Are there any routes in Europe that are similar to the Vancouver Island runs? By similar routes I mean high capacity runs 1-2 hours in length with large capacity car ferries? Or do all the large ferries over there do the longer 5-6 hour runs?

the irish ferry is a 4 - 5 hour run i think. with a lynx. modified, with SAL (not offical Acronym) (SAL = Sea Air Levitation) which puts a bubble of air like a hovercraft between the 2 hulls, and it provides more speed, and a smoother ride. and drop the time to about 3 - 4 hours.

yeah. what im saying is that the route could be shorter with a SAL Catamaran. which is what Hlynx was looking at doing. not anymore though

they do have the catamarans like the Jonathan Swift running Holyhead to Dublin because there is more open water and it makes the trip in two hours.

I was wondering if there are any in terms of vessel car capacity, route length and traffic.
I have another question while I'm at it: Did the Chunnel seriously affect cross-channel ferries? And what are the time and cost comparisons between the Chunnel and a typical ferry?

I'm wondering if comparison can be made between BC routes and European routes. In Europe you have millions and millions of people, huge economies, efficient high-volume transportation networks, all separated by various distances of water. In BC we have less than one million people on Vancouver Island... the next largest population is on Saltspring which has less than 10,000. We have public transportation in the form of buses and skytrain (with only a couple stations anywhere near the water) No doubt population will increase in the coming years, but still, in 50 years the islands will be nothing compared to the UK or Norway or Sweden. So how much room is there for European-type competition in BC? I'm not saying there isn't, but I'd just like to get another perspective since I can't quite understand comparing the two places at the moment.

Good points. I wasn't aware of those numbers. Thanks for the information.
