The photo showed the stern of the ship with water about 1/4 way up to the main passenger deck...

Does anyone know if there were any pets on board?
This is fairly trivial, considering the potential loss of human life -- but we now know that all humans were saved; thanks to Hartley Bay fishermen, CG Wilfrid Laurier and the efficient action of BCFS crew members.
I do hope there was not a dog locked in a vehicle when Queen Of The North went down. The light passenger load makes this unlikely, unlike a summer trip with a full load.
I'm sorry to lose this lovely ship. Yes, she was "elderly" (1969), but well-maintained and perfectly sound.
There's a little confusion over the term "single compartment". If I understand it correctly, this refers to an unobstructed car deck.
Herald Of Free Enterprise and MV Estonia both sank due to an ingress of seawater destabilizing those ships, sloshing over a large car deck. This was not a factor in Q North's sinking.

The single compartment means the engine room and void spaces are not closed off into two or more watertight spaces.

no. i think she may have gone down in the rear, and just like the sydney, only had a pnumatic ram holding it shut, therefore causing the aft gates to swing open and allow water in, which would cause her stern to go down first, and her bow to rise up, which would mean that she sunk stern first into the water. what i can't get at. is she struck a rock...okay i under stnad that. but how does she then end up in over 185meters of water?

Just saw the pic on CH. Very freaky. Very Titanic-ish with the lights on and all.
Safe to say it will never sail again but I wouldn't be surprised to see them raise it to recover some valuables and keep it out of the hands of looters. (though if the rumors are true, its sitting too deep to be dived upon.

I figure she kept moving a bit after she hit the rock. There is a 23 minute delay between impact and when the call to abandon ship was made.

well like the news said, if she hit the rock or a reef and kept sailing into deeper water, that might explain it

I sure hope that one lady we talked to on the Queen of the North positioning cruise last Oct who was ferry employee wasent onboard with her dog in the car. When we took the positioning cruise she had her dog with her that time on the car deck. That wouldent be good if there were animals onboard in cars that went down with the ship.

I travelled to/from SaltSpring today (on the safe Howe Sound Queen). I had approx 4 hours of car-time to listen to CKNW & CBC radio, and I'm still not used to the headline "Queen of the North Sinking".
Too surreal.
I've been very somber / distraught today. As this community will appreciate, I really loved that ship.....she was my favourite. Such a beautiful ship......the recent pictures by Kevin Stapleton at Seymour Narrows will be a treasure to me. Such beautiful lines on that ship.

Yes Ultra I know what you mean. She was a beautiful ship and I really enjoyed the Positioning Cruise last Oct and hoped I would get on her this summer up to Prince Rupert. I really cant believe she is sitting at the bottom of the ocean. It has been a very sad/somber day for me too along with everyone else on her and the ferry employees and passengers who were on her.

O GOD our heavenly Father, who art present in thy power in every place: Preserve, we beseech thee, all who travel by sea or land or air; especially those who sail in this ship; surround them with thy loving care; protect them from every danger; and bring them in safety to their journey's end; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O ETERNAL Lord God, who alone spreadest out the heavens, and rulest the raging of the sea; who hast compassed the waters with bounds, until day and night come to an end; Be pleased to receive into thy Almighty and most gracious protection, the persons of us thy servants, and the Fleet [or Ship] in which we serve. Preserve us from the dangers of the sea, and from the violence of the enemy; that we may be a safeguard unto the land, and a security for such as pass on the seas upon their lawful occasions; that the inhabitants of our land may in peace and quietness serve thee our God; and that we may return in safety to enjoy the blessings of the land, with the fruits of our labour; and, with a thankful remembrance of thy mercies, to praise and glorify thy holy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The silver lining to this cloud is that if they leave her there, the majestic Queen of the North will remain in BC as long as nature wishes. In 2009 she would have been cut up for scrap, or sold to suffer the fate of the Victoria, broken up in God-knows-where, India.

BC Ferries should of flown their flags at half mast to mourn the loss of the one of their ships. Although everyone surived who was on the North losing one of their unexpectedly would be a reason to fly them at half mast. Seeing she was flagship of the fleet.

I have to agree with you all.. what a disappointing day. As far as passenger experience goes, the Queen of the North was probably the best ferry they had... the best one they ever had. I was hoping to go on her at least one more time before she had to be retired. She was THE Queen of the fleet.
What an awful day for the north coast too. Right now all they have is the Nimpkish!! If they can't get a replacement before the summer (and I'm sure it won't be as good as the Queen of the North even if they do) there are going to be huge tourism losses for the area.
