Hey Queen of the North: If only it were up to a company to decide whether to charge GST or not !!!! Sadly, the Federal Gov't has far reaching powers, and the Government dictates to businesses on how/when/how-much to charge for GST. And companies like Harbourlynx take on the risk of having to make sure that they charge the GST correctly (or at all).....because if Harbourlynx screws up by not charging GST when it's supposed to, then Harbourlynx gets fined & maybe charged by the Federal Gov't. Businesses (especially small businesses) are sometimes helpless pawns that are used to collect the government's taxes......whether they like it or not, and whether the customers like it or not. So the real question is: "Why did the federal government decide to make Harbourlynx start charging the GST on Jan.1st?". Answer: Excise Tax Act was enabled on Jan.1st 1991 which brought in the Federal Goods & Services Tax. Some services are deemed taxable, others exempt, still others as zero-rated. Small business threshhold set at $30,000 annual taxable supplies, afterwhich a business shall register, if their taxable supplies in the four preceding quarters was over $30,000. Business shall default to quarterly filing, unless they can elect annual filing with quarterly instalments......... (Hey, did I just fly off on a tangent ??) Long story short: if you hate paying the GST, your fight is with the Federal Gov't, not with a local business that is forced to collect the tax. wow, I must be bored today.....

Yeah they should abolish the GST and then we can loose all sorts of transit, healthcare and other government services. That would be awesome! Then BCF could charge $26 for a walk on passenger, too..

BCF does not pay GSt or PST because of the fact that the provincial government is thier main stockholder.

I rode Harbourlynx, for the first time ever for me, on Tuesday.....and I rode it back home tonight.
I never rode the Pacificats, so this was my first time on any fast-ferry catermaran.
It seemed to be very much like an air plane, with the seats. When we were leaving Nanaimo harbour, near Gallows Point, and the ferry started to rev up & get faster, it felt just like I was on a Baxter seaplane, when the DeHavilland Beaver revs up.
A very nice ride, indeed. I'll do it again.

I sat down below. I sat near the coffee counter on the way over, and then in the bottom front section on the way back.
I presumed that the upstairs was off-limits to standard fare passenger. Is it a "business class" type of restriction, or is upstairs open to everybody?
I smiled at the attendants doing the life jacket demonstration......they must be used to doing an acting job that hardly anyone watches (must be like the news reporters on "The New VI").
Coming back from Vancouver, I never really felt that "rev it up" feeling.....I don't know if they went full speed right away? From Nanaimo, I could really tell when they revved it up at Gallows Point.

as of right now the ship is open to everybody. all passenger spaces are open, but in the future that is/was supposed to become a bar, where the older people could go upstairs and have a drink. the speeding up part @ Vancouver doesn't happen till either just past the cruise ship terminal (theres a bouy they pass then they speed up) or past the First narrows bridge. Depending on conditions.
