yeah, its been in and out of the news, which is one of the reasons that my dad decided to move to Harbourlynx. BC Ferries will probably end up buying them. so that they can have replacements for the Klitsa, and the kahloke

Yes, the Albion Ferries are finished for in four years, supposedly when the new bridge is coming...I think it's going to be on 200th street? Seen it in the newspaper. Who knows what will happen to them, maybe get scrapped? Probably not, but BC Ferries won't buy them as they're getting old.

yeah...right....they are 100X better than the kiltsa, because they have been kept in freshwater, and in better shape. these ships were ment to have a 60 - 75 year shelf life, that would put them all the way to 2050

The two boats are large and powerful by river-ferry standards. They're also very well-maintained, and equipped for all year, fresh water service.
If I had my 'druthers, we'd keep one running after the bridge is completed. There's one conflict now: the Stolo people (who own Macmillan Island, the Ft Langley terminal) say they want their land returned, without the ferry's interference.
I agree. We arbitrarily took a right-of-way across their land 90 years ago for the ferry.
Here's my suggestion: Give the Stolo people one of the boats, plus a lease on the the Albion dock. In return, let the Stolo charge a toll that they can use to to provide for operations and maintenance.
If they can manage it well, we will all benefit. If they fail, we'll lose a service that we have already written off .. but I don't think they will fail.
Enterprising Stolo people were ferrying newcomers across the Fraser River from the 1840's to the 1870's. Let's try this.

i got a better idea, move the ferries upriver about 5 KM's to 280th street, the location would match up perfect with the freeway, no Natives, and its less foggy, and the trip would be shorter, with direct access to the lougheed highway

Aww, geez!
Let's just pave the Fraser River.
Fuggaboutit. We can drop a concrete slab at Moran Canyon (9 miles above Lilloett) and that pesky, 800-mile river won't bother us anymore.
Oh yeah, no d**n native folks netting, gaffing and trapping salmon as they have done for .. umm .. 2,000 years? Or is it 10,000?
Sorry to get so wound up on this topic, pal .. but I am really sincere. IF the Indian people can run the Albion ferry and make it pay .. good for them.
If they can't, then goodbye ferry.
What I am not sorry about is being cheesed off -severely- by the suggestion that moving the ferry to non-Indian land is in any way a solution.
The ferry has been running between MacMillan Island and Albion for 100 years. Why?
It's almost the narrowest point on the big river between New Westminster and Hope. Just upstream, the river skirts Crescent Island on the Matsqui side, and pounds hard on the Mission bluffs.
Fort Langley-Albion is the ideal water-level crossing. F*ck the Indians, then. Give them no patronage, should they decide to run a ferry.
At this point, they are blockheads.
The MacMillan Island Stolo are stuck on one idea: "Give us back our land!"
Well, be enterprising, you guys.

it may be a little wider up at around 280th, but the river is smoother and less rough, and, the fog always seems to be lighter there. but i would never like to see the indians running a ferry, especially "My" ferries, those boats have been a part of my life so long, id hate for people who think they deserve them to start running them. that would drive me nuts. cause they would not take care of them, and probably end up shoving them up on a bank somewhere where they would be left to rott for the rest of thier existance.

they are already spending money on the bridge. i doubt they will spend money just to move a ferry that will become obsolete in the next few years

obselete? they are top of the line ships. the Osprey 2000, and the Skeena queen are modeled after these ships. they use technology, that is still being experimented with today. They just need a small renovation to make them last for 100 years. a small slice and dice, which would take them from 25 capac. to up to 180capacity. which is huge for an open deck ship. check that!

not that the ferries will be obsolete but the route across and the need for a route across the fraser in that area will be obsolete.
have you ever been a vehicle passenger on the skeena queen. it is not a very tourist friendly ferry. hard seats in the lounges, and you can not see out of your car off the ferry unless they have you at the front of the ferry

I was wrong to promote the Stolo people as the best operators of the Fraser River ferry. In fact, they have no interest in running the service now.
Their sole interest seems to be to reclaim all of MacMillan Island as living space. And then: live in poverty?
I think they are missing a great opportunity. They exasperate me; they leave me with less reason to support them.
With a nod to HL Kid, I don't think the Indians would leave the boats beached and rusting ... if they had the enterprising spirit to run them.
I apologize for imflammatory remarks earlier. Fraser River native people are accomplished rivermen; they run towboats, boomboats and fishing boats on the Fraser River.
But, if they have no interest in operating the Albion-Ft Langley ferry, I guess it will cease.

There was plans floating around when BC ferries was going to privitize some of its routes, and a company was going to build a ship similar to the osprey 2000, but they took into account the fact that people like to be able to see the water, as its very romantic, and be able to watch stuff as they go by. and the FT. langley Municipal office stated. that if the ferry is going to go, then they will dismantle the bridge to MacMillian island, and move it to a place where it is needed. and that would mean that the natives of Macmillian island would lose thier Car access to the island.

TOOBAGOOBA,
You are a swine. You are a veritable swine. It's quite sad that someone must resort to posting under assumed names simply to get their jollies.
So you have a problem with homosexuals now, do you? Well I have news for you. It has been said that those who hate others only hate because they see in others what they see in themselves.
Now, I realize that you've the intellectual capacity of an intoxicated lemur, so I'll spell it out plain and simple for you. And Moderators, if you feel that what I am about to write to Toobagoba is inappropriate, then reprimand me. Quite frankly I've had enough.
TOOBAGOOBA: good grief THE SMEG OFF!!!!!
