetical order ;D.

If BCF sent me a high-resolution image of a side view of the CR, I could easily trace it out in Inkscape and send the resulting outline back to them.

I received an email from BCF stating that I was doing “unauthorized reproductions” of their ferries that they all need to be removed until I have a “disclaimer added” to them. so the drawings will be back up shortly but with "Disclaimer: This is an artistic drawing it is not meant as an authorized reproduction." added to them. Is the management at BCFS's really so picky? If true this is pathetic indeed. I think that an ambitious MLU is in order for the management staff on the QoFS. BTW, whidbeyislandguy, your work is excellent. Give us more, including BCF. If the corporate spin doctors don't like you reproducing the wave slugs then give us pastel blue. How about a 'what if' of a Spirit vessel in dogwood - pastel blue?

So are you saying that someone on the forum complained to BC Ferries that you were doing reproductions of BCFS ships?
Would this complainer be the same person who was fussing over the stretching of the BC Ferries logo?
just curious.....

whidbeyislandguy: I like that last one you did of Elwha in the rainbow colours with green railings, and green roofs on the pilot houses. I wonder when they started painting the railings green? All the photos I have seen up through the late 80's to early 90's still show white railings - well, white screens with green top rails.

Hey, Elwha looks pretty good with bow doors! You could probably extend the railings all the way out to the front since I'm assuming the front areas would be roofed over to make that enclosed car deck. That would be a great outside passenger deck area!

Some nice work once again. That sort of answers what a WSF Ferry would look like with a bow door.

You know, she doesn't look bad from that approach. I'm having a little trouble visualizing what the view from the pilothouse would look like--I can't imagine what it's like trying to dock a boat where you couldn't see the bow. Especially the Elwha, which is such a heavy slug.
Oh! WSF's color scheme change: the white mesh on the railings changed to green in 1996 or so when the Dept. of Transportation "rainbow stripe" started phasing out. The pilothouse roofs were already largely green (most notable exceptions were the Jumbos and I think the Issies, which were white). Apparently the removal of the orange and blue was a cost-saving and labor-saving measure. The aesthetic improvement was just a bonus. The only boats that looked "right" with it were the Issaquahs and I've gotten used to them sporting the old TBA colors (and as a traditionalist I'm delighted).

WOW! BCF is REALLY up tight about the logo use. I guess they have one message: Dont screw with the logo
I cannot believe how specific the 'misuse' page is!
Good thing WSF does not care as much.
The drawings are looking great! The Elwha doesnt look too bad in BCF colors. It is kinda funny that WSF ever switched to the "rainbow" colors. Having white paint on railings that constantly get rubbed up against was a bad idea. With the green, it is harder to tell where the paint is being damaged.
