I heard the first Ultra Voyager is suposed to be 15% bigger than the Voyager of the seas class and will be 18 stories high with 22 knots of speed holding 3600 passengers and a name thats not official yet called the Spirit of the Seas.It sure is weird saying an 18 story ship that makes a S-Class BC ferry look like a toy boat in a bathtub ;D

You'll forgive me for saying so, but I find that slightly disturbing, actually. The excess of the cruise ship industry boggles my mind. They're not boats, they're floating hotels.
I guess the days of ships being called "she", and decks being called 'decks' are no more...

Wow, she gonna be one big ship. I thought the Diamond Princess and that class of ship was big. How big is the Queen Mary 2??

I agree, Fenklebaum. Cruise ships are pointless. The world could do without them. In my opinion, the only reason these cruise companies build these ships so large is to stay ahead of the competition, not the demand. Not that I hate cruise ships, but they are a wee bit on the large side.

we should convert some of them to RO-RO ships and put them on the BC Ferries Fleet

If you got to go on the bridge you'd disagree, personally i'd love to be a captain, Thay are still ships, big and elegant. Please don't put down cruise ships royal caribbean's ships are some of the most technologicaly advanced in the fields of propulsion, navigation, etc. yes it may be a hotel but its still a ship. Take the serenade of the seas for example, she runs on a gas turbine jet engine to power her two azipods (z-drive), she's 90 000 tons and has 103 000 hp packing and 2000 in each bow truster. she is one of the most enviromentaly friendly ships in the world with 90% les stack emissions, so before you dought a cruise ship think again and research how nautical they still are. Royal Caribbean home page go to the fleet section and take a look.

Sir, you are absolutely correct, I should verify my facts before judging. And I apologize for thereby ruffling you. However, my opinion on the matter of cruise ships remains unchanged.
They may be environmentally friendly, they may be powerful, they may be technologically superior to the vast majority of ships on the water. This I will grant you unequivocally.
But when it comes time to judge whether or not a ship is truly a ship... The diminutive and clunky old "Lady Rose" will win the contest any day.
I simply have yet to find grace and charm comparable to that of the Lady Rose's, the Queen of Tsawassen's or the venerable former Langdale Queen in a cruise ship.
This is simply my opinion

Thank you I think it's the size that makes them more of a ship.

To answer your question, Karl, the Queen Mary II is 345 m long, weighs almost 150, 000 tonnes and sails at a whopping 29 knots.

THe QM2 is a nice ship though i thought the back of it is poorly designed. I like royal caribbeans signiture viking crown around the funnel.

Cruise Ships are pointless you say, hmm. Not sure about that one. I mean no one has to take a cruise, it's not like their ferries that have to get people where there going. Cruise Ships are more like floating communties, floating hotels, when you see them from the outside they look like big huge ships. From the inside they probably, and I say probably because I have never actually been on a cruise ship before, I would assume if you were inside a cruise ship you wouldent even know you were on one. People take cruises for pleasure, vacations, holidays. People wouldent take a cruise ship to go from one place to another, even with the one way positioning cruises at the begining and end of the season. Maybe, a few but not alot. I have seen many cruise ships in Victoria this summer from small ones, the smallest, the Silver Shadow at 597' which is a bit larger than the Spirit Class ferries to the biggest ship the Norwegian Star at 971' Now those smaller cruise ships would maybe seem more like a ship, especially the Silver Shadow, which if you put that one and the SOVI next to each other, the SS would be a bit larger not by much, 50' or so. That's my opinion, I just happen to be a cruise ship fan so I would be all positive about them

Some of those Cruise Ships are real beauties though! I see them all the time here in Victoria during the summer. Amazing ships seeing three all here at one time, you can get so close to them too, at some point your standing there and your right under the bow, it's amazing. Much neater in the evenings too as they are all lit up. Awesome. We are getting to the end of the season now. Only two more left.

Yesterday in vancouver harbour there were six, Veendam, Statendam, Oosterdam, Infinity, Norwiegian Sun and my favourite the beautiful Serenade of the Seas. the Serenade of the Seas will not be back until June. Most parts of the inside you still know your on a ship but in places like the theatre or the casino(didn't go in) are more like a vegas style place. But still they are so cool, I'll bet money that anyone who goes on a cruise ship (especially royal caribbean) thay will have the time of their lives so. -Get out there

That would be neat if she docked at Roberts Bank?? Would she dock or would she anchor off there?? Are you talking about the Coal Pile next to Tsawwassen???

Post by HNS on Nov 22, 2004 18:58:37 GMT -8
I would think they would "anchor-out" in English Bay way before they would do so off Roberts Bank. Berthing there, maybe, but why anchor out there?

This is just a rumor, remember, but it would dock near the coal pile because tendering a ship when it's loading all it's people for the first time would be a catastrophe.
