The Quinault has had some steering problems so the Port Townsend-Keystone route has been down to one boat for the last two days. This created some major sailing waits. They have decided to pull the Illahee from the San Juan Inter-Island run to bring back the two boat schedule. There is no word on what boat will be doing the San Juan Inter-Island route this week, maybe the Chelan is back from refit? Or are they going to take the Evergreen State out of mothballs like when the Sealth hit the reef earlier in the year? Or just not have the route until the Quinault is fixed.

Just checked the WSF vessel GPS system on their website, the Evergreen State is tied up at Friday Harbor so she must be doing the inter-island run this week.

Just checked WSF service bulletins... the Evergreen State is handling the inter-island route. Last night I saw a boat that appeared to be doing sea trials. Might've been the Chelan (was too far away to get a good look). Could've also been the Yakima. -- LB

The Walla Walla and the Yakima have been out the last two or three months, I would assume getting their elevators installed before the summer season. The Chelan should be back anytime after her full refit. She will share the Sidney route with the Elwha this summer. The Walla Walla will go to the Bremerton run, which puts the Kaleetan back in the San Juans. The Yakima will replace the Hyak in the San Juans and the Hyak will be the extra/relief boat for the Summer.

Ferry Quinault out of service after hitting rock shelf seattlepi.nwsource.com/transportation/226732_tl102.htmlSupposedly the Coast Guard didn't like to see the Illahee on the Pt. Townsend rt. due to a not exactly great reliability record (according to another ferry discussion board I go to frequently). Back in 1987, after the (now retired) Olympic broke down while on that route, the Coast Guard told WSF to never use the Olympic and Rhododendron (which was in mothballs at the time) on that route again. -- LB

So you mean the Chelan is going to be on the Sidney run along with the Elwha this summer?? What is the purpose?? They dont usually have two boats on that run.

I suspect the Chelan may be taking over for the Sealth (which is scheduled to get a new interior) for the summer schedule, then may replace the Elwha afterwards.

why are they replacing the Elwha? She got renovations and she is good for a few years to come I know the Yakima is getting an elevator installed and doing a mini overhaul.

They do two round trips to Sidney in the summer instead of the one. The Elwha does one, the Chelan does another. Also, giving the Chelan the SOLAS upgrades gives them another boat to do the Sidney run when the Elwha is out for maintenance, or breaks down. The only other SOLAS boat is the Evergreen State, and she is only used in emergency's (like now when the Quinault hit a rock shelf). EDIT: Looking at the upcoming schedule on the WSF website, one boat could do both round trips. I don't know if they will use the Elwha or the Chelan. The Elwha holds about 145 cars, the Chelan 124. WSF uses five boats in the San Juans in the summer, three Supers, one Issaquah, and the Illahee for the inter-island. The Sealth is an extra boat, but I think they will wait until the winter to get the Sealth's upgrades done. The Walla Walla is still in for her mid-life upgrade, and they won't have an extra boat for emergency's this summer until the Walla Walla is done.

Well the Elwha usually is only out of service in the winter and the last few times she has been they never had a replacement and they just cancelled the service for a few months. I dont know if they would use the Chelan as the one boat on the Sidney run in the summer cause if she is smaller there could be overloads. I would love to see the Chelan in Sidney though, that would be neat to see a different ship other than the Elwha and the Evergreen State. Maybe they could use one ship for the morning sailing non stop in the summer and another ship for the 6pm departure which stops at Friday Harbour. Personally I think the non stop Sidney to Anacortes sailing should be the 6pm sailing during the summer and the 11:20am should stop at Friday Harbour. That would give people from Vancouver Island the chance to go to Friday Harbour spend the afternoon on the island then head on over to Anacortes without having to stay over if you take the 6pm like it is now. It's like that in the off season so why not keep it that way and make the evening trip non stop.

they took out the Sidney route in Winter because of money and ridership.

The SOLAS certificate on the Evergreen State expired either last year or the year before. Probably hasn't been renewed.

Since they never use the Evergreen State anymore I wouldn't doubt it. She is probably the first to go when the new class arrives, followed by the Steel Electrics once the new Keystone Harbor is done.

I was looking at something on the WSDOT website and it said the Evergreen State is going to be retired next year. The same document doesn't say anything about the Rhododendron or Hyak being retired. I'll see if I can find the link to the document. -- LB
